Ok, yesterday I got a new phone and planned on updating all my contacts and synching everything up with Outlook this morning in my office.

Driving in to work this morning I hear a report that there was a young woman murdered in Joliet, IL. They go further and state that the police would not release details of the murder except to say it was definately a murder. They also stated that the young woman was found lying in the snow next to a white Chevy Cavalier and the police would not comment on the connection between the vehicle and the young woman. Next they give an intersection near where the murder occured and say that is is the West Park neighborhood.

So... my daughter is 27, lives in the West Park neighborhood, drives a white Cavalier. Sh!t! To make matters worse, her number is not in my new phone yet, and since phones have their own phonebooks these days, I have NO CLUE what it is... GRRRRR!

I called my wife, (not my daughter's mom), and asked her to call my daughter and to make sure she is ok... She calls me back and tells me that I have totally freaked out my daughter by having my wife call her at 5:45 a.m. making my daughter think something has happened to me.

Lets get back tothe subject line above, and I probably should have made this a poll... But would you rather have the new media release the name of a victim when they report on these typess of things? Or would you rather they waited until they could notify the next of kin?

Right now, I wish they had given a name... maybe I'll feel differently after I lose some of the stress from this morning?

O man that sucks. Try to relax, friend...
I am all for the media withholding the name until next of kin is notified. Imagine how much worse it would be for someone to not only lose a family member...but also find out about it listening to the radio on the way to work. Ugh. Makes my stomach turn even thinking about it.

wow...i'm glad she's ok though, i would rather have them notifie me in person, instead of releasing it to the public first, like meg said horrible thing to hear over the radio when your on your way to work...or not even hear it on the radio and finding out from other people and being in shock. just my .02

Glad she's OK ... I can wait until the authorities do their sworn duty and notify families of lost loved ones before the names are released ... I think we already get far too many knee-jerk, sound-bite, get the story first crap as it is ... they are accurate about as often as the Weather Channel ... and retractions for Panic Button reporting are always buried on the "back page" if any apology is made at all for false reporting or over-reaction .... I'm sure it was hard for you when so many pieces fit a potential puzzle that it gave you a moment of dread ... I, for one, wish there was more NEWS and less "news" ... your opinion may vary.

No Kidding!

If they had even mentioned a description of the victim, I'd have been ok. Sigh...

Really sucks for that person's family:(

Hopefully they catch the person who did it quickly... much too close to home.

S*** Don!!! Glad it wasn't her!!!! I mean... well, ideally it wouldn't be anybody. You know what I mean.

I can't imagine that feeling... but it can't be quite as bad as hearing her name on the news and finding out that way. I think the names should still be withheld... but honestly, unless there is information to be released for people to help police apprehend the suspect (suspect vehicle make/model/plate or suspect description or something) then I honestly don't think the story should air at all until the family is notified. What's the difference if you find out today or tomorrow that a stranger was murdered, you're not going to change your lifestyle. Let the family know, then let the public know that something tragic happened.

Yea, the more they reported, the more the coincidences were adding up...

West Park is a small park with woods, one side borders I-80 the other three sides are residential streets. My daughter lives just a few houses on the other side of I-80, on a street named... "West Park".

That would have scare the living hell out of me. I can only imagine what was going through your head.

Wow, that would have freaked me out!! However, think how bad it would feel if you saw it on the 6 clock news for the first time.

I am all for waiting for notification of NOK. During my first deployment to Iraq, I was attacked and survived (obviously). However, rumor went around that I did not make it and a buddy of mine took it upon himself to contact my wife. Not a good thing.........but kinda funny in hindsight though. But anyways, if everyone would have waited for notification of NOK....all would have went smoothly for my family.

CdesmondO, I can see your point. Thinking about this all day... I am more pissed about the media... if they had reported more details, or none, it would have been better for me... guess that is a self centered point of view... forgive me, I'm biased, (yet very happy it wasn't MY daughter), today.

Also, this happened last night, a man found the body at 11:00 p.m., the BF was arrested at 3 this morning, yet when they were reporting it this morning they made it sound like it just happened and they didn't say there was a suspect in custody:(

I think the media should not report the story until after the next of kin have been notified. In your situation, the coincidence of the car and neighborhood being the same as your daughter, would make me do the same thing. But think of it like this, a military member is killed and his wife heres about her husbands death on the radio. Or she has some one else call here and tell her they heard about her husbands death and they want to extend their condolences.

Also...if you hear something like that on the news....I think you can call the local police if you are worried that it might be a family member. Give a name and description, ect....

I think if you'd had your daughter's number and had been able to reach out to her immediately to check on her, then all this wouldn't have been AS nerve-racking. I agree with the others, sit tight until next-of-kin is notified. Like I tell my mom when she's worrying about my brother in Iraq. "No news is good news."
