SRT Engineers Round Table Discussion

Tuesday, March 12th, 2013 5pm - 7pm ET

We are welcoming back the SRT Engineers to the LxForums!

The ground rules:
  • First off, the SRT Engineers take time out of their busy schedule making go fast goodies to be here to answer our questions. Let's show them the proper courtesy and patience. There will be many questions and they may not be able to answer every question asked. If your question is skipped, please be patient as questions are not answered in order.
  • Please only ask one or two questions. There are lots of people who want to ask questions, so let's give everyone a chance.
  • Stay on the topic at hand. SRT Vehicles! Keep the off-topic chat to the other sections of the website. There is to be no discussion between members in this forum. Ask your question and enjoy the replies from the Engineers!
  • If your question has already been asked (by you or someone else). Don't re-post it in hopes to get it answered quicker.
  • Make sure you let the SRT Engineers know what model SRT vehicle you are driving or inquiring about. Yes, a head gasket is quite different between an SRT8 and an SRT4.
  • As much as everyone is salivating over what comes in the future, the SRT Engineers cannot answer any questions regarding future product.

With the 2014 Jeep SRT getting the 8-speed 8HP70 transmission, how much fuel economy improvement can we expect from the outgoing 12 city / 18 highway 5-speed NAG1?

Is the 2013 Viper GTS/SRT a vehicle that is included in the 2013 SRT Track Experience?

For when I make the decision to upgrade my 2012 SRT Challenger to the next one that many of us are waiting very, very patiently for, is there any chance that loyal SRT owners can get a small upgrade rebate for when I decide to upgrade to my next SRT vehicle (It'll be a 2014 Jeep SRT or the "next" SRT Challenger)? BTW, thank you for the SRT booklet and SRT flag!

How much torque management is reduced on the 6.4L SRT engine when ESP is FULL OFF?

Also, as you have constantly browsed the forums, us owners (Challenger specifically) are definitely going "coco puff crazy" about what SRT has in store for us. We don't need to know future product, however, all we gotta know is there anything to get excited about at the New York Auto Show for SRT owners just like the announcement of the 2014 Jeep SRT in January?

Thank you to the SRT folks for doing this. A rather 'noobish' question, please feel free to skip to answer more urgent ones....

Do you feel that the current SRT lineup has reached that happy medium of technology, availability, and price? I am specifically referring to the 'SRT pages' availability, (as well as the digital readout of additional gauges, etc) and if you are satisfied with them, or if you think more should be open to the consumer to either view, store, or even alter data.

As a soon to be new owner of a '14 Charger SRT once the order banks open (PLEASE still offer white in 2014, hah), I know that they will more than suit my wants/needs. But I imagine a good segment of folks would like more 'access' to their cars info w/out having to get a tuner to view that stuff.

Thanks again. :racing:

I had an issue with my 2012 SRT8 Charger, in which I left a usb cable plugged into the center console (with nothing on the other end). This evidetnly kept the "Interior module" powered up, and drained my battery after about 5 days . Is this normal behavior, or something that may have been overlooked, or is there an issue with my Charger.

Thank you!

This definitely shouldn't happen. The console USB port is powered directly from the radio and will remain alive all the time to allow charging while the key is off. The body controller (interior module) doesn't stay awake based on something being plugged-in or not. With nothing plugged into the other end of the USB cable there shouldn't be any power drain unless the cable is bad. I'd look for another source of power drain.

Anyway we can get more pictures of the SRT vehicles / technology / components on the DriveSRT.com website pages? Perhaps more track pictures of SRT vehicles doing awesome stuff, burnouts, etc. A good start would be to add more retro colored Challenger pictures from the core model that just got released

Thanks for participating in this discussion.

My question regards the SRT extra "goodies" that all USA purchases of SRT vehicles receive but that we Canadian SRT purchasers are do not. These include the SRT Experience passes, SRT flag and some other things. I am wondering why the Canadian SRT buyers do not get these things, especially in light that our MSRP is already 5 - 10K more than the USA sticker? And can this be rectified as I for one was quite upset by not being given the SRT Experience and instead will have to pay for it.

do you people not read the rules or what?

SRTEngineers, I have a product suggestion. With GM offering an E-Rod engine package for owners of vintage GM vehicles, I think owners of vintage Chrysler vehicles should have a similar package based on the current 6.4 Hemi, even though Mopar is working on their Street-Spec Hemi based on the 5.7 Hemi.

SRT, I have not seen official figures for the 2014 Grand Cherokee with 8-speed compared to the 2013. Can you provide factory 0-60, 0-100, and 1/4 times comparing the 2014 SRT Jeep w/8 spd to the 2013 with 5? Hopefully the 2014 isn't "Future" product since web reviews etc are already out :)

No questions here. Just wanted to say how proud I am to own an SRT. I'v had both an SRT-4 neon and SRT-8 charger. I'm 21 and i plan to drive SRT for life. And I can afford these cars from working for none other than Chrysler :) thanks!

I just have a suggestion that the next SRT branded sports/muscle (Ahhh 'Cuda...'Cuda) competes head to head with the future SVT Mustangs and ZL1's. 2015 is going to be a big year and I'd really like to see Mopar have something to offer in a direct alternative to the Mustang. Shortening the Challenger won't do it. A new all around smaller and lighter pkg with the 6.2L at 650+ hp will be what its going to take if you want to be taken seriously and get conquest sales.

