Thanks everyone!!
tick2791 and Cazca did a pretty good job summing it up haha!
This particular coin required a nomination from some higher ups, pretty cool cuz it's the first one I've received where they weren't just given out easily (like for answering a question or being in the right place at the right time haha) - only a few got it and had to be considerably earned. Awesome morale booster - dilutes homesickness haha.
I think it's more along the lines of, whoever doesn't have a coin pays for the drinks. I guess if everyone has a coin it goes to rank...?
Don't really care for the rank deal as I have coins ranging from 4 star gen and from boot camp instructor. My most coveted coin is from my boot camp instructor, the day he said you are no longer a maggot and you have earned my respect.
I was active duty USMC for 5 years and been in the National Guard since 2009.... never been coined. I don't hang out in bars too much though.
Hell of a coin though! I think my highest is from a full bird Colonel.
Amazing book! Another really outstanding read -- "Victory Point" provides insight and backstory to the book "Lone Survivor" except Victory Point is written by an embedded journalist with Marines...highly recommend!
WhenI was stationed in Bamberg Germany in the Army , oh a few decades go befoer here were command coins etc. ther was a cahallange , or actaully a check.
at the bar a "Phening ( german small coin) Check. " If you did not have a phening you had to buy th next round.
As was mentioned earlier, AI carried a pheningcoin in my wallet from the second day in country till I came home.
Congrats on your CINC HOA coin, SIERRA HOTEL!
The biggest bar tab I saw was from a poor coin-less 2LT at the airport in Dublin, Ireland who had to buy pints of Guinness for about 200 guys on our way home from a deployment. Lesson learned the hard way! LOL
After 20+ years in (last 12 in Special Ops) I gathered quite a collection. The most special ones of course are those awarded for a job well done. My favorites were from 1st Special Forces Operational Detachment-Delta and SEAL Team-2 in Bosnia, one from Commander-USSOCOM for rescue of F-117 pilot, AC-130 Spectre Gunship Close Air Support missions in Kosovo (jeweler buddy dipped it in gold for me), and another Commander-USSOCOM coin for operations in Iraq.
They are all priceless to me, but this was my first.
