SRT Engineers Round Table Discussion

Tuesday, March 12th, 2013 5pm - 7pm ET

We are welcoming back the SRT Engineers to the LxForums!

The ground rules:
  • First off, the SRT Engineers take time out of their busy schedule making go fast goodies to be here to answer our questions. Let's show them the proper courtesy and patience. There will be many questions and they may not be able to answer every question asked. If your question is skipped, please be patient as questions are not answered in order.
  • Please only ask one or two questions. There are lots of people who want to ask questions, so let's give everyone a chance.
  • Stay on the topic at hand. SRT Vehicles! Keep the off-topic chat to the other sections of the website. There is to be no discussion between members in this forum. Ask your question and enjoy the replies from the Engineers!
  • If your question has already been asked (by you or someone else). Don't re-post it in hopes to get it answered quicker.
  • Make sure you let the SRT Engineers know what model SRT vehicle you are driving or inquiring about. Yes, a head gasket is quite different between an SRT8 and an SRT4.
  • As much as everyone is salivating over what comes in the future, the SRT Engineers cannot answer any questions regarding future product.

SRT engineers, it's been a while. Welcome back, and thanks for opening up these discussions again; I've either participated or observed since 2005. I want you to know that we appreciate this opportunity, as there are too many players in the automotive world that don't reach out to their customers this way, so we can all be part of the excellence of your products. I'm on SRT product #3, and as long as you keep your mantra of "bang-for-the-buck" at the price points you're at, I will continue to do so. Your products really do shine in the niche in which they live, and while they're not perfect, they're darned close.

Now that paragraph of sentimental stuff is out of the way, couple of questions / some feedback about the current generation of LX SRT8s (which I have a 300):

1. Question: Any possibility we can see UConnect updates? I'd like to see a nominal fee ($25? / $50?) for the opportunity to "update" my car's entertainment software once a year to include stuff like the slight layout change for 2013, enhancements and tweaks between years, etc. Feedback: I know you can't comment on future product, but updates via household WiFi would be super in the future.

2. Question: Headlight condensation. Link from the 300CForums, and link from CherokeeSRT8. I know there is a STAR notice for this; dust covers for the vent holes. There needs to be a better way to get this info to dealers, as folks using the forums are finding dealers still not aware of this, and I can only imagine what people not using the internet are experiencing. It's concerning that 2013s are leaving the factory without the dust covers (as some owners are finding condensation in their lights), and it still seems "wishy-washy" if the dealership will order / install if owners are having the issue. It also appears that after the dust cover install, some owners still get mild to severe condensation. This may be more "Chrysler / Jeep" than "SRT", but wondering if you are aware of this or have input.

Suggestion: USB charge port on the back of the interior rearview mirror for radar detectors / dashcams, etc.

Feedback: SRT Experience. Can you show your Canadian owners some love? I already have to travel X kilometers to get somewhere in the US it's being hosted, but I'd prefer not to pay the "you don't have an SRT fee" if I just bought a new $55k SRT. I am a sad Canadian.

Feedback: Garmin updates. $150 per year is ridiculous for something I get free on every, other, digital device, including portable Garmins! I know this is probably more Garmin licensing than your involvement, but ugh!

I've also got a "suggestions" thread going elsewhere in the forums with more feedback for you guys that you can take offline. I was planning on coming to Spring Fest for the sole reason of being able to shake Ralph's hand, along with all the other SRT folks to say, "thanks for all the sh*ts and giggles since 2004", but ended up having to cancel our plans. So I am an even sadder Canadian. But again, thanks for being involved in activities like Spring Fest. Also, a shout out to "ChryslerCares"; I see helpful advice from this person (persons) on all the forums I lurk, and it's just another way you folks go a little further.

Now hurry up with that Dart SRT (or FWD 250HP R/T, 300+ AWD SRT, or both, or whatever) because I can't convince ALL of SRTForums.com to buy SRT8s or wait much longer.

1. I really feel bad that Ralph Gilles decided to leave NASCAR. Was that his choice? Or just following the lead of his superior's?

2. Will the SRT Dart be available this year?

Thank you!!!!!

Why don't they make longtube headers form the factory? Emissions, fitment, cost?

Is there a specific RPM limit where the stock NAG1 transmission will be damaged? I know the TCM programming is set up to limit RPMs. Is this to protect the trans, motor or both. Looking for limitations on high rpm use of NAG1 in non-stock application. I'm at 7000 rpm shifts now but wonder if there is a known failure point beyond that.

#62 ·
Yes, emissions and fitment are the reason. The CAT bodies are fairly low already and lowering them further than today would not be good for thermal shock performance when driving over puddles/floods. Also, the CAT brick sizes are optimized to insure emission regulatory compliance.... so they can't be reduced.

On my 2008 SRT8 Jeep, why does my front differential vent tube always blow out gear oil when its cold? It's not overfull, I checked. I think dealers installed a catch can for this as a "fix"? Is that the only option for a fix?

Thank you, and keep up the great work!
This is the first I've heard of this one. If the axle is purging oil, a catch can would do the trick. It's been a while since I've been inside that axle, but i thought there was baffel over the inside of that vent. If it's damaged or missing that could be it.

Thank you for returning to answer our questions; can you please speak to what are the key engine management / control value differences within the 05-08' SRT PCM, versus the RT PCM are desirable from a performance standpoint?