And another suggestion would be to offer additional blues. Imo blue and Muscle go together. Think the old Fathom Blue in late 60's era Chevy's, or something similar to the Blue Streak Pearl you offered in 2012:

By the way, pass it along that my always-attached grin may have gotten a hair wider when I heard Ralph may be driving around daily what I drive around daily; white '12 300 SRT8.

Two more questions:

1. What SRT models do the engineers drive personally, stock or modified? Don't need details on who owns what, just curious what the staff parking lot looks like.
2. The 5spd in the '12 300 / Charger / Challenger SRT8; any issues with using the paddleshifters to downshift for engine braking regularly (while not revving sky high of course)?

1) There are all sorts of cars in our parking lot. From brand new 2014 Grand Cherokee SRT8s for the bosses to weekend warrior race cars for the engineers. A hand full of SRT4's and a bunch of trucks and Jeeps to haul and go offroad. We have and do it all!
2) There is no risk to using the Paddle shifts for every shift the car will ever make. It will not allow you to command a downshift that will generate and rpm out of range, so nothing to worry about.

Just like iPhone & Android, people have become accustomed to getting software updates to fix quirks and add features. Since Uconnect is now more of a technology platform as opposed to a "radio", will there be any chance of getting updates to the platform? (Primarily the UConnect 8.4 systems?) Even the Gracenotes DB is out of date by about 2 years on new vehicles.

Thanks for holding another chat session and taking some time with the customers.
My question is regarding the getrag differentials in the 09+ srt8 manual challengers. There have been numerous complaints on the various forums about the whining and howling noise coming from these after only a few thousand miles on these. I know about the tsb about adding the dampeners to the rear but only a few people have reported any improvement at all. The only way they are getting fixed is with an entire rear end replacement, if the dealer will do it. My question is have the replacement rear ends been "beefed up" at all since 09? I dont want to replace it if it is just going to go bad again in a few thousand miles. Thanks in advance and i appreciate your time. Keep up the good work!

The Getrag axle did a good job of improving strength and adding a much needed mechanical LSD, but it has not been totally free of gear whine complaints. I don't know of a high performance car that has manage to avoid that particular issue completely. The dampers do provide an improvement, but once you're is tuned in to the frequency it's difficult to not notice it every time you drive. Giving the axle a good break-in will make a big differnce.

There have been continuous imporvements in the gear mesh accuracy that have all made small improvements over the years since it's introduction in '09. The latest batch is certainly tougher and quiter that the first ones, but as a whole there is not a huge difference.

Hello SRT8 Team,

I have now owned three SRT8's; 2007 Charger SRT8, 2009 Challenger SRT8 (Hemi Orange-of course) and now a 2012 Redline Red Charger SRT8 6.4, all great vehicles-but I think with the 6.4 you almost hit the "mark". I am stationed in Germany and I have driven all of the SRT8's as if I stole them (actually deployment $ helped). Being stationed in Germany affords me the opportunity, that most owners of the SRT vehicles in the US do not enjoy, driving the vehicle to its full potential LEGALLY. With the Charger and Challenger 6.1 I was able to get a top speed of approx. 282 KM/H or 176 MPH (all with CAI and Corsa Cat-backs) with no problems. The 2007 Charger was kind of soft in the suspension when I hit long sweeping turns at high speeds, it felt as if I would start to "float" out of the turn-with, the 2009 Challenger that was different, the car took those curves like it was on rails. The 2012 Charger SRT8 also has a great suspension-much better than the 2007. Now here are my observations on the 2012 Charger SRT8 (with all the good comes some bad) , it is not as quick off of the mark/responsive as the 6.1 Challenger (2 extra doors?), there is a very loud whistling noise coming from the front end (the new configuration of the hood?) at about 160-165MP/H, with the CAI and Corsa Cat-backs, the CEL comes on whenever I hit red-line. The CEL goes off after driving "normally" for a day or two. Now here are my questions to the SRT8 Team:
Has the 6.4 undergone a long-term high speed stress tests (in excess of 170mp/h) and what were the results (engine analysis-should I be worried driving on the Autobahn for extended periods at that speed),
has the CEL issue been fixed when using a cat-back exhaust (Corsa),
Can I use tuners that are now available for the 6.4, within moderate parameters, to safely increase the performance of the 6.4- I feel that the engine has the potential of delivering a lot more performance but is severely hampered by it's built-in HAL.
I want to thank all of you guys on the team for developing a well-built muscle car that just pisses off the Europeans that spend almost twice as much for half of the performance and build and is so much fun to drive!

Thanks for the support and your service!!!!

With regards to high speed engine testing, yes, we thrash these engines at constant high rpm using an engine dyno. Tests can last between 500-1000hrs depending on the test and obviously must pass without failures. You honestly don't have anything to worry about driving at those speeds. Do you know what CEL comes up...ever had a scan report of your car?

With respect to tuning, there honestly isn't much left in the engine without adding some hardware to it. That being said, the sky is the limit if you spend a few dollars and get a tuner who knows hemi's...

We package the largest tires that fit without them touching the fender, framerail or wheel liners through full suspension travel and full turns. We also have to meet regulatory compliance of tire fender coverage of 30 degrees forward and 60 degrees rearward of the front and rear spindles. Wider tires on the Challenger would mean reduced turning, reduced suspension jounce travel and wheel flares.
