Does anyone have or know where I can find a list of the dates the Federal government started requiring different safety features on cars?n ex. TPMS was mandated starting in 2008.

thanks!

Might be hard to find just once source but a few that I know and found..

1966 - backup lights

1968 - seat belts, side marker lights, dual circuit master cylinder

1973 - door impact beams

1986 - high mounted brake light

1998 - dual front air bags

2013 - anti-lock brakes, electronic stability control

2018 - backup camera

U.S. Federal bumper standard issued 4/9/1971.

From https://sparebumper.com/federal-bumper-standards/

Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) 215, "Exterior Protection," which became effective on September 1, 1972. This standard called for passenger cars, beginning with model year 1973, to withstand 5 mph front and 2 ½ mph rear impacts against a perpendicular barrier without damage to certain safety-related components such as headlamps and fuel systems.

My 1969 Triumph GT6+ has the front bumper higher than model year 1968 to meet some "crash worthiness" standard.
I thought it was to meet U.S. import requirements, but a quick search didn't find any documentation.
It may have been a U.K. requirement.

What I found showed the stability control paired with the anti-lock brakes but as with other items, the automakers installed them before they were required.

Air bags nor required til 98 but Corvette had a driver side starting in 90 with duals starting in 94.

On the lights, don't know when it changed but we had an old 1955 boat trailer with a single steady burnibg light, no brake lights or signals, it just hooked to the boat battery and we had a few issues with cops with that rig until they got schooled, it was 100% legal and we ran that thing into the 90's.

MY Dad had a 47 something...maybe Plymouth...Just "one" red tail light that was centered, and was part of the license plate bracket...[ No, it did not illuminate the plate]...it was a dual bulb tail light , got brighter when braking....[ironically, the activation was with a pressure switch mounted on the master cylinder], and was a constant failure item.. The clutch and brake pedals were mounted under the car...pedals came up thru the floor...! So no way to mount a plunger switch under the dash...
And, yes, he still had to roll down the window to arm signal when braking, or turning....Arm up for right, straight out for left, and down for stopping....Which is why I also wondered if "directional signals" were mandated Federal...I do recall PepBoys selling a add on switch mechanism that clamped to the steering column of older cars, with a small rubber wheel that would track the revolving column and click a switch to de-activate the L or R rear add on lights...or something like that...

Also...I had late model cars with antilock brakes...but no stability control..?
