Official Road Course Lap Timers

For those in the know that road course their cars, what official lap timers are out there? I know there are quite a few that offer just basic times and others that deal with full telemetry. Some require transponders while others are standalone. This thread is meant to be informative for those that have no clue and those who are looking for the next step up. I know there are a few hardcore guys out there. I'd like to know what your using and your thoughts on it and what might be better. Matt, Joel, Eric: i know you guys will have a lot to contribute to this and i am looking forward to your findings among others like Will and Pete who have dug into research as of late.

Lets get some good, focused information in here for reference guys.

I'll start with this one provided by Will.

http://www.qstarz.com/Products/GPS%20Products/BT-Q1000EX-F.htm

Approximate price is $149.99 at Amazon.

BT-Q1000eX is an extraordinary GPS Lap Timer with eXtreme 5Hz log speed which enables Q1000eX to log up to 5 times per second providing most accurate measurement of track, speed, and distance. Such characteristic makes Q1000eX very suitable for every kind of extreme sports activity, especially for super moto, road course motorcycles, oval cars, or road course autos. And drivers can also improve their lap time by valuable driving information.

Oh, I gotta get me one of these! :pepper: :thumbs_u:

I'm using the Hot-Lap timer I bought at last years NJMP event.
It has a receiver, and does require a separate transmitter operating beside the track. It has a receiver module and a readout module, which are connected by cable inside your car.
I've been looking around a bit and have been considering the GPS based video lap timers, very pricey! To date I've been using a borrowed XT Racing Ultra Lap timer http://xtracing.com/ . It has all the basics, great memory capacity and reasonably priced.
how bout this one? If you have a supported GPS phone i think it's free.

RaceChrono is a GPS based lap timing software for S60 and Windows Mobile smart phones. It can be used for almost all types of racing and outdoor sport. RaceChrono has rich lap analyzing features suited especially for motor sports, making it a great alternative to traditional car, karting and motorcycle lap timers
I've linked this thread in the LX Road Course Preparation thread!

Thanks Mike! :pepper:

Damn, no iPhone support.

The lap timer that Will used certainly seems to have huge features for such a reasonable price. I guess another big question that should be asked is:
What lap timers will be considered "legal" to use to earn footballs?

that's one of the exact reasons i started this thread. Hopefully the governing body of football ownership will step in.
I have a AMB Transponder. most racing clubs use that system. it does not give you in car times.
if you are running at a sancioned event your times are handed out on hard copy and posted on mylaps.com a day later. I also borrow a Hotlap timer from time to time. I woul really like to have a
Tracmate system to video sync video with. I just don't have the funds. I gotta buy Slicks & they are expensive & they dont last long on our cars if you are really run hard.
To get a football you need a stand alone gps timer or a non standalone unit which needs a trackside mounted transponder to give you your time. Either way is very accurate.
I would nix the idea of using cell phones for lap times, the gps refresh rates are not that good.

As an example from testing on my hero I see about 2 second refresh speeds, where as a dedicated GOS is 5, 10 or 20 mhz refresh thats 5 10 and 20 times a second.

I would think for GPS stuff it would need to have a refresh rate at a minimum of 5 samples a second.

Yup, 5mhz per second atleast...

so, I am leaning towards this system right now for next season. If i am going to buy something i want it to do everything and have additional inputs i can sync in and be of a level of quality i can live with for years. I can also use this from car to car so despite it being advanced telemetry it is portable and not permanently wired into a vehicle (some sensors are but they are cheap and can be left in each car)
OK. It's time for Santa to bring me a lap timer / track analyser for Christmas!

I plan to celebrate my retirement by lapping at various road circuits in the East next season. After reading through this thread, I'm looking for more feedback from you track gearheads.

Not looking to spend $1500 - after all my hardcore racing days are behind me. Just want to get accurate lap times and hopefully some analysis of where I can go faster.

So - which system should Santa get for me?
Well that comes down to how cool you want it to look when you post videos :)

Race Keeper is some high end stuff, but it will take obdII info, gps info etc and overlay that on video on the fly.

The little btq-1000 seemed to put up some ok results for Willand they have some decent software for viewing the data, not sure how much work it does on the data.

I would look at a package that will view all laps and build the "perfect" lap from recorded data to show what you need to tweek and where.

This year I stepped up to the Racelogic PerformanceBox. It runs at 10mhz per second in a nice compact unit that mounts to the window screen with suction cups. It has a nice display screen which tells you your best laptime, last laptime with a timer running of your current laptime. It uses sd memory cards and you don't need anything bigger than a 1gb. The files are so small that a card of that size should last you a 1000+ track days. All for a cost $499 shipped depending on where you purchase it from.

why can't i buy one that that works like a heads up display and projects a ghost car in the window to chase down like in GT...

This might be the one for me.

Thanks!
When I was in Sebring for Winterfest 2013 I was using Trackmaster.
