    I used to work at a steel mill, and we welded a I beam on the front of the truck as a deer deflector. A 30MPH hit bent the frame, but not the I beam.

    That's a additional problem people don't ever think about.
    Sure, that big heavy bumper may protect your fenders and hood, but with a good impact you could see frame/subframe/unibody damage. (More likely to be totaled)
