SRT Engineers Round Table Discussion

Wednesday, Sept 21st 5pm - 7pm ET

The ground rules:
  • First off, the SRT Engineers take time out of their busy schedule making go fast goodies to be here to answer our questions. Let's show them the proper courtesy and patience. There will be many questions and they may not be able to answer every question asked. If your question is skipped, please be patient as questions are not answered in order.
  • Please only ask one or two questions. There are lots of people who want to ask questions, so let's give everyone a chance.
  • Stay on the topic at hand. SRT Vehicles! Keep the off-topic chat to the other sections of the website. There is to be no discussion between members in this forum. Ask your question and enjoy the replies from the Engineers!
  • If your question has already been asked (by you or someone else). Don't re-post it in hopes to get it answered quicker.
  • Make sure you let the SRT Engineers know what model SRT vehicle you are driving or inquiring about. Yes, a head gasket is quite different between an SRT8 and an SRT4.
  • As much as everyone is salivating over what comes in the future, the SRT Engineers cannot answer any questions regarding future product.

JOn at diablo/ AMP

are there going to be any advancements to the pcv system on the hemi's especially since you guys are going to put out a supercharged 392. are there any possible ideas as to ventalating crank case pressures. IE for blown or boosted cars where it becomes a problem with oil seepege ect.
Thanks for asking. We are always looking at what we want to do next, but don't have anything to announce right now.

2009 6 Speed Challenger Arrington forged 6.0L stroker Magnuson blower

I've noticed in my data logs from the drag strip that my car is losing an exorbitant amount of timing after I shift gears and it takes 1.5 - 2 seconds to start to recover. I'm talking single digit timing after a shift here and it's killing the 6 speed's ability to perform on the track as compared to the auto.

This isn't isolated to just my car, every 6 speed data log I've seen is doing the same thing.

Can you give some insight on why this is occurring on only the 6 speed cars and not the autos? Is it torque mgmt or something else and can you give any insight on how to defeat it? The car is in dyno mode, which I thought defeated all torque mgmt?

Auto cars with similar mods are running .5 - .7 better ETs and I believe this has a lot to do with it.

Here's a screen capture of a data log showing the issue. Note the car dropped to 4.5 degrees of timing after a shift and I'm at WOT. Green line is actual spark cyl 1 pid, purple is throttle blade position, and brown is MAP. The highlighted area of the log is the 2-3 shift point showing 4.5 degrees of actual timing. Car has ZERO KR.

That's the MILLION dollar question right there!!! :beerchug:
It think everyone is waiting to hear that answer... and do the 2011/12's react the same way.

Is there a stop-lock setting in the TCM that stops the converter from locking and if so at what stall rpm does it stop the converter from locking.

Is there any way around this besides getting a tighter Converter

Thank You

Would love to know if there is a possibility of the SRT team taking on the new Durango. Deploying soon, will be buying a R/T Durango. But, if there is a chance a SRT8 version count me in.
Thanks! We appreciate your enthusiasm. We can't talk about products that may or may not come out in the future but when we have news to announce you guys will be among the first to know.

HEMI 6.4L engine related questions:
1- What are the intake & exhaust ports sizes?
2- Why did you space the throttle body away from the intake manifold, when the 5.7L and 6.1L have their throttle body right next to the intake manifold?
3- Will the GC SRT suspensions and brakes fit into the Durango R/T?

HEMI 6.4L engine related questions:
1- What are the intake & exhaust ports sizes? I: 54mm, E: 42mm
2- Why did you space the throttle body away from the intake manifold, when the 5.7L and 6.1L have their throttle body right next to the intake manifold? Mostly packaging to give us the plenum entry we desired. With the triangle at the top of the front cover being so close, this was our only option. At SRT, we care about airflow :)
3- Will the GC SRT suspensions and brakes fit into the Durango R/T? Yes, if you by everything...springs, shocks, knuckles, controls arms, brakes, and ABS controller...

Engineering and Design question:

I found that my Chrysler 300 has 2 different headlights.

The Owner's manual says for a 2007 that i should have BOTH Outer and Inner Park Lamps (194NA's)

The Passenger side doesn't even have wiring going to the back of the headlamp assembly, nor does it have a provisioning for the outer light to be affixed to he assembly. (no holes)

In which year did they switch from using a single dual function bulb for both turn and park light functions to having that plus Outer Park lamps in the Headlight Assembly?

I figured that since the SRT team works so closely with the Chrysler products and has access to info that we may not, that they may be able to shed some light on this unique situation.

I'm aware that having been a Budget Rental car before I got it, it may have sustained F.E. damage, and Ebay is plentiful with salvage parts.

I Simply want to know where the difference in years occurred and if you have any part #'s handy they would be greatly appreciated. This is for a 2007 300 Touring.

Thanks and keep making bad-a$$ vehicles!

(I think a 20" reproduction of American Racing/KMC's Nova Machined/Black 5 spoke would be awesome with an SRT touch)

^^^clearly not an SRT question. GO TO YOUR DEALER!! Or search on the forum. This is specifically for SRT vehicle questions.

Mopar Parts:
1- will the 3.91 axle from the '011 Mopar Charger fit into the 2012 SRT8's?

