I was thinking I might want a small cheap mini-laptop to take on trips and such. Something that if gets lost or broken, won't give me a heart attack. It would only be used to internet (wired and wireless, whichever the hotels have), e-mail, and downloading pictures from my cameras to flash drives. Any advice? I am looking at under $500.00. It just has to be functional. I am not too knowledgable in this area. Thanks. :racing:

Take a peek at the Asus line of mini's if your looking for portable and price vs performance then it's a good place to start..

I have an Asus netbook I bought for $375 (probably even cheaper now). It was the cheapest that had Windows XP (not Linux). It is compatible with everything, the keyboard is big enough for me to type fast but it is still small enough to be very portable. I bought it for datalogging at the track and I use it every day now as a second computer at home with a wireless network. I sit on the couch by the TV and surf. It's nice because I don't have to go in a different room from the rest of my family to ignore them now :) Just kiddin honey!

I have an Acer Aspire One.

Couldn't be happier, and the keyboard is one of the better ones on the market, you actually get full size shift keys.

Acer was the one a buddy of mine just bought. Pretty small and the one he got doesn't have a HD, but was just $299 IIRC. Another $100 would have gotten him a 160GB HD, but he said he didn't really need it. Pretty sure he bought it locally too, so online will probably be even cheaper.

definitely go with an ASUS Eee. I just bought the 10" to take with me to class, and it is really amazing.
