SRT Engineers Round Table Discussion, Part II

Wednesday, December 2nd 6pm - 8pm

The ground rules:

  • First off, the SRT Engineers take time out of their busy schedule making go fast goodies to be here to answer our questions. Let's show them the proper courtesy and patience. There will be many questions and they may not be able to answer every question asked. If your question is skipped, please be patient as questions are not answered in order.
  • Please only ask one or two questions. There are lots of people who want to ask questions, so let's give everyone a chance.
  • Stay on the topic at hand. SRT Vehicles! Keep the off-topic chat to the other sections of the website. There is to be no discussion between members in this forum. Ask your question and enjoy the replies from the Engineers!
  • If your question has already been asked (by you or someone else). Don't re-post it in hopes to get it answered quicker.
  • Make sure you let the SRT Engineers know what model SRT vehicle you are driving or inquiring about. Yes, a head gasket is quite different between an SRT8 and an SRT4.
  • As much as everyone is salivating over what comes in the future, the SRT Engineers cannot answer any questions regarding future product.
This thread is now open so you can start posting your questions.

Thanks for taking the time to come on here and talk to us all again. As talked about before with the viper transformation kits, When you say what parts or types of stuff would you be interested in as far as the conversion kit goes, Why not all? If Mopar could make a complete kit or like a stage 1,2,3. 1 being basic computer wiring and essentials for people who say already have a viper motor and tranny and they are ready to get that bad boy in there LX model car but they just dont know what the hell to do when it comes down to " how am i actually going to get this thing going". Then 2 maybe being the wiring some random drivetrain parts and the mounts needed to make it a comfortable fit not some custom cob job like we would probably have to do. Then 3 being the whole show of everything. Just an idea or a thought. It may be a 20K$ conversion if not more, i dont really know off the top of my head but there is people out there for sure who would be into doing it for sure and i dont think just one or too. there's some crazy mopar heads out there that have a big check book and and when that mind wanders you know what can happen. A parts list or an order list of you know, what can be orderd and a complete kit of what you'll need would work best in my opinion. People could have most of it and just need a few things but not the whole set up but yes there is an interest amongst the people for sure who have seen some of the cars on ebay or around online that people have crammed the viper engine into and then who have seen your challenger.

Any chance you guys will maybe come back to the LX nationals again this coming year? It was really cool that you all took your own time to come out with the cars and talk and just go over anything within reason and that you wouldnt get fired for. The whole 3 hour talk that you guys had about everything from injectors to new tuning and what companies like diablosport and even down to the bolts for the getrag rear end. Very awesome of you to do that and would be great to see you all again.

We all know you can't comment on future products But just saying it would be great to see another super bee, it would be great to have the 6.4 come out for the srt's. A nice 500 horsepower killer would be great. Im sure you saw the dogging all us mopar guys took with the car and drive tests where they had the gt500 and camaro ss vs. the r/t challenger than the other one with all the cars with F.I applications on it. Would be great for mopar to release a killer 6.4 forged bottom end and just be able to slam everyone into submission, Even though for most what we have available now isn't to hard of a thing to do.

last real question and not statement like above. How many of you lurk the forums and dont tell us?!?!

Thanks for everything keep up the great work!

Thanks for the feedback on the Viper stuff. We are planning on going to the LX Nationals again next year! As for your forums questions, we'll never tell :Na_Na_Na_Na:

As you know, the GC SRT8 is in its 5th model year... in looking back, how does Chrysler upper management feel about the release of this model - has it been really "worthwhile" and considered a "success"?

And, can you say yet whether or not 2010 will be the last model year? Do we need to run out and buy the last ones?

#103 ·
Well I am not Upper Management, but I feel that the car was VERY worthwhile and is a GREAT success!!!!! One of the best SRT8's around, and personally my favorite!

WE CAN NOT COMMENT ON FUTURE PRODUCTS....but again WE NEVER SAY NEVER!!!!

First thanks for making my 35 year dream come true. This is the best car this 54 year old veteran has ever owned.

I live in an area of the country where summer time temps hit 110 to 120 on a daily basis. I've noticed my EVIC temp hit as high as 230 during normal driving. Is this acceptable?

I see you must be using the engineering pages. 230 is not a problem.

Hi SRTEngineers..... Jeep SRT8 owner here. I was wondering what the optimal timing of the 6.1L is? I've heard that 27* is it from someone who heard it from you guys. Any truth to this? I don't care about warranty because I'm out of it. Just want to know for my tuning purposes. Thanks guys!

#107 ·
Well as to corner weight the reason i asked w/o drive is well that varies a lot :) Just wanted to get an idea if you knew what the number would be. I have a road event in March and I'll be on scales before that event to tweak some stuff with the KW's and alignments.

-R

PS - I sent an email to Lindsey about the event :D

We got your invite this afternoon. We'll see if we can come.

When you adjust your ride heights and corner weights, make sure to have your swaybars disconnected, or they'll fight you. Make sure the corner weights don't change much when you bolt them back up. If they do, you need to have one swaybar end link be a turnbuckle to adjust the length to make sure you don't preload the bar. The corner weights don't have to be perfect. 50-60 lbs is plenty close enough.

The SRT Vision

SRT creates some of the Chrysler Group's boldest, most distinctive products by single-mindedly following its core vision: Deliver benchmark performance at an affordable price, and deliver it with absolute integrity and credibility.

