Oh ya, now you post this. After I have already bought my second set of shorties.

BTW, nice find, looks very interesting. :thumbs_u:
What? Didn't like the color of the first set...

Stell - it's a little pricey for not really offering any performance gain.

It says WITHOUT MDS though... Kind of confusing, do they mean it will only work in cars without MDS, or you can convert any setup to the MDS set up... err. I am confused.

The 'dead' cylinders still spark in MDS mode eh???
Huh???

A 2005 to 2006 conversion was posted a long time ago. And you don't have to cut any coil pack wires. You buy the connectors, and slide the existing wires into the new connector for the 2006 coils. It does nothing except convert to the 2006's better cosmetics and has no effect on MDS.

Ridiculous to do for $550, but if you happen upon a 2006 wreck.........

I did it on my 04 HEMI Ram (non-MDS) and it worked great. I also bought it from the same guy that has it on Ebay. His name is Art, he works for Henson Motors here in Texas. They are a Dodge dealership that has a speed shop in their parts department. They sell EVERYTHING you could imagine and his prices are awesome. You can reach him by phone at 1-800-530-5337.

I'm curious how much pricing out the parts would cost. I'd also get the 6.1 covers from the SRTs if you were going to do that. They're a bit nicer looking than those. And since I've seen an engine on eBay (6.1) that had one original cover and one of those, I assume the SRT's would fit just the same.

Oh, I've seen just the covers online for $50-60, so are eight coils and the rest of the hardware going to cost over $400?

Look, before you leap and you could do it cheaper with better looking covers.

Looking online and not including the bolts/washers/nuts here's what I see.

Oh by the way, the service manual says the gaskets are reusable as long as they're not damaged. So if you really wanted to be a cheap SOB... You could skip on those too. However there is a ground mounting point on the 5.7 if I recall, so that would have to be accomodated somehow. Might have been needed due to the wires dancing from side to side. The 6.1 doesn't have it.

Description ----- Qty - MSRP Price - Your Price - Total Cost
VALVE COVER 6.1L - 2 -- $56.25 ----- $42.19 ----- $84.38
COVER GASKET ----- 2 -- $20.85 ----- $15.64 ----- $31.28
TUBE GASKET ------ 8 -- $5.85 ------ $4.39 ------ $35.12
IGNITION COIL ---- 8 -- $30.70 ----- $23.03 ----- $184.24

Total:$335.02

What about the connectors to the coils? I believe they are different.

The coil connectors are different. I talked to Art and he looked up the parts again today and the valve covers are off restriction so they are a lot cheaper now. He said even $42.19 is more than the mopar list of $40.35! (The part number has changes as well.)

I can now sell the kit with valve covers, coil packs, and coil pack connectors for $299!

The valve covers come with new gaskets about 50% of the time. Even if they don't the gaskets are large rubber O-rings. I always reuse the VC gaskets and I have never had one leak! If you want new gaskets and the VC's don't come with them, I can get them cheap as well.

Excellent work Scott...so the kit you are proposing has the 6.1 valve covers?? Are they different than the 5.7 VC that can hold the dual plug coilpack?

What about the connectors in your new kit...will they have to be soldered on or just plug ins?

2nd to last Q: do you know if the coils emit the same power spark or are these dual coils more powerful?

Last Q: What about the grounding strap referred to by Jaak earlier...is it there and how would that be accomodated...

thanks
Stell

The strap is on the VC stud/bolt and I just left it on there and popped it in the new VC.

I have the metal 6.1 VC's that are coated with a wrinkle finnish (no longer available) and I haven't had any problems. The new 6.1 VC's are composite (plastic), so you may need to run a wire from the strap to ground? If so I would move the strap from the center of the VC to the rear and run a small loop the the bolt that attaches the ground at the back of the head.

Edit: I just remembered that ALL replacement valve covers for the 5.7 and 6.1 are going to be composite and there are no kits or instructions for relocating that strap so I wouldn't worry about it. I have also run my truck without the straps connected will no ill effects.

Do the 2006 coils have a different bolt pattern than the 2005? Why do you have to change the covers? I checked the parts, the 2006 5.7 covers are DOUBLE the price of the 6.1. What about the posts that mount the engine cover? Can you use the engine cover with the 6.1 vcovers?

yes diff bolt pattern because the twin plug coil(sits a top of both the plugs) is double the size of the single. 05 coil only sits on one plug
