SRT Engineers Round Table Discussion

Wednesday, August 5th 6pm - 8pm

The ground rules:

  • First off, the SRT Engineers take time out of their busy schedule making go fast goodies to be here to answer our questions. Let's show them the proper courtesy and patience. There will be many questions and they may not be able to answer every question asked. If your question is skipped, please be patient as questions are not answered in order.
  • Please only ask one or two questions. There are lots of people who want to ask questions, so let's give everyone a chance.
  • Stay on the topic at hand. SRT Vehicles! Keep the off-topic chat to the other sections of the website. There is to be no discussion between members in this forum. Ask your question and enjoy the replies from the Engineers!
  • If your question has already been asked (by you or someone else). Don't re-post it in hopes to get it answered quicker.
  • Make sure you let the SRT Engineers know what model SRT vehicle you are driving or inquiring about. Yes, a head gasket is quite different between an SRT8 and an SRT4. ;)
  • As much as everyone is salivating over what comes in the future, the SRT Engineers cannot answer any questions regarding future product. This INCLUDES 2010 line products.

This thread is now open so you can start posting your questions.

many srt8 owners use the diablo tuners to get max performance, my question is:1) will use of this tuner void my warranty? i'd like to buy one but i'm afraid of screwing up my pcm and my warranty. 2) if they work so well , why doesn't chrysler just tune the pcm's for max performance? (like the diablo)

Thanks for being here for us!

I have heard of several '09 Challenger SRT's using excessive amounts of oil early on after taking delivery.(less than 3000 miles) Mine, for example, used about 1 1/2 quarts for the first 1100 miles. Is this something that will correct itself with a few more miles on the clock? And, also several owners have expressed concern about a blue puff of smoke from the exhaust upon startup of an already warmed up engine. Is this a problem, could you explain both answers please?

Thank you again!

New engines take some time for the piston rings (sometimes seals as well) to break in. As ring tensions have reduced and bore finishes have improved (read smoother) the rings will take longer to seal to the mating surface. In some rare cases, if an engine is run very hard right out of the chute you will get some glazing between the bores and rings which will cause an even longer (or potentially never) break in period. Normal conditions will break in and seal up well within several thousand miles. Make a few hard runs with the car after break in will ususally accelerate the sealing. Some light smoke from the exhaust on start ups (usually cold or warm after sitting for a time) is not an issue. If the smoke is heavy or continuous during driving there may be a mechanical problem, take it to the dealer.

First of all, hats off to you! These cars are fantastic! Great job guys! Absolutely love them!

There is a concern however maybe you could address. To date, we've had three different 6.1 SRT Challengers lose the Key Fob recognition and fail to start. One had to be towed to the dealership, and one dealership said there is no TSB, no recalls or communications of any kind regarding this from Chrysler. Not quite happy with this response, we went to another dealership where they said they found an intermittent problem and are now replacing one of the controllers. Is this going to be an issue in the future? Are the cars going to be recalled for this? Sort of unerving, worrying if the car will recognize the key fob in the middle of nowhere.

Thanks again for taking the time to answer some questions for us.

Regards,

Ken

We appreciate your involvement here on the forums, thank you!

SRT engineers have put forth various reasons as to why this cross brace exists in this location:

http://i441.photobucket.com/albums/qq139/LetItAllPass/IMG_0550.jpg

They include:

- to support the exhaust during factory assembly
- general body stiffness enhancement
- control support during front/rear impacts (serious crash event)

Can we get a definitive answer(s)? Thanks!

It has been suggested that the 09' SRT model year has significant changes to TCM code which detunes the level of performance compared to previous model years.

It also appears that the 06' (and earlier) platforms perform better than the 07' (and later) platforms in the same area (off the line - significant timing pulled immediately after tip-in/WOT). We are observing these parameter changes during datalogging...

Care to confirm/deny? Thanks!

As far as the 09 TCM code - there were no changes for the SRT8.

SRT Exhaust

What areas on the SRT exhaust need the most attention to increase the performance of the total system, and what modifications specifically should be done to those areas?
Resonators, suitecase, cats, x-pipe, pipe dia. etc??? Brake down for each, specifics!!!!

