As I was driving home in my GTO on i-595 west today, a 300C caught up to me, and then there was some traffic, he maneuvered around me and was ahead. It was an SRT8.

He jumped on it before i-595 turned into I-75 North (toward Naples) and got quite a bit ahead. I was still stuck in traffic.

However he waited for me.

Then we both waited to pass a well-known speed trap.

There were no troppers at the trap and the highway was pretty clear, so he gunned it and I gunned it too. At 100, he was slightly pulling away. I got up to 120, he was still slightly pulling away. At this point I didn't want to go any faster. So i let go off the gas pedal and let the engine slow me down.

Then the strangest thing happened. Chunks of something black started flying from under the SRT8, and something black flapped down from the bottom of SRT8 to the ground, like an airbrake. He slowed down and started pulling over to the right shoulder. As I passed him, I saw something like a big sheet of plastic flapping up and down under his car.

I feel bad now that I didn't stop and check if everything was OK. Just didn't think about it. I guess when I am on the road my goal is to get from point A to point B without stopping anywhere. [so SRT8 dude, if you are reading this - sorry that I didn't stop]

But what could this be flapping under the car, I don't think he caught something from the road.

All our LX vehicles have a stupid poorly secured shroud under our oil pan and tranny...

They have been know to be put back even less secure by thoughtless technicians... at those speeds, it's common to find out the hard way that your oil techs suck and don't know what they are doing.

Welcome and thanks for posting your story!

Probably a plastic dust shield the cars have up front. It's a PITA. Needs to be removed to gain any type of access to the underside. I can see if someone were to bottom out a few times the front plastic clips braking off which would allow air to get in there and at high speeds pushing it down enough that if a pothole or something that would cause the car to dip and have it hit the ground it would break off. Sounds like you had fun though!

The belly pan has a torque spec on it even, and a torque sequence. Damn technicians! The dealer should replace it, unless he changes his own oil.

Ye, cool that you posted ruski. Saw my 1st GTO yesterday. (was @ a car show in the US) I live in Canada. Don't know if we got any here? Nice lookin' car! Take care.

Thanks for the welcomes. I am partially a Mopar guy, used to drive a 300M, and now wife drives a Pacifica.

So the SRT8 guy should have made it home OK once he found out what it was. I still feel bad about not pulling over.

I also feel bad about him gaining on me, I have to go talk to my Goat and get some debriefing from her. :) I thought I should be able to at least have a tie.

But I am glad that I slowed down too.

P.S. Plastic shroud you say? We have a really thick piece of metal for a skidplate that protects the oil pan and filter. It looks like a piece of armor. It must be the weight of my skidplate that didn't let me win :)

I had a tow over my black plastic skidplate (total joke) two weeks ago. In the dark at 12:30 AM it looked like it tore on something in the road and was dragging... get it towed, go look at it the next day in the light, and sure enough, all I had to do was pop it back on. Stellar design.....
Good story, too. The GTO can certainly put on a show, but the SRT-8's are nothing to mess around with. I'm pretty sure you'd wallop an RT though.

Happened to me at 145 mph with a group of 17 LXers. What a day! The biggest problem is you park too close to the concrete stops (especially in the SRT) then back away and this thing gets flipped the wrong way. You don't notice until it actually comes off like that.

Lucky MattRobertson had some bright red duct tape with him. It matched perfectly!!

A few weeks ago a Magnum RT ran away from me, but he was using heavy traffic and weaving to do this. I don't weave.
(Do Magnum RT's have an "R/T" badge or "RT"? the one that ran away had a small "RT" badge on its rear)

I thought GTO and SRT8 cars would be pretty evenly matched.

2005 had 'RT'... 2006 had a larger 'R/T'. I don't dig weavin in traffic either... it doesn't prove anything because it doesn't make for a fair race, and it's hella-dangerous.
