My car has made noises on cold startup since I bought it used with 12,000 Kms that, to me sound like a collapsed lifter. I took the car in to a dealership a month after purchase, and they kept it overnight so they could listen to it in the morning, only to be told it was normal noises for the 5.7. I recently took it back to another dealership, again they kept it for other work, so I told them to check the noise on cold startup. They told me that when I came to pick it up, they would listen to it with me. I went to pick it up, and they had it in the heated shop. They start the car up, and guess what? No noise. I check the temp. gauge, and it's already up to temperature.
I tried explaining to them that I've heard plenty of you guys start your cars, and none of yours clack like mine seems to. Their response was that there was a bulletin for the 5.7, but that in their experience they could rip it apart, and rebuild the top end, but it wouldn't fix the problem. time to go to another dealership, this one sucks. I also asked them to asses the paint as my clear coat is flaking. they had the car for a week, I called them three times for an update, to be told each time, " our service manager will look at the lifter and paint tomorrow." They didn't look at either until I showed up to pick the car up, then asked if they could keep the car another night so they could send it to their body shop for assesment. How 'bout no you frikken idiots. I took my car and left. Is the art of customer service dead, it seems like everywhere I go, for anything I want done, I'm dealing with the mildly retarded. if anyone has a suggestion on a service dept. that doesn't suck, please let me know. I'm gonna try Coquitlam Chrysler on monday.

I have a bit of lifter noise on mine collin because of the MDS system. I would have to hear it though to be sure its the same sound. As far as the paint goes, head to the dealer you bought the car from hopefully its a dodge/chrysler dealer and approach the salesmen there. If he or she is no longer working approach the GM and tell him your issue with the service dept. and the paint issue. GOODLUCK!! :D

You could have the documented "Hemi Tick" that is common with the 5.7's.............the valve train of the 5.7's are known to be and make "ticking" sounds...........

Yeah, was at the dealership I bought it from. I've owned plenty of pushrod V-8s in my time, but this bitch is noisy, and it goes away once it warms up. I can understand a bit of noise on start up, but it shouldn't take ten minutes to build up oil in the lifters.

I understand there's a tick that's common to the 5.7, but I've been listening to others in the club start their cars for a while now, and none of them seem as noisy as mine. Maybe I'm just paranoid about it, but better safe than sorry.

5w-20. Castrol syntech, changed every 5000 Kms. Has made this noise as long as I've owned it, and I have documentation of two different dealerships looking at it at my request.

I did the same thing Colin my car ticks so loud at start up and goes away once it is warm I took it to the dealer and they told me that is common on the 5.7 it bothers me as well..... so I know exactly what you are talkin about...if we both go to meet on Sunday and let them cool off we can compare to see who's tick is louder. I am also running the same oil as you.

A little insight to why dealer service sucks. Techs do NOT get paid to diagnose warranty issues. They are 100% commission on the work they perform not hourly or salary. So it's an absolute waste of their time and money if they stop work on a car that pays to give a free diagnostic. IMO they should have one guy thats salary to diagnose problems, then I believe customer satisfaction would be greatly improved.

Mine has a very healthy tick from day one when cold, hasn't blown up or gotten any worse 6.1
it was annoying and then I just got used to it. Had it checked three times in the past all say normal.
But agree with you about the "mildy retared" part with Dealerships.

It is normal......when it's cold the clearances on the motor will be a little looser and the oil being as thin as it is allows a little extra noise......as the oil pressure builds and the parts warm and expand the clearances tighten up and the noise goes away.
