I have the classic fuel tank lifetime warranty symptoms. Car shows exact symptoms that are described on NHTSA investigation. I cannot get a dealership to return my messages or call me back regarding my issue over stalling after fill up. Had one dealership actually take the car on a diagnostic drive. The car stalled on them but wanted more diagnostic fees to continue to test the car. They refused to do any more work on the car without me paying $400 for an extra diagnostic drive. Can anyone lead me in the direction to take with getting this warranty fuel tank installed?

My current attempts:
-1 dealer in person service center stated they no longer have a Starscan to work on an ‘06
-1 dealer in person service center gave me a service center phone number. Left message and was never contacted
-1 dealer took car into service center. Car stalled on mechanic. Refused any more diagnostic/work if I didn’t pay diagnostic fee. I contacted Dodge directly and they said to not let that dealer work on the car
-1 dealer to my info and never called me back

On top of all this I’m trying to get the airbag recall taken care of and state to dealer that is my main concern and still cannot get a return call.

Any help/experiences you may have are greatly appreciated.

That is a lie about star scan - that unit was phased out years ago. Now we use Wi-Tech2. Completely compatible with your vehicle. Find another dealer or contact Chrysler again to see if they know a dealer close to you to repair vehicle.
Thanks for the info! I figured the Starscan claim was suspect. I’m 3 months in to trying to get a return call from any dealer within an hour of me. It’s become highly frustrating that warranty work is being ignored.

I got my airbag recalls done on my current '06 when I bought it in '17. Didn't have any issues there. I may have helped the situation along by having them do all the module updates (charged me an hour labor I think?) since the car only had 10K miles at that point and had sat for years, likely hadn't been to the dealer for any updates since it was brand new. So, they got a few bucks off me that day instead of just freebie recall work. They tried to upsell me on a bunch of fluid flushes etc. and I just looked at the guy sideways and said, this car is still brand new..

At that point I hadn't had it long enough for it to develop the tank issue but it has finally set in. Not looking forward to battling with dealers to get it handled. I really hate letting anyone else work on my vehicles at all. I wonder if there's a path to order the parts, pay for them, do it myself, and get reimbursed? I don't really relish the idea of having to swap a tank that should be warrantied, but I also know that the warranty work often gets thrown at the low man on the totem pole at the dealership; nobody wants to do the warranty jobs.

@tannercoy Dealing with the same issue on my '05 300c. Called Chrysler first to confirm my ride was a candidate and got a case number. They xferred my call to the local dealership, and it was put into voice mail. After numerous call to the Service Manager, and no reply, I stopped by to schedule an apt. Had case number, and copy of the X53 notice... all they would they would say is: "We'll need to diagnose, and car must be left for several days". They would not address any cost or time limits. Apt is a few weeks out at this point.

Realizing that this was sort of a blank check for them, I contacted ChryslerCares to ask how much time is allotted for diagnosing. That is, just to determine if the tank is at fault... they replied with fluff. I've asked the question again and unless a clear answer is provided... my appointment will be cancelled.

I don't need someone to 'diagnose' beyond the tank. I would understand an hour charge if they came back and said it wasn't... but I'm not going on the hook for hundreds of dollars to confirm what's obvious. And if it is, there shouldn't be any charge. They should be able to say yes/no within an hour, IMO.

Sadly, it appears ChryslerCares about making sure their dealers can milk us more than to make good on their faulty design. Truly frustrating

I just filled up my 2006 SRT Charger with 91 octane and had it die at numerous stop lights and hesitate between 1500 and 2000 RPM and I found this post. I'm not sure what size tank it has being an SRT. My cabin smells of exhaust and gas now. Car ideled fine 30 minutes later in the driveway but that was sitting still. Do you guys have a number for Chrysler I can call?

FYI I just replaced the coolant tube and removed the intake manifold so that meant replacing the intake manifold gaskets so I wasn't sure if the problem was associated with my recent work, highly doubtful. I noticed it did run slightly hot today at 225 instead of 205 degrees.

You should be able to get a build sheet for your ride, by visiting:
copy the address and enter your vin number after the =
The link will not bring anything up as it is because it's incomplete wo/your vin

I first learned of the X53 Warranty on our sister site

It upsets me when I hear these stories. If I was handed a stall out after fill up, and found the lifetime replacement for fuel tank, I would order tank and stop fooling around. I did my 2006 a while back, and a cherry low mile R/T Charger. No tech I know is going to the hassle of checking vent valve in fuel tanks when it is common TSB.

I hear you man. What replacement parts do you need for the repair? Is it more than just a new gas tank? Pump replacement and filter replacements would obviously get done as well.

Thanks

Generally from what I've seen they do not replace the pumps/seals. Only the tank.

What it is, some how on fill up, fuel gets into the evap purge system. After fill up when engine started, purge valve is actuated by pcm and raw fuel gets into engine. Years ago I had one of the first on a new SRT8 I believe. Our hot line was really good back then. Was told to fill up and when car died - remove purge line from intake and see if fuel there. Sure enough it was. I remember getting bar code off fuel tank to report case.

"The jobs sucks for what Chrysler pays but it is what it is..."
This makes sense now, at least it explains why customer service starts with 'diagnosis' and leaves the door open for the dealership to follow suit. Chrysler isn't paying what they should, and shifts some cost to us.

Putting aside the costs for a moment, is there anything that can be done prior to bringing it in that would make life easier for the tech? (other than having low fuel level)

"...fill up and when car died - remove purge line from intake... "
I asked if diagnosing was simply filling the tank, and they said it wasn't. Besides, if the tank is full, it makes swapping the tank a PITA what with handling all that fuel. How or what else would constitute diagnosing?

I read many of these stories about warranty work and it breaks my heart. Sadly, I've had a number 'warranty malfunctions' too. My income is now fixed, but decent and steady.

I may end up volunteering to pay the difference between what the manufacturer pays and what it cost to get the job done right. Had the most issues with GM cars but haven't bought GM in decades.

Mopar is a close second as my last Mopar, a 1985 LeBaron GTS, various dealers refused to repair or had no one on staff competent enough to do various minor repairs. I ended up paying for a number of minor repairs out of pocket the warranty should have covered - a few I performed myself. The GTS was a pretty decent car overall.

My 300S has been trouble free so far and enjoy the ownership experience.

When reading the actual warranty info a while back (can't find where it's posted at the moment) - "diagnosis" was literally supposed to be if the customer complains of stalling after filling the tank, replace the tank. Looks like the dealers have decided to attempt to turn a warranty job into profit by adding diagnostic fees to it.