Thanks BTW you created a great line of cars, keep up the great work.....

The cats are the biggest cork.....

The suitcase and the rear resonators are both "straight thru" so there really isn't much there. The pipes get squeezed down going in and out of both the suitcase and the rears, I believe the rears go to 2.25". That's a small cork, but not much. X-pipe reduces backpressure by approx. 1" (Total system is about 10") leave it in. 2.75" pipe is plenty big.

Hope that helps

Are all SRT8 intake manifolds interchangeable between models and year of manufacturer. For example, with the manifold from a 2009 Challenger SRT8 fit on a 2007 Charger SRT8? There appears to be some confusion regarding this interchangeability.
Thanks for coming to answer these and other questions. You all manufactured a tremendous ride so I got two of them as described previously in the example!

I have been wondering what is next for the Viper V-10 Motor. Heard that production of the Viper has stopped and with all the R&I money spent in the new 8.4L motor will there be any other uses? What about the V-10 cahllenger concept? Any further improvements or progress on this? And fianlly what were the production numbers on the 2006 Dodge Ram SRT-10 Reg Cab Trucks? Can't find naything on this.

- Well the Viper is alive and well... Conner was the first plant to restart after the 3 month shutdown.

- Can't talk about future products.....

- Sorry we don't have that information available to us.

Thanks again for the opportunity to chat. I have an '06 Dodge Charger SRT, built in October of '05. It has just over 44k miles on it. I don't go offroading. For the past year, I've observed what sounds like brake squeal (like when you have excess dust) when I accellerate. I know its not the brakes, as I'm not using them, but I'm worried that it may be a suspension issue as it only seems to happen under noticeable weight transfer (front to back). Is there a known issue?

First off, thanks for coming to the forums, and looking forward to you returning to the Advisory board.

My question is about something I have been working on for a couple years. I have been trying to get to work is a Viper Motor in my 05 Magnum. I have been driving myself and a few folks crazy due to I want everything to work properly, as if it was from the factory. I had asked about this back at the '08 Spring Festival. I got the response of 'It didn't pass front crash tests.' Now I have been told that there is a possibility of a 'swap in' kit.

Could you shed some light on how to do the electronics so everything is happy?
And if there is a 'swap in' kit available?

Thanks,
Rusty

Is the belly pan on the SRT8 for aerodynamics only or does it serve some other purpose? Mine blew out at the end of a drag strip because I removed the brake ducts in the front bumper for better cooling and presumably the pressure built up inside the engine compartment.

The SRT belly pan is a multi-function component, it houses the brake ducts, helps seal the front end to assist in engine cooling and manages the air flow going under the car. Removing it or any of its components will adversely affect the car performance.

I know the production number question regarding various SRT vehicles keeps coming up. Why is this information unavailable when so many people seem to want it?

I heard something alluded to a while ago that this was proprietary information that for some reason the competitors could use. Is this true? If so, how could this seemingly benign information be used to harm Chrysler?

Suspension Links on Rear End (Aluminum) - Failure

The collision shop that I work at recently repaired a 06 Charger R/T that had rear suspension damage. The OE replacement compresion link that we received looked identical but was steel instead of aluminum. I'm assuming the tension and camber links have been updated also. Has there been a problem with these links wearing out or breaking? Do the SRT8 LX cars have this same problem. I inspect my links and they look identical to the R/T (except, from what I hear, the bushings are Heavy Duty). Should SRT8 owner expect any problems. These links are very expense and cost around $1025 list per side (parts only) + 5.5 hours overhaul per side.

Thank you for any information you are able to provide.

Factory sleeper?

I am impressed with all of the new MOPAR Hemi cars, and the proud owner of a Magnum, but cost seems to be a limiting factor for a lot of folks.

Have you considered a "Road Runner like" Challenger or Charger; big motor but no power windows, power seats, sun roof or other frills, to cut cost and weight?

It would seem in this economy that a car enthusiast, the market the Challenger is aimed at, would jump at a bare bones go fast car like the Challenger.

Just wondering.

Just bought my 09 Super Bee... love it.