2- When is the 2012 Performance catalog coming out?
3- I know you don't talk about future productions, but give us just a hint:
Is there a chance we would see the parts of the Redline concept & Kurt Busch being offered for the rest of Charger owners?

car: 2010 SRT8 challenger 6-spd w/mopar coilovers & mopar sway bars.

question: on aggressive cornering maneuvers the car exhibits post-apex steering effort increase (almost like lack of power assit) while unwinding steering angle/wheel. Increased effort is also accompanied by a type of grunt/low freq. short duration hum/sound. normal steering effort returns just before steering wheel & wheels are straight again. no understeer/oversteer present - (i.e. @ corner-speeds below threshold of tire adhesion).

i've heard there may be some type of check valve that is closing in the rack.. does such a device exist in this design? Any ideas what may be causing this condition?

BTW: we're extreamly proud of all your efforts and results this past week in Germany (Viper ACR smashing ring record) and in Canada (Targa Newfoundland)!!! GEAT JOB - KEEP IT UP!!

I would replace the pump. Sounds like it is weak and not handling the extra load.

Two suggestions:
1. for the Challenger, allow the rear seat headrests to fold down out of the way to improve visibility. Many of us never have back seat passengers and this would be a great feature. This would also allow the front seats to be moved back further when the rear seats backs are folded down when hauling something larger in the trunk.
2. Charger SRT8 - offer all-wheel-drive (AWD) like Porsche does on the 911 but don't raise the ride height like you do on the Charger R/T

Thanks, Rob

We built one AWD 300C SRT8 mule and it was slower than the RWD car due to the extra weight and interia. The traction advantage couldn't make it back up.

Some of us rwd guys at SRT joke with the awd guys at SRT that awd is just an expensive solution to having the wrong tire on your car.

Can you offer some insight as to why the exterior colors change so often and why some of the most popular colors are not offered any more in the Challenger SRT8 or is this a marketing question:

hemi-orange, torred, detonator yellow, b5 blue, plum crazy, etc.
It's more of a marketing question, but we will give you an answer anyway:banana:

The colors you specified were brought out in limited production as a throw back to the colors of our muscle cars in the 60s and 70s. SRT vehicles are exclusive to begin with, but with special, limited run colors, you get a little more collectability and exclusivity.

Hi guys,

I have been data logging my 2011 SRT Challenger (automatic transmission) and noticed that between shifts the throttle position drop s by 5% to 8%, and quite a bit of timing is pulled even with the traction control in full defeat position. Is there a way to eliminate that from occurring?

Thanks

#84 ·
The 2011 Challenger ATX has some ridiculously fast shift times...200ms range. The trans has never been asked to shift so fast and also handle the torque of the 392 HEMI...so in order to keep the trans happy shifting that fast, we have to pull a considerable amount of torque.

SRT version of GM's E-Rod Crate Engine?

I don't know if you have knowledge of this, but GM Performance offers a version of an LS3 engine which they call the E-Rod Crate Engine, which can be used in vintage cars, yet be fully emissions legal.

I was thinking ... what if Chrysler could offer a similar engine to those who want SRT technology in their hot rods, yet need an engine to pass emissions tests?

Launching any of the 2012 LX SRT cars

Can you specify, from experience, what the best conditions are to run any of the 2012 LX SRT cars at the drag strip? I'm interested to know things like optimal outside temperature, tire pressure, where to rev the engine to before leaving the tree, etc.

And, in a Challenger with the 6 speed, should you just go from a dead stop? Or bring the revs to a certain range and dump the clutch? ESP on, off, or full off?

What has given you the best results?

It really depends on conditions and traction. You need to experiment. Sometimes a brief brake torque to 1200 then go works well if there is enough grip. Don't brake torque it harder and stall the torque converter or the controller will reduce torque to not go over the trans torque limit. Otherwise, experiment with flat punching or squeezing depending on grip.

On manuals, I prefer riding the clutch quite heavily from 3000-4000 rpm depending on grip. That is pretty hard on the clutch, though.

At the end of the live chat with you guys and Ralph, you posted a final comment acknowledging that the tcms and the locked 2011+ models im general are an issue amongst customers and were going to work on it. Has any discussion taken place or any steps at all really? There are a ton of us with pre 10's wanting to raise shifts to whatever we please and owners of 10+ models that cant do anything at all. Last i checked a predator canned tune wont blow us up. A dealer or flash option from certified flashers (not you cam ;) ) would be awesome! Believe it or, there are a bunch of us that will spend money on that option and some of us that have brand new $50,000 cars that we want to cut up, tune and run 10's with. We know what the 392 engine is able to do before the new ones have been released. Help us out! Let us continue to enjoy our cars the way we want and make the mothership proud of what they have built! Flash, unlock and no warranty. Were on our own, same as Nissan with the skyline. Again, thank you guys for everything!

x2...SRT engineers... I'm wondering why these new 392's can't be completely unlocked to enjoy all the aftermarket performance benefits like the GM and Ford boys get to do?? New 5.0 Mustangs had tuning out before they hit showrooms and our new 392 boys can't even tune their cars...What's the reasoning behind this and will they be unlocked? A large part of the aftermarket companies rely on making parts that allow us to adjust airflow and make more power in our cars...Unlocking the PCM's would help them out a lot. Thanks :thumbs_u:
