Water pumps

At what mileage did you need a new waterpump? I'm replacing the fans and have a clean shot at the waterpump now. 130,000 miles plus. New dealer part or aftermarket?

I'll throw my 2 cents in here...
Water pump failure (noticeable weep hole leak) @ 68,000 miles. Replaced with parts store unit (shop provided), well... @ 84,000 I'm on my way to get a Mopar pump.

As for the tensioner failure..
Could the stamping of the leaf spring be the issue/difference? If the stamping processe leave the edge of the spring sharp, that could easily dig into the nylon. Just a though.

And that contributes to the cutting action of the fingers as the NYLON tensioner moves in response to acceleration / deceleration of the camshaft / crank assemblies. I didn't relay the whole story here (its in the 2nd of the two threads I posted on the problem); the inside edge of the leaf spring fingers is radiused. I think the radius contributes to the cutting action. Hence why I cut off the rounded portions and sanded the edges as smooth as possible:

A damaged NYLON tensioner. What you can't see is the damage to the tensioner protrudes out the bottom:

A new unit for comparison:

The radiused ends removed (note in this image I also remove the locking tab that pins back the tensioner during assembly):

The end result - but with five leaf springs instead of the normal four normally found in the 6.1 tensioner:

I'm getting close to 160k on my water pump, so far no issues as far as I can tell.

Same with chain and tensioner (which does scare me a bit, but I'm flat broke, so is what it is currently)

My Ram 1500 is at 182,000 and I finally replaced the pump when I did my cam n heads at 170,000... It died just before. [emoji1745]

So in simple terms...for everyone :^)

3G Hemi water pumps are very well designed parts. You can take it to the bank that those who designed it did so cause they, as Engineers, for a brand new engine design are proud Folks and were going to capitalize on everything they had learned to-date to produce a part that kicked ass and took names in the durability department. Cause that's what they do. Cause that's what their boss's demand...right up the top. Market share dictates that they f'n can't afford to do otherwise - especially these days.

There's enough folks out there who do understand the difference between reliability, emotion and needless expense. You know who those folks are? They are not here reading this. They are not even members of this great Forum we enjoy. And by-far...they outnumber us by f'n magnitudes.

So what happened with the design of the timing chain tensioner?
You make no f'ing sense.
You go through great lengths to brag about the reliability of the water pump and in the same thread point out a FACTORY (!) flaw (!) with the tensioner.

Tell us about the proud engineers that designed that piece of ****.

As far as the timing chain goes I can't understand why nobody has a nice dbl roller like they have available for every other ending? I looked and Manley is the only other I could find and people say they are suspect?

It's a fair question these days...

Back when these vehicles were debuted, no aftermarket performance parts were available. It took years before we saw anything come to market of merit. Truth is, our market base is no where near(!) as large as Chevy or Ford. The 3G Hemi's will always suffer from a lack of attention. I doubt any of the big players are considering marketing anything new going forward.

Does anyone know if the hellcat or demon motors use the same tensioner and chain as the 6.1 or. 6.4?

No. VVT (cam phasing) - similar to 09'+ 5.7 / 6.4

Yeah, and I also know that the LX cars are Daimler Benz and the hemi engines were pre-Fiat. Now, they are using the ZF transmissions that are German designed.

How did the Fiat 500 fare? From what I've read they are not going to be sold in the USA soon. I think this is the 3rd failed attempt to sell Fiats in the USA. Remember the Renault that was sold in the USA back about 1990. Terrible quality.
IMO, Fiat / Renault don't understand the western culture / market.

So I keep trying to get back to work on my car and tonight I have an hour and a half to two hours two Putz with it some more. So you'll remember I had to replace the fans that quit working and also the clutch on the air conditioner quit working long before my fans quit working and then I had the concern about changing the water pump while I'm right here looking at it and I do remember when I took off the upper hose I broke one of the thermostat housing bolts, so if I keep the water pump I have to drill out that broken bolt ugh. Now as I look at the water pump there's a black pipe that comes into it and I don't know how that comes out I guess I just tug on it once I take out the bolt and what's on the other end under the manifold?

Wiggle it out, get a new oring.

Get some left handed bits and center punch the bolt as close to center as you can.
Start with a small bit, drill it, go a couple sizes bigger, (but not over the tap drill size).
If you get lucky it will back out from the left hand drill twist.
Don't push hard, let the drill do the work, take your time.
Aluminum grabs hard so she may not back out on the drill.
I believe the bolt is a M8X1. 25, Tap drill 6.8mm or M8X1.00 tap drill 7.0mm.
If you get a good on center drill hole you can tap it out.
There is always the eazy_out.

Gapi, I did just that last night but it's must be so corroded that I'm leaving it to soak right now in some penetrating oil.

If you're good with a mig welder you can build the bolt up enough to grab it.
It's only $85 for a new chinese pump. Or its $7 for a "proven" pump at the u pull it.

Would your boss at the maintenance job prefer labor triple labor cost on a used part or a new one? That seems to be how this thread started.

As most on here know, this was never about aircraft parts :^)

Folks should realize that there were / are multiple Contractors to Daimler Chrysler / FCA that supplied the same parts to Factory assembly lines. It is these same Contractors who (now) supply to vendors like Rock auto.

Again and again and again...taking words, in this case from post #8 out of context and altering the content to suit your f'n narrative. Just like lying to us all about the dubious pics you posted in your valve seat thread.

I think at this point everyone here will agree to disagree. If you feel the need do it. If not don't. Let's roll on from this. It isn't helping anyone's situation. I get being frustrated with people's comments and opinions but I think it is made its point

Agreed.
