Say goodbye forever to wussie visor retainers

Visor retainers are a notoriously weak and easily broken component in our LXes - in all Chrysler Corp. vehicles for that matter. Without even trying, you or your passenger *will* some day break the tip off of one these overly under-engineered  visor retainers.

A near-perfect, bullet-proof, replacement is made by GM. Ask for the visor retainer for any 2001-2004 Chevrolet SS or LSS model, and specify Beige as your color preference. The GM# is 1 5052538. Numbers following that, if needed, are: 99622 05230 GR 16 070.

A very simple modification is required to enable these retainers to fit properly. Using a pair of side cutters or hand jig saw merely cut the two smaller alignment posts off flush with the base of the retainer, leaving only the one large circular alignment post. Using the original screw and a T20 Torx driver, snug each retainer up tight.

Order two. Even special ordered you should have them within a couple of days. Cost is approx. $5 ea after tax. You'll never need to buy one again.

Notes:
1. Thanks go to my friend Mark - Z Magnum, formerly ZXLWNO - for first making me aware these exist.
2. DCX is making a slightly wider visor retainer now, but even if you are able to find that new unit it is not nearly as beefy as this GM item and appears still vulnerable.

heh... I broke my visor clip *on the way home* from the dealer when I bought the car....

You got pics of these beefy peices?

Thanks Cam. I often wonder why DCX didn't use the same ones that they use in the Rams? Those are bulletproof.

well, i got one of the GM clips. i tried using a diagonal cutter to trim the alignment posts, but the center post that i needed to leave, broke off while working on the rear fins. these seem rather brittle. the one i got was the right part number. one note is that the opening in the clip for the visor faces forward instead of back like the OE clip. its not an issue, i checked before trying to trim it and theres enough room to engage the clip. would have worked if i had used a dremel to trim it instead of the cutter. fyi ymmv.

Well thanks Meister for the info. I will remember this.

But is IT POSSIBLE, that all your guys breaking these are too rough?? lol

Seriously, the ONLY thing I ever broke on my car, and its not even really broken, is one pushpin underneath the car taking off the cover under the engine. I was on my back with very little room to move. lol

Chevy parts in my Chrysler

I got these GM parts from the local Chevy dealer, modified them as instructed in this thread and have them installed in about 10 minutes. They are sturdier than the original ones Chrysler supplied. It makes more sense to me that the open end faces forward rather than toward the interior as Chrysler had them. The visor works better as it is rotated around the axis.

Thanks to all.
