I set up Windows Servrer 2003 Enterprises edition here at home for training purposes and it seems like it's working properly. I have Active Directory and DNS running.

The problem is I can't get my Laptop to join the Domain. It's running Win XP Pro. I configured the wired connection to use the server as the primary DNS and it seems to be communicating but every time I try to join I get one of 2 messages: The server can not perform the requested task at this time or, unknown user name or bad password.

The log in box pops up and I've tried User dannyc (the way it's set up on the server) and also [email protected]. I'm not sure which is correct. The box is looking for an email for user. Domain name: CONTOSO.

I have an account on the server with my name and a password that meets the server requirements, ie using upper and lower case and numbers, 8 characters long.

When I ran the wizzard thats supposed to help it said I needed a computer account. I went into AD and the server added my laptop name in computers but was disabled. I enabled it, checked my user account which was not disabled but still can't connect.

What am I missing?

TIA,
Danny

Adding the pc to the domain you need to use the administrator account and password when it asks and after the reboot you can login as you ..

that is correct, to clarify a bit more, it needs to be the DOMAIN ADMIN account, the local laptop admin account doesn't have Domain Admin Rights..

Actually the Windows firewall was the problem. I logged in as local admin tried to join with the user name and password of the Domain Admin account and it didn't work. I turned off the Windows Firewall on the server and joined right up.

Thanks. I was an NT admin years ago and trying to get up to speed on this stuff again.