#49 ·
The PCM is the same hardware - the calibration differences are related to the specifics of the engine and include fuel, spark and airflow. Displacement, heads, CR, intake manifold, exhaust manifolds and camshaft design of course play into the particulars of the calibration. In other words, different engines, different cals...

welcome back

Great to have you guys back!! These chat's are one of the primary reasons I purchased my first new SRT.. and have continued to purchase more!!! These are invaluable sources of information and truly appreciated!!

on the newer adjustable suspension SRT8's is there a way to install the new mopar coilovers (with the larged bracket from the revised control arm) without throwing an adjustable suspension code (since those pieces would be gone)? Can the dealer disable that module/component group and/or turn of the trouble code checking routine.. would pulling the ADS fuse work??

if thats not possible will the stiffer mopar lowering springs allow the stock (ADS) adjustable shocks to operate in the correct range (design limit thresholds) without ong-term terminal side effects?

Thanks for any insight you can provide!

There is not an ADS delete package available since it is intergrated into the electrical diagnostics of the vehicle, but you can install the mopar lowering springs without causing any issues with the vehicle.

Last SRT chat session you stated at ~4800rpm the SRV manifold transitions to short runner mode. I have adapted the manifold to function on a 440+ aluminum block in a 05' Magnum along with a reliable control system utilizing the OEM actuator. I noted pin 4 of the actuator sits a 6.5VDC and goes low when the manifold transitions to short runner mode. I use an LED which is forward-biased by connecting to pin 4 and to pin 3. This provides a visual aid to display the actuator has PWR and when exceeding the rpm set-point (and valves open) the LED will turn off. My question is does the PCM monitor servo actuation / positioning off of pin 4?

You also stated that there was significantly more area under the curve across the rpm range, can you be more specific? I'll assume you the SRT aluminum intake manifold is / was your baseline?

In your learned opinion how many Nm or ft / lbs do you think the NAG1 is safe to endure? Subjective I know, but during your thrashing (enjoyable I am sure) of those product offerings that use this transmission, what's your comfort zone?

#57 ·
As you might imagine the answer is "It depends". To be able to enjoy the production life and shift quality there's not much room left (read as we are already making the orginnal design engineers nervous). There are plenty of examples of customers running torques as high as 500 ft-lbs, but the life of this set-up is highly dependent on how you drive it. It will not last forever behind that much torque.

#17 ·
I'm NOT sure IF this is your area of expertise; but, I bought a dealer demo SRT8 Magnum with 1,700 miles on it and the SRT Experience was never used. I tried and tried calling the folks and only explaination I was given was the YEAR was up. At the time of purchase, the dealer had actually had the car over a year. Seemed kind of silly to me and I thought I'd be able to do this especially since it was, or so I thought, in the price of the vehicle.

Thank YOU for what you do and for being here.

And we NOW own 3 SRTs, we bought TWO used 300SRTs last fall.

How are you guys liking the new facility at frc?

Thanks for taking the time to answer our questions! No additional question but interested to hear an answer to that headlight condensation question as well. Thanks again!

I'd like to lower my Gen V Viper GTS when it arrives, but don't want to sacrifice ride quality or handling. Will the spring lowering caps that fit the Gen IV also fit the Gen V? Will the lowering caps be compatible with the 2-mode adjustable Bilsteins? They drop the Gen IV about 0.7", I've been told.

Any adverse affects or issues? I don't want to ruin the handling or make the ride stiffer, just want her to sit a little lower.

Thanks! Can't wait for my new snake.

WELCOME BACK!!!
Tuning question(Not sure if this has been addressed....) Now that full tuning& access to more or all tables is available for the 6.4 through approved shops, any hope for the 6.1? Instead of using the "piggyback" system we have now & limited access!

I take delivery of a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT at the end of this month. This is far worse than Christmas x 100 as a child for me.

I'm wondering if the exhaust and the way the exhaust connects is the same as with the 12/13 WK2's? I'm looking to change my exhaust to a Borla ATAK set up, but need to make asure the underpinnings/mounts are the same before ordering the new exhaust.

Thank you for your time!

As always gents, thank you so much for coming here to LxF. To have a manufacturer come and speak with the owners and enthusiasts like this on a regular basis is just the coolest thing ever. It really shows you care and are listening.

My question:

Let's hear the story on Motor Trend's test of the ZR1 vs the Viper. Do you guys think it was a ringer? (P.S. Ralph is my hero for calling them out publicly...well, he is my hero regardless, but still).

What do you guys think of the new Vette and how it compares to the Viper?

Thanks!

Can't say either way for sure. Just know that SRT doesn't cheat with out media cars. As we say about racing, "You have to win despite any cheating." Don't worry. Their record won't stand for long.

We like the Vette! It is the best Vette since the 60's. Lots of performance per $, and fast given the weight and 450hp. Best damn girl's car ever made.

Thanks SRT for giving the time to hold this round table..
I have 3 questions:
1- a lot of 2011+ Charger owners have inquired with many dealers about the parts of the Redline concept. I, for one, was told that those parts despite having a Mopar part number were never produced.. So most of us were lift out with a look we liked but can't have... Are you actually offering theses parts or were there a change?
2- is the 3 variants of the Gen-3 Aluminum HEMI 426 based on the Aluminum 6.1 crate engine?
3- Lastly, will SRT show any new production or concept model at New York Autoshow?

thanks again for having this session..

The Charger Redline was only a concept vehicle so unfortunate the body components will not be available. The Gen 3 426 aluminum hemi is its own crate engine but, it is based on the 6.1L design.
