Catch can?

What does the catch can really do anyway? Horsepower? General performance? Someone let me know please

It helps greatly reduce the amount of oil that is put through the intake from the PCV system. Without it, the back of your throttle body and the inside of your intake manifold will get caked with oil and crap. You will not gain any HP from it but it will help keep things clean and allow air to flow like it should.

The catch can?

It's an aftermarket part, so if you havn't bought it, then you don't need to worry about removing it.

If you are talking about the PCV, then you can't just remove it, or you will have oil squirting out all over your engine bay (I assume).

If only you asked yesturday as I emptied a full one!

here ya go...and this is what it collected after only a week and a half!..i dont know y i waited almost 2 years to get one :blam: .. thanks BT!!

p.s. please excuse the dirty underhood mess!

thanks for the pics guys. so its catching oil???? im new to the srt8 charger so excuse me if i sound dumb. my car is like three weeks old will it void the warranty?

Com'n guys, engine longevity is not increased with a "clean" throttle body, nor by removing oil vapor, and there is no performance increase...

I've read what 1FAST4DR pointed to within Diablo forums, does not change my mind :^)

There are other causes for artificial activation of the knock retard sensor. Again, the amount of sustained oil required to adversely affect octane levels...would drain the pan long before the next oil change was due.

If you are aware of other threads, I'll read them...

if you were referring to my post, i apologize, i did not mean to imply it will gain performance by itself, however, IMO a nice clean engine WITH performance gaining mods(exhaust,sc,nitrous, etc) IMO will perform better than a sludged up vehicle WITH performance gaining mods, which in result will gain longevity, again IMO

#19 ·
Yes, that has been eluded to in a few threads :^)

The issue is whether indeed it is the oil vapor, or something else pulling timing.

#20 ·
Well if oil vapor has been proven to cause the pulling of timing, why not put one on to remove that factor and then see what else may possibly pulling it as well.

longevity may come into play and on the perormance end, less PCV gases (ie oil) back into the intake = less knock. Less knock=better timing/performance. I'm convinced of it. Who knows, until a mod face off is done(maybe one already has, sorry for my ignorance if so), the jury may still be out.

#70 ·
???? oil vapor and Knocking really confused here....engine knock/pinging is a timing issue...actual your timing is to far advance....this could be cheap gas or playing with the prediator to much...anyway I have a catch can (cause it looks good) but still not sold on it's function....also it's there for show....

We need coclusive evidence that this mod works. How much oil is lost into this catch can over a week that needs to be replaced? How much power if any is lost and why haven't the Engineers who designed these cars not figured this out????? Somthing does not add up

#24 ·
Funny you should ask...

#25 ·
Mine is normally about half full when I change my oil about every 4k miles or so. It's probably about 3-4 oz maybe. Not enough to have to worry about replacing in between changes. You are going to loose that amount anyway, but with a catch can you are collecting it and keeping it from being ingested by the motor.

whoa....didnt realize that catch cans played a huge role with you guys....so the benefits are it catches the vaped oil up before hitting tha manifold and tb? and the disadvantages of this thing are?

After a couple of thousand miles on a Sidewindered 5.7...

and that's all I'm gonna say about that..

Precisely :^)

#35 ·
Yep

There's a corollary to your last. That is "But some are more full of **** than others."

1) Mixing oil with the fuel lowers octane.
2) Lower octane equals greater potential for knock.
3) Our engines respond to knock by retarding ignition timing.
4) Reduced ignition timing decreases power.
5) The catch can "catches" at least some of the oil that would otherwise go into the engine.

Ergo, a catch can is a good thing. It will be my next mod.

Thanks for giving me a chance to add the corollary ! :thumbs_u:

So if you have a catch can... it's OK to delete your pcv valve? How do these two relate to each other? I have a catch can but the pcv valve has been deleted because of the after market valve covers. Are these two parts interchangable? There was just an open hose comming from the intake but I plugged it? Not trying to highjack a thread but was curious
