Here is the situation. Your on a 4 lane divided highway. Two lanes going in each direction. There is a police car and they have the cruise control set at excatly the speed limit. Which of the following are you.

(A) my cruise is set at exactly the speed limit or slightly under so I wouldnt get with a mile of this guy.

(B) I would see this guy off in the distance and approach until I got close and then get in line with the other 6 cars following behind him.

(C) I would set my cruise to slightly above the speed limit and slowly cruise past and then when he was out of sight resume normal speed.

(D) I wouldnt even see him until I was almost even with his bumper at which point I would slam on the brakes and make sure I didnt dare past him, slowing down to pull in behind him.

Im always (c) and its funnny as hell to watch all the cars that are lined up behind him pull out to pass as soon as I do. Yet another reason I dont want illegal window tint on my car :)

Passing a cop on the highway...that's a joke right?
Probably no quicker way to get knocked off (that's the inside lingo for getting pulled over). The only way to be more disrespectful is to flip them off as you go buy. Is it uncool that they do that sometimes, yeah, but there's plenty-o-b!tching when they drive above the speed limit...Catch 22, damned if you do, damned if you don't. Goes along with the occupational hazard of maybe getting killed in the line of duty...yeah, cops got it made.

If you're that anxious to speed, wait until they pull off the next exit ramp, and if they don't, just go with the flow and avoid a potential ticket...so you won't have to come and post here about how some lousy cop with nothing else better to do wrote you a ticket.

So glad I'm retired...

You forgot: E) Drop it to 3rd gear and blow past them at WOT, engine screaming like a banshee!! :Na_Na_Na_Na:

Seriously, though... I've seen OSP screw up the traffic for MILES on the interstate, by riding along next to a tractor-trailer. Don't forget, here in Ohio, the trucks have to go 55mph, while the cars are supposed to go 65mph. They do it just for giggles.

I also lived in Arizona for a couple of years. Many, many times I would see a State Trooper in the right-hand lane of a 6-lane highway, speed limit 65 and he's going 55, AND NO ONE ACROSS ALL 6 LANES WOULD PASS!!! :panic: :banghead:
There were a couple of times I worked my way up to the front, set the cruise to 65 and wave at the officer on the way by. They'd usually wave back, laughing!

Hence the term "road-rage"....

If your cruise is set to the speed limit or there abouts +/-1 Mph or Kph, and your not cruising at the same rate as he/she is, you think they may be going just a little slower, then pass em, they may be trolling and they may not be, but that's the chance you take.
I don't have a problem about passing them, but I'm not gonna blow the lettering off their unit and doin 5 or so above, that's a crap shoot always, just depends on what their doing.
I don't speed around town, and if I am speeding it's out on the open road and I'm not talking 20 or 30 over I like my insurance rates, and 0 points against my DL......JMO

and besides the LEO is JUST doin his job

I got pulled over for doing choice C.

She was cool, though. Essentially told me, "If I'm on the highway, just cruising... don't pass me."

If the cruiser is doing 10-under, though, I would have no qualms passing them at the speed limit (assuming it's not hailing or there are some other circumstances).

When I had my S55 AMG I "accidently" raced an unmarked state trooper...

Being the LX enthusiast I am I spied what looked like a debadged R/T Charger with tinted windows and dual exhaust pass by me as I was attempting to pull out from a side street. As soon as I did I let all 500 HP out and flew by him as he was cruising along at least 10 MPH over the speed limit. I was looking forward to a side by side line up at the upcoming light, but then I noticed the blue and red strobes in my rear view mirror as soon as I pulled in front of him...
When he came up on my vehicle I had both of my side windows down and my hands out of the car and identified myself. He thought I was rolling undercover because of the ride and was kind of shocked when I told him it was mine (my wife's actually, but I stole the keys from her every chance I got). He was an AMG enthusiast himself and we ended up talking for a while about them and the Charger. He thought that I knew for sure he was an unmarked unit (I just spaced it in my interest in all things LX) and was racing him anyway. I told him there was no way I'd do that to which he responded he was constantly amazed at how many people know he's a unmarked and try to race him anyway. When I asked him what he does about that after he pulls them over he stated that sometimes they get a ticket, sometimes they don't...

I try not to push my luck so I don't have to put an officer in that position...I know the feeling!

Cops are people too...some of them are real naughty parts of the human anatomy, some are actually decent carbon based life forms, but it's always good advice not to try and test their authority, some take that real personal...

I always go with choice C, never got pulled over though (knock on wood) I really don't see the point of being pulled over if you only going 4 or 5 miles over. I just can't stand it when driver see a police cruiser and all of a sudden start going 10 miles under the speed limit, that ch*t irritates the hell out of me.

