Posting Pics in Threads - How To

Given photoscumbucket has hijacked a number of us who used pics to augment our posts, we were forced to find other means of accomplishing this.

This thread can be a repository for folks to post instructions, suggestions, hints and tips on the utility they have elected to use to benefit all of us.

After trying a few utilities, I settled on Google Photo. With some assistance from BM_SRT, here is a How To:

    Using Google Photo:
    1) Download, or use Google Chrome (GC) as your browser (mandatory for Google Photo)
    2) Drag and drop pics at Google Photo (GP)
    3) Once you have pics in GP, make sure you see "Albums" at upper / left
    4) You will see three horizontal lines to the left of "Albums", click on it, then click on "Archive"
    5) In the upper / right corner you will see "Add Photos" or a pic image with a "+" sign (if GC is not full screen)
    6) Click on "Add Photos" or the pic image
    7) Select all the pics you want to post on the Forum, then click "Done". This has now moved copies of those pics into the "Archive" folder
    8) While in Archive folder, click on an image you wish to post here, it will expand
    9) Right click on the image and select "Copy image address"
    10) Now go to the post where you wish to place the pic
    11) In the "Quick Reply" window where you write to post a message, you will see icons along the top, hover over the one that looks like a picture, a dialogue box pops up saying "Insert Image", click on it
    12) An "Insert Image utility box pops up, select "From URL". Click in the URL command line and paste the image location you copied
    12) Un-check the box "Retrieve the remote file and reference locally" below the URL command line
    13) Press "OK", your pic(s) will now be shown in your post

I have always used tinypic.com and with Ad Blocker on using my chrome browser, it's usually pretty simple.

    1. Navigate to their site and click browse to select and image to upload.
    2. Select what size you want the image from the drop down box
    3. Click the green upload button. You usually get a box that pops up that you need to wait and enter the code, it's what they use to prevent spam uploads.
    4. From the "share this image" page, copy the "IMG Code for forums and message boards" url and post in your message here on the forum. The nice thing is that url already has the IMG codes so you don't have to do anything except hit "post quick reply"

The "direct link for layouts" url is also helpful, it's a direct link to your photo.

This was uploaded using these steps. Really easy...

I know that most people are probably looking for a free site to host your photos, but I also wanted to throw out a pay site that I use. I use SmugMug to host my photos. Since photography is also a hobby of mine, that is why I went with a pay site. It also allows for me a place to sell my photos on line. I have a separate "unlisted" gallery that I use for forum photos. I have unlimited photo storage, and linking to outside sites is very easy.

Here is a detailed list of the plans: Pricing & Plan Comparison | SmugMug

To link your photos in a forum post (once you have an account):

    1. From your gallery, click on the photo you want to share.
    2. When the full size version loads, click on the "Share" icon in the lower right. It looks like a box with an arrow pointing out of it.
    3. When the "Share" Dialog box appears, look for the "Embed" section.
    4. Choose the size that you want to share. I find that XLarge is best for forum posts.
    5. After selecting your size, a share link will appear in the window.
    6. Highlight the link, and Copy it to your clipboard.
    7. On your forum post, click on the "Insert Image" icon at the top of the post.
    8. When the "Insert Image" dialog box appears, click on "From URL".
    9. Paste the URL that you copied into the box.
    10. Uncheck the box that says "Retrieve remote file and reference locally"
    11. Click the OK button.

The following image is shared from my SmugMug site using the steps above.

    Great suggestion.

I struggled with pay versus free for months. I'm still on the fence :^)

Here is what just worked for me:

    1. Opened a web page at IMGUR.
    2. Select the picture to be uploaded and drag and drop it into IMGUR.
    3. Click on Insert Image in Quick Reply.
    4. Right clicked on the picture in IMGUR, and clicked on "copy image location" and pasted into “From URL”, and unclick “Retrieve remote file…”
    5. Click on “Post Quick Reply” – you done.

Really? Wow this is annoying, which is probably what Feathermerchant was trying to say, how is posting a picture such an issue these days of Instagram Facebook etc etc.

If I was to guess, make sure to uncheck the box that says "Retrieve remote file and reference locally".
