LSD's all the way! I have heard many horror stories about buying some generic kits that aren't strong enough to hold the door up thus falling off. Go right the first time and spend the extra money and get LSD's.

Oh, and one BIG piece of advice....

Request a stronger ram for the driver's side door. Both E and I had problems with the over-use of the driver door leading to a weakened ram support and the door can be hard to lift, or will not stay up. E was able to get one for $50 from LSD and they refunded him the cash when he mailed them his used ram. When you are buying you should be able to request the swapout before they ship and save yourself the hassle.

This condition worsens in cooler temperatures, so if you live where it gets cold the upgrade is a NECCESSITY.

Nick,
I'm the local guy you were looking for in your post, sorry I missed it. Thanks to Charg-um and Bandit for the heads up info.
Just as Bandit says, The LSD kit is the best. I had heard through Josh at HHP about the Hydraulic ram arm issue. No problems yet but but LSD customer service sounds good. I plan on contacting them about my kit to query about the issue. They may have made a production change by the time my kit was mfg.

I have seen LSD's done right and LSD's done cheap. First, don't do it unless you're willing to do it right and spend the money to do it right.

Redsleds are the best I've seen... I haven't seen any other forum members... but RedSled's construction, function, and fitment would be IMHO the way to go... You're already on the right track !

Good Luck!

As long as it's LSD, you're fine. If your installer can read, he really can't mess it up. LSD provides detailed instructions, and has terrific resources on their website. My installer was able to look on their website the night before I showed up with the kit to map out how he was going to do it.

LSD is the ONLY crash tested kit. It is the only one that gives you the quality and reliability that they do. Look at this hinge:

It's one gauge steel. I think it may be stronger than my Magnum's frame! LOL

I saw a gorgeous 300C with a different kit at one of our local meets and many of us commented on how it was put together. if you leaned on his fender, it would buckle in. The wiring was sloppy too. LSD's wiring is clean and tucked away nicely.

I did a lot of research on various kits and discovered LSD was the only way to go. After talking with several dealers, ALL of them (even ones who did not carry LSD) suggested going the LSD route.

Here is a nice graph to give a side by side comparo on the most well known brands:

I have the LSD doors on my Magnum now for over 15k miles and love them.

The are crash tested, life time warranty, and are hands down the best made.

Give me a call and I can hook you up.

Whatever you do, DON'T get a weld-on kit. Install will cost you 5 times more than the kit. If it were my car (which some day it might be, after the trend dies down), I wouldn't accept a kit that wasn't crash-tested. LSD's kit is certified by the TUV, which is Germany's equivalent of DOT or SAE, only they're even more strict. I wouldn't want some cheap floppy hinge that some dude I barely know welded on having to withstand a side impact on my car with me inside it, that's for sure. Their install videos don't show any cutting, but they're for a Volkswagon something or another, so maybe this varies by application.

It does vary by application.

The part that is cut is a non-essential part of the fender. I can't find a way to describe it, but there's like a rib running down the inside of the fender, and it must be notched out to make room for this massive 25lb hinge.

It does nothing to decrease the structural rigidity of the fender.

Anybody get a comparison of the weight between the stock hing and the LSD? 25 lbs sounds huge... I can't imagine the stocker would be more than 2 or 3. Not that you're concerned with shaving 0.001's off your 1/4-mi time if you're doing the door converstion, just curious.

The shipping weight for the kit was 50 pounds from what I remember. The kit isn't much more than the hinges (some wiring stuff and bolts really) so each hinge is just about 25lbs.

If I had to guess my removed stock hinges (4 total) were MAYBE 1lb each.

Go with the LSD, my install was done asome also. My installer whent a step above a lot of others and saudered all the wire conections so the install looks real good! Except the door jam still needs to be painted. LSD gave you all the poop, so Ill just say that they take some getting use to.
Only thing is you might have to teach the passanger and the Valet how to work them. In warm weather you need to push down on the door more to close it. ^^