This may have been asked in a previous session that I have missed, but do you have an opinion on the catch cans that so many of us are running on our cars to catch the oil vapors from the crankcase ventilation before they go to the throttle body?

thank u for being here period.

1) are srt models currently in production from only past orders from a certain cut off date or has production halted for new orders?
2) what is the largest liter engine you have tested thus far in an lx that may or may not have made it to production?

thanks in advance... an srt will be my next purchase. please take this back to your superiors: like shelby puts super snake packages on their mustang gt500 cobras, an upgrade package would be well accepted on an srt model where we would ship it back to the factory and have it added...

first i wish to thank you, to give us some time .....apreciated

1) is the SRT8 6.1L camshaft installed retarded ? there is so many arguments about this on the forum ...

2) if possible would you know the compression ratio created by installing SRT8 6.1L heads on a 5.7L
thanks

Cam timing

All 6.1L camshafts are installed in an advanced position in production. As for the 6.1 head / 5.7 block compression result, I have no idea.

Hi, I'd like to thank you all for spending some of your valuable time with us, (your presence and enthusiasm is deeply appreciated)

I'm just wondering if there is any testing databases that you can share with us?
anything at all, if the limits in any one field have been reached, we'd like to know, so other fields
can be pursued.

Thanks for your time.
Cheers

My question is more related to customer service. I purchased my Caliber SRT-4 back in the last day of May. I got a killer deal on it since the dealership that owned it was being forced out. Anyway took delivery and drove it on the freeway the first time and it was shaking like crazy. Took to a different dealer that just happened to be close to where I was. They said it had flat spots and to drive like 800 miles and they should work out. I drove it about 1500 miles no difference. After this time the dealer I bought the car from is now out of business so now I have no recourse with them. I took to another dealer by my house they confirmed the flat spots and said it was because of dealer neglect letting the air drain and not moving the car on the lot enough. Long story short they balanced the tires but the vibration is there still, enough where it feels unsafe to drive over 70. So I now have an open reference number with Chrysler customer service to see if they would take care of the tires under warranty but the rep I spoke with didn't instill much hope that they would take care of this. I know how this is going to work out they are going to say take it up with the dealer who has now filed for bankruptcy. I won't see a damn thing. I don't know I just feel a bit shafted I currently own and operate 3 SRT vehicles 1 05 SRT4 1 08 SRT4 and 1 05 SRT8 300. I also have a 97 ACR Neon and have owned in the past an 04 SRT4 before it was wrecked. I am obviously an extremely loyal customer. Is there anything you guys can suggest I do to help get this pushed through? 18819811 is my reference number if it helps at all and you may email me at mark at macmatters.com if you don't want to post to the public forum.

BTW this is my company car so I got her wrapped the following has links if you guys care to see them.

Very sorry to hear this. Your going about doing the right thing with the customer service folk. I would keep pushing them hard and try not to take no for an answer.

Thanks for being a loyal customer.

Knock Sensors - Fidelity versus Accuracy;

Given the torque specification accuracy requirements, varying specifications of the knock-sensing device itself from batch to batch (tolerances - manufacturing/operational envelope), it appears similar vehicles operating under similar conditions/circumstances can consistently demonstrate significant differences in ST knock retard values.

When these devices were swapped from a vehicle which demonstrated excessive ST knock to another with significantly less, the anomaly followed the knock sensors (and vice-versa).

How critical is the torque spec, and your collective experiences/insight regarding these devices on the 5.7/6.1 line-up. Thanks!

As the others have said, thank you for taking the time out to stop by our little corner of the internet and answer some of our questions - That really says a lot about how you view your clients!!!!

My question is this: I know that a lot of the decisions made by "Daimler" were not necessarily popular with the rest of "Chrysler" while they were running the show. Now that their reign of terror has passed, what are the chances that the iron curtain will fall from around the car's coding? Specifically, now that the PCM has been cracked and is (sort of) widely understood, we're still left with no great solution for the TCM. We now have the Mustang and the Camaro up and running - the American Muscle wars have indeed been rekindled. In order for the Challenger to be a competitor - and keep the egg from Dodge's face - I should think that some kind of trans tuning HAS TO become a possibility. Any chance of finally seeing cooperation from the factory on tuning these cars?
