How to Display Diagnostic Trouble Codes

Get in the car, close the door. Perform the following steps fairly quickly (less than 3 seconds) :

Turn key to ON
then back to ACC
then to ON
then back to ACC
then to ON

If there are any stored codes, they will appear immediately, in place of the odometer. For instance an "INTAKE AIR TEMPERATURE SENSOR CIRCUIT HIGH" error will set a code of P0113.

Once the codes have been displayed, you'll see "-----". If there are no trouble codes, the dashes will be the first item displayed.

After a few seconds, the display changes to "-dOnE-".

This is the same procedure used on most, if not all, late model DCX vehicles.

Others have had the same problem, it's all in the speed at which you cycle the key in the ignition (even 3 seconds may be too much).

Gotta do it pretty quickly. Hopefully this will help.

Hi. Did you go all the way back to ACC each time? I have tried all ways and can't get it to work. I read somewher all you had to do was go to ON then slightly back until the LED's are off and back to On and repeat it stopping at ON. I am going to try again a lot faster both ways. I don't have the EVIC as in the example and am happy to report it works for my car as well.

 

I tried the Fuse 17 option and now I'm getting 0120 and 1120 codes. My question is the letter in front of the code. My car shows a "U" instead of the "P", what is the difference?

Also wanted to know if there is a way to clear the codes, I have read that the OBD II tools won't work (although I probably should try to use mine).

Try pulling fuse 11 for 30 seconds or so.

Anatomy of the DTC

A DTC is made up of 5 digits. The figure below demonstrates the composition of a DTC. With this information it is easier to trouble shoot a DTC without knowing the description of the code.

The "complete code list" only covers OBDII codes, not manufacturer specific codes. P1000 and higher are manufacturer specific, and so are the ones that start with other letters.

 

Over in ChargerForum, we've come across this site which has some codes not found in the above OBDII look-ups, which have helped us a time or three:

I had my check engine light come on. I did the ignition check as stated in this log. I want to thank you guys. I did as you wrote and the check engine light has since gone out. So My many thanks to you.

not trying bring back an old post but this on,off,on,off,on procedure works on all chrysler products from early 80's to date.only diff is cars without display panels,the check engine light will flash.say the code is 55 which is the end code the check engine lght will flash 5 times puase flash 5 times.these code numbers are not OBDII but can be found the the repair manules such as chilton ect...hope this helps.

if MIL flashes after key on it means that not all OBD2 monitors have run since last reset and you'll have to wait till they all run and pass before passing an emission test.
