Can anyone tell me exactly what it is that a tuner does that gains an additional 10 or so whp? Already got my car tuned and everything. I'm just curious as to what exactly changes to let the car create more power after the headers are already on.
Closed Loop functionality never alters tables as they always drive to Stoichiometric.
You're right that AF and timing can be altered during Open Loop - even on stock engines to add more HP / TQ. We see this with the likes of Diablosport devices which push the envelope slightly - to extract more - just with a tighter margin of safety.
Nothing; a tune is not required to observe the gains that properly-sized long tube headers generate.
To observe the expected gains the headers (SRT manifolds are not headers) must be:
- Equal length tubes whose ID matches(!) the projected ci (its an air pump - end of story) that allows for Helmholtz Effect to actually be effective (bigger is not f'n better)
- properly size collector with aerodynamic cones to smooth air flow
- Flanges that match the ports they are being bolted to (this should be a no-brainer).
Once you change the headers especially long tubes you change the parameters the PCM is designed to monitor . So your fuel ratio is off they readjust what the needs are for the upgrade

During closed loop or open loop operation, the PCM commands stoichiometric or the preset values at WOT. Properly sized long tube headers simply allow for more A / F during the combustion cycle because they have assisted evacuating more spent exhaust gasses. That's it.