I usually have my cruise set at about 8 over depending on weather/road conditions, and haven't had a problem. Black and white fever is just dangerous on the freeway. Don't drive like a tool and you'll be ok.

I have a ton of officers in my family and as friends. Most, and most of the time, aren't looking to bust someone doing 3-7mph over the speed limit.

Sooooo - cruising past an officer on the Highway at a fair rate of speed, etc...is okay, unless you start making stupid maneuvers. In PA it is illegal to ride in the left lane for 2 miles without passing - which i love by the way. I know we've even had people driving slow in the left pulled over after someone passed them in the right lane....just to warn the person.

Key is - drive safe, even if you are a few MPH over the limit. 15 over the limit...well, yeah...plan on getting your insurance, registration and license out.

I don't see how it is disrespectful to pass a cop that is doing EXACTLY the speed limit, or somewhat less.

I wouldn't go flying by or doing any radical lane changes, but I would certainly pass them, even if I was doing a few km/hr over the limit.

FWIW- If I'm patrolling the interstate in the left lane, I'll be doing near the limit. If traffic backs up, I'll slide to the shoulder, let the pack pass, then get back to work.

The last thing I want is a 20 car pile-up behind me when I decide to make a u-turn through the median.

If I'm dong the limit, passing me will get you stopped, 9 out of 10. Like Ronin said, speeding when you don't know an officer is there is one thing...

We do have written policy that allows us to drive the speed limit on the highway, with a patrol car in each lane, to slow down traffic in areas where most of the cars are speeding. It's like a rolling roadblock. I don't know that it's ever been done here.

Good luck with that...speeding is speeding and if you don't think you're gonna get written up for passing a couple for just a few km/hr over the limit, then have at it.

Don't pull the tiger's tail, don't stick your thumb in someone's eye, etc., etc., etc. Just like Green_Manalishi, I'm trying to give advice to keep y'all out of trouble; if'n you want to learn the hard way then good for you, just don't post that a cop busted your chops for a 'lil speeding, they might be trying to make a quota (which of course, doesn't officially exist) and you're gonna pull a short straw.

It would depend on how far it was to my exit. If I'm getting off in a mile or two, no sense to it (cop or not). Also depends on traffic, time of day and how much of a rush I'm in. They may be busy talking on the radio or whatever. Haven't come across that situation yet. I would probably follow for awhile and see what he does before I'd pass.

I'm a "C" guy and you would think I would learn at some point to stop. I've been pulled over twice for it. Once was a ticket (OK, I didn't leisurely pass him, I blew by a marked trooper going 15mph over - I didn't see him at all) and the other time the cop ram my plates and long of the short of it, my wife had to drive home, while I had to make some phone calls when I got home - no ticket in the long run though.

My dad was a smart ass once with a cop and we got pulled over, we were passing the cop and the cop looked over at my dad and pointed at his speedo and flashes 5 - 5 with his hand.

Good ole pops, looks down and does the same thing as we are passing him.

Somehow, he didn't get a ticket.

I've passed cops on the highway like this, so far no problems... If they're over the limit even a little, no way I'm passing.

I have a friend that was a cop in Atlanta for awhile. He wasn't a traffic patrolman, so sometimes when his duties were slow, it wasn't a high traffic time, and he was in a marked car, he'd go onto one of the big highways at a few over the limit, and then slowly back off to see how many cars he could get stacked up behind him, or slowly reduce his speed to see how slow he could get the trailing cars to go before someone had enough and passed him anyway. He'd go a few miles and then take an exit.

I am a "C" guy. But the part of that in Montana is if you get pulled over doing less than 10MPH over the speed limit you just get a $20 fine and no points, we learn at a young age keep a $20 with your registration and Insurance card. And most cops will let you off with a warning @ 5 over and the $20 ticket at 15 over.

I've pulled even with him, rode alongside for awhile, letting him check out the challenger, make eye contact, get the head nod, then SLOWLY pull ahead. No problem. Most of those guys are car guys too.

I live near a section of Interstate 81 near the Canadian border that is #4 in the State of New York for tickets. I drive with my cruise control set at about 5-10 over and have never been pulled over. I even passed a State Patrol in Wisconsin, on a two lane road who was going 5 under and he never blinked. On the other hand, I was pulled over going to work at 3 am once because my license plate light wasn't bright enough.

Technically, 56 in a 55 is 'breaking the law'... however... we all do it as 55 is just insanely slow...
I've passed several times with luck... 2mph over and you could always use the 'my speedo said 55 excuse' and probably get away with it most of the time. But my opinion on this is that if they are crusing exactly the speed limit.. they are daring you, looking for an easy ticket... and will pull you over.
