I have had my 05 R/T AWD for about 4 weeks and love it. But I am Just wondering about some of the differences. Besides the obvious. Like what is the diff between floor mats, Whats up with the wheels and is there any other wierd things that we should know about? What are the specs on the AWD wheels? I did a seach and did not find much. Thank Everyone.

AWD sits 1" higher off the ground than the RT to give the transfer case ground clearance.

May the experts correct me if I am inaccurate:

The AWD has a higher rear end (gearing) than the RWD.

The AWD has higher wheel offset than the RWD. This may affect the choices of aftermarket rims and the lip depth of the available rims.

  • The AWD is actually geared lower to make up for the extra weight (400lbs?) of the AWD system the car has to car.
  • You will turn a few hundred RPM's higher than a non-AWD car will as a result of the gearing.
  • AWD cars use the smaller V6 rear differential (even R/T's) since they don't send 100% through the rear.
  • There is a hump in the passenger floorboard due to the transfer case.
That's all I can think of...

There is an intrusion in the passenger footwell where the transfer case is, that's why there are different mats.

The Factory AWD wheels are a +55 offset, much higher than the RWD's +20

for the AWD model:

their gas mileage is worse.

they have a tighter turning radius

they go better in the snow. they stop equally

the gear mentioned

they have open difs front and back

cant burn out on dry pavement. only wet/snow.

no cool wheels avail cause of the offset

they look identical except for the wheels and the AWD badge and the added height.

their front suspension is different and they dont make any sways bars that fit.

no long tube headers available.

i had an AWD for 6 months before i traded it in for a RWD model ;) i didnt care for the AWD tendancys.

I've been kicking the ESP on around turns AWD drift style and that's how I compensate for not being able to do burn-outs. I have had all drivelines in the past, and the AWD actually seems to turn better than FWD or other 4wd vehicles in parking maneuvers. If you were asking about a SXT AWD I tested one and it seemed that the power steering pump was undersized, but it's all good in the RT.

I went from RWD R/T to AWD R/T. Liked them both,AWD feels slower, may not be actually that much. The gear hopefully offsets the weight differential. Don't like the idea I can't get sway bars, or as many wheel options, still looking for wheels.

I subscribe to the theory that if the weather is bad enought to need AWD, stay home! I've had several AWD's and have observed drivers with the same. Go is better, stop is the same. Why do some of these drivers think their car is going to stop better? Wait until it melts. It always does. Oh. I forgot IMHO.

Sheesh... that's my favorite time to go driving!

That's why you see so many 4x4's in the ditch when it snows. It's always baffled me too.

I love my AWD. It doesn't have to be rotten weather to get the benefits from it. We had our first real rain tonight after a long dry spell. On my way home from work, I coast into corner a bit faster than I should have for the conditions. I felt the car start to slide a bit (wide road, nobody around, so not a big deal). I give the car some gas, and it pulls right out of it... no fear of rear tires breaking loose. Yeah... I'll keep my AWD! :)

Thanks for all the info. I love my Magnum It rides great, plenty of power and I can drive all year. I live near Cleveland Ohio. SNOW. I Think that this spring I will also be looking for a set of wheels. I like the five spoke look. I would love something that looks old school. Like a set of Torqe Thrust polished rims. Well thanks again.
