The Great LX-Weight Off!!

Ok here's the plan:

Plain fact is most of us can stand to lose some weight. It's hard because generally there's no accountability etc. We're gonna have a weight-loss competition. Anyone who wants in just let me know via PM and I'll add your name to the list. We'll start on 07 May 2007, depending on turn out I'll divide us into two or more groups by some kind of random drawing out of a hat.

From there I'll ask nicely for someone to make an Excel spreadsheet because I have no experience with them. We'll put everyone into their team. We'll list your starting weight and your target weight. Then we'll weigh in every week and update your current weight. We'll keep track of % lost, total lost, closest to target weight and anything else that would be of interest. Obviously we'll be going on the honor system :thumbs_u:

Oh and copy paste the two links in my sig into yours!

ANYONE CAN JOIN AT ANY TIME :)

I dropped 20 in the past three months... probably don't have enough left to go to be a strong competitor. You can count me in for moral support though :)

I am in
I'm in..I've been trying to lose some weight, this will be good incentive.

I think what might work better than the honor system would be 'before' pics from everyone who's participating.

Just a front and side pic, holding a newspaper or something with the current date (whenever you take the pic) on it, so a starting baseline can be established. To keep it on topic, we can take the pics next to our LX'es (which could really stand to lose some weight too, actually).

Then at the end, you take another pic and post it as well. I think that works better than someone saying "I lost 30 pounds, I win" using their old busted scale or something.

Pictures are worth a thousand words, as the saying goes...
Just food for thought, but there is more to fitness than trying to lower the number on the scale. When you do that you lose muscle too. A better way to measure is body fat percentage. If you do weight training the scale won't go down as fast as someone who cuts calories and starves (due to muscle weighing more than fat).
Its true that muscle weighs more than fat, but a lot of modern fitness theory seems to subscribe to the idea that a larger % of muscle will actually speed weight loss because your resting metabolism is higher, so you dont store as much fat.

Also, muscle requires more energy (calories) to maintain, so as you add muscle to your body, your body becomes a more effective 'machine', as it were. Storing less fat and burning more calories at rest. I've heard that theory disputed, but it seems to follow logically that a fitter person would use energy more efficiently.

A mix of cardio and weight training has always worked well for me in the weight loss cycle. Especially interval training. May not work for everyone, but I've never been big on endurance running or things like that. I think you can build a set of exercises to do in 1/2 hour to an hour that can significantly augment any weight loss regimen.

Anyone who's trying to do it with diet alone will probably not have great long-lasting results and will probably end up less 'healthy' in the long run.

I plan to do a combination of circuit training and calorie restriction, though I still plan to eat more often, like 6 times a day, but with smaller meals and healthy snacks. This keeps your metabolism on the boil and gives your body less time to convert food to stored energy (fat).

Sorry if the point of this thread isnt to share strategies/tips, though I suspect some might find it helpful (especially if those strategies pan out).

Ok, I'll play!

I'm 210 and want to get to 180.
How about using the google spreadsheet solution for the tracking?

Heres a sample..its web-based, updates every 5 minutes automagically.

I'll join, I got a membership to a gym that I never use... Now this will help me try to win.

They say they weigh about 4200 #'s, right? I'd like to see mine at about 3600.

I need to get my fat ass in shape. I'm in too.
Hey guys, for those of you that are getting in on this, here's a tip. No alcohol and no pop, with no other changes, was good for 6 lbs. in 30 days.

Let's see.......you're a waiter, real estate agent, LX Forum member, you write screenplays, a self-professed Spiderman whore, a good samaritan, an aspiring guitarist, a movie reviewer, banned from Wikipedia, and now a weight loss entrant in a competion.

No wonder you're overweight..........

you're 10 people!!!:Na_Na_Na_Na:
im in
WooHoo!!!!!

Im definately in.

Are we making sure we all weigh in at similar times? like on weigh in days at 7am, or something. The weight will be different depending on the time of day.
I will say I'm in...but I've been battling this all year. Since last november I've gained 23lbs...so I'm getting up to fatass stage quick..lol.

I'm right around 342 right now and would be happy at this point to get back to 315 to start. My problem is at that 315 I was at 5 years ago, I was also at only 12% bodyfat...which is now a far cry..lol.