Every SRT vehicle showcases five key aspects:
Exterior styling that resonates with the brand image
Race-inspired interiors
World-Class ride and handling
Benchmark braking
Standout powertrain

The above statement is a quote taken from the SRT team manual.

Why doesn't my SRT8 live up to the SRT Vision standards? Chrysler Motors Corporation flashed the CPU on my vehicle and cut the performance with each flash. All I am looking for is the original flash to return the performance to what it was when new. The integrity and credibility is a false statement at this time. What can be done to restore confidence in the product?

I have 2 sets of wheels/tires (winter/summer) for my '08 Charger SRT, all the wheels are OEM, stamped "SRT" and "ALCOA FORGED". I bought 4 additional TPM sensors from a dealer, (68001698AB for '08) and they seem to communicate with the receivers, except that at any given time, I will typically see 2, 3 or often all 4 tires showing the same pressure. This happens with both the summer and winter set. The actual pressures do vary a bit by a manual gauge, so apparently 1 sensor is displaying on all 4 fields of the readout. The dealer service people want to put their scanner on it for $100 each spring and fall, when I change wheels, but it strikes me as a warranty issue. I've asked friends at Brampton Assembly about it, all they can say is, "it shouldn't do that"
Any thoughts? Thanks.

The sensors transmit a unique ID number along with the pressure information. Once the module learns the new set of sensors (you need to drive it over 20mph to make sure it transmits) and the location it will update only the one location. The module won't accept the same ID number for two locations.

The sensors are +/- 1.0 psi 1.5 psi at extreme temps and the guage in your hand is +/- 1 psi at best so it is very possible that all the sensors will read the same while the guage says they are slightly different.

I have a 2007 GCSRT8 like I have said earlier...... during slow speeds(30mph and slower) I am getting a drivetrain clunk during downshifts. It does it in D and Autostick. There are MANY of us having this issue over on the Jeep site. Have any of you guys heard of this issue or any suggestion? I know my usual stop sign it does it at, if I pop it into N to stop at it there is no noise so it is something in the driveline. Like I said, there are about 20 of us having this issue and some dealers have told others it's "NORMAL"!!! I just don't buy it. PLEASE any thoughts?

So what you are telling me is that I have to go to Montana, South Dakota, North Dakota or wherever there is an open road bring the vehicle to limit, 173 mph, and the vehicle will perform like it did with the original software! This makes no sense to me. The software, complex as it is, has no reality with adaptive software. Fuel feed is controlled by software. Individuals I have spoken with that had no flashes done to the CPU do not have the issues I am dealing with. I am looking for the original feel, I.E. You felt the engine / vehicle pull strong all the way through 5th gear. With each gear change you felt the power as you were pushed back in the seat. Each shift from 2nd to 3rd, 3rd to 4th and 4th to 5th felt strong. Doing 80MPH and flooring the gas pedal gave immediate response, a 5th to 3rd downshift that put you back in the seat and unleashed its power to the asphalt.

this is in response to an earlier note
Is there a way to reset the ECU / PCM to the original factory settings, pre April 2006? It appears that the many times that Chrysler has flashed the ECU on the SRT8 the software has dumbed down the performance, taken away the slap-stick functionality and removed the slippage quotient of the rear end and added an adapttive mode.

just a modifier to state original question.

Are there any hidden EVIC screens for the GCSRT8's like there is for the LX's? Apparently if you hold down the Compass and Music note steering wheel buttons for 7 seconds, there's some additional EVIC screens.

#6 - Current Speed/RPMs/Temp/Volts. Self explanatory.

#8 - Compass Raw/Oil Pressure/Pedal Position. Self explanatory.

#9 - MinL/Min R.

how about a computer that we can plug in for track use and remove for every day driving. something that can be hooked to a laptop to ajust at the track ,one that has no limp mode and doesnt stop u from doing what we want like shift points rear end changes timing set fuel set ect something that doesnt throw codes every time we ajust something , that or a duel chanel computer one that we can flip the switch for track mode?????

That can be done if you want to give up your warranty. We give you as much performance as we can and still meet durability, emissions, and big brother restraints we must conform to.

While this isn't an SRT question is is a general question about power train.

While in Europe they get the I think its a 3.0l CRD, and as I recall that engine was put into the Jeep's, is there and over arching reason of not offering the CRD in some of the other car lines ? I would figure the tq from that would make for a solid power plant for these heavier cars.

SRT8 Differential

Hello,
First I would like to commend you on the cars we drive!
I do need help however on the Differential. If I am going to throw any kind of power to the asphalt, what is my next best option (short of breaking half-shafts w/the standard 07 MSRT8)??
I am looking @ the LSD Getrag ........will it hold up?
Do I need to step up to a Dana?
Let me know your thoughts?

We are only talking about 550 RWHP.:racing:

Thanks

The Getrag diff seems to be holding up pretty well in modified cars from what I've seen, but honestly some of the guys on this forum would be in a better position to comment.

I want to thank the SRT Engineering team for their time and straight forward answers. This applies especially to your statements of 'regulatory' and 'big brother restraints'. I believe you to be one of the more honest engineers in giving a response. We do not like to hear these things but need to even though we do not like it.

I'm coming out of my coding-cave to say thanks for coming to LXForums. You guys truly are an inspiration to everyone here and I can speak for everyone when I say you are truly appreciated.

Thanks for the work you do and the time you give the community!
Thanks to you guys too! We always have a ton of fun doing these...the pizza isn't too shabby either :thumbs_u:
