MDS after Battery disconnect

I disconnected my battery while installing the Basslink. When I hooked it back up I ran through the latest procedure for reconnect. Took it for a drive and no MDS. I'll have to dig up the MDS reset procedure from the early TSB and give it a try.

Running through the MDS reset procedure cleared it right up. I probably would not have noticed it until the first fill up, except for my MDS monitor light.

Did you have the StarScan to reset codes or just skipped the last step?

No codes to reset.

Maybe I'm using the wrong term. Did you do Step 7? Or just skip it?

1. You need a fairly long, open, safe, straight road for a WOT run to about 35 mph.
2. Get engine up to operating temp., engine running and car stopped put selector in "D", move it to the right until in "1".
3. Turn off all electrical accessories (except lights if needed).
4. WOT run to 4500 RPM (about 35 mph), immediately remove foot from accelerator and do not depress the brake, let the vehicle coast with the throttle closed until the vehicle speed is again at 35 mph or lower.
5. Stop vehicle and place in "Park", verify all instrument cluster warning indicators are off.
6. Cycle ignition switch "Off" and back "On", but do not immediately start engine.
7. Hook up StarScan and clear DTC's
8. MDS calibration is now complete.

I skipped it. No Starscan

Wide Open Throttle.

Put the pedal to the metal :)

I am sure it would learn eventually. I put about 50 miles on my car of normal driving and it had not. It took me 2 minutes and it was done.

FNKYCHKN strikes again! Thanks Man! I was literally thinking of doing the MDS reset last night because I figured a battery disconnect was done when my radio got replaced last week and there is a road at my complex at work that would be an easy place to do it. Well I never got around to it.

So as I'm coming home from work at 1 AM I did something I have not done before. I usually just reset my EVIC whenever I fill up the tank and get my normal average for the tankful (between 18 and 19 mpg) and that's that. But today as soon as I got on the highway I reset the EVIC for my MPG readout and set the cruise on 65mph. No traffic so never had to touch it for 22 miles. The darn thing jumped up from the 16.4 it was reading, (lots of local driving first quarter of this tankful), to 48.7 MPG!!! Well of course it didn't stay there long but it worked it's way down to 27.1 MPG and STAYED THERE for the last 10 miles of the trip (I've got 05 Mag RT by the way).

When I got off the highway and drove the last 5 miles home I had to do 35mph and stop and go stuff at lights and stop signs. When I pulled in the driveway it had already dropped to 24.3 and was still on the way down. I'm no longer concerned that my MDS is some kind of mythical beast. The devil is in my right foot. If you like pushing your car hard you WILL pay for it in gas. If you can get on a long level stretch of highway it will sip gas for a big car. The system works IMHO. Your mileage may vary.

talked to a chrysler tech trainer today. he said this procedure was eliminated from the TSB because it was not necessary. he said the PCM will relearn by itself just from normal driving.
Fnkychkn, You have given me lots of great advice since I joined this forum. Thanks.

I think DC made a mistake in removing that procedure from the TSB. It changed my mileage big time.

I put in my CAI about 3 months ago, gas mileage has been down ever since the battery reconnect. Probably put 5-6K miles on since the CAI install. Been lucky to get 19MPG on the highway or 17MPG around town.

Just for S&G, yesterday I tried the MDS recalibration procedure after averaging 19MPG on a flat highway with the cruise on @ 76MPH over a 2 hour trip.

On the way home, my around town MPG was 19.9MPG and got anywhere from 21.1-24.0 (flipping AC on an off makes a huge difference here in FL) on the highway.

I can actually feel the MDS running more than it has been. I'm very sensitive to the sound and feel of the Tranny and can honestly tell a HUGE difference from the MDS recalibration.

Just my 2 cents anyways man.
