Hey guys. I havent posted much on here, but Im going to be doing a cam only install pretty soon for my winter project. I found a pretty good wright up on here, what im wondering is how many of you, used magnets to hold the lifters back when doing it? How did you keep the magnet from falling down the hole also? Im going to be doing the SRT Max cam. Thank you for any help

I did NOT use the magnets.
I used a very small diameter piano wire and turned the end into a TINY hook.
This was inserted into each lifter and the lifter GENTLY pull upward until it met small resistance.
Upon re-install, I make sure each push rod "clunked" the lifter into the camshaft.
Worked great for me.

After you pull the timing chain and the pushrods, quickly spin the cam a few times. The lifter bores are almost parallel with the ground. The oil surrounding them in the bores will hold them up out of the way.

I used screw starters/pick-up magnets. You just lay them down flat on the head. The extra drag from the magnet keeps the lifters up.

Valve covers, T-stat housing and timing chain are all O ringed or have reusable gaskets... A little RTV for the very bottom corners of the timing cover won't hurt.

I was looking at the Screw Starters, I printed off your how-to. How do the screw starters work?? never seen them.
The screw starters are a little thinner than a pencil and have a strong magnet on the end of them. They're basically fancy pick-up tools.

be really careful if you do the cam without anything to hold the lifters......I know alot of guys have done it ......but I also know alot of guys that spun the cam only to have the lifters slide back down.If one does drop you will be pulling the motor.

3 successful tries w/ just the oil to hold them... but that doesn't mean there's not a chance one could slide down.

Only takes once to make you wish you had done something so simple to hold them... When doing mine, my BiL dropped a pushrod down an oil passage. As I walked around suppressing the urge to choke the living **** out of him for such a bonehead move, and thinking about how much I'd have to pull to retrieve it, he managed to pull it back up with a magnet Hemiwagn had.

Trust me, you don't want that feeling if a lifter drops. It's not a nice one at all...

You know someone that had a lifter fall all the way in requiring them to pull the motor?
