2010 5.7 swap to 2006

Hey guys I have a 2006 Charger RT with a bad 5.7. I have access to a complete 2010 (prod date 08/09) Charger that has a 5.7 VVT.

Is this a doable swap?

Same trans in 2010, problem is harness & PCM that can run VVT, accessories (accessory drive is different on the eagle engine) plus the ability to flash modules properly. Would be more hassle than it is worth and you would have a mutant if you got it to run/run right. Has it been done, yes. Is it an easy drop and go, no.

What's wrong with the engine? If you just need the block, then use the 2010 block with your heads, accessories, modules, etc. If you need a new block AND new heads, then order new (updated) 2006 heads to go on the 2010 engine block and still use your old accessories, modules, etc. I wouldn't mess with re-wiring the entire car. That's quite literally what you would be doing if you tried to use the 2010 Hemi in your '06.

I did some more research... :( I'd like to think you could just use the 2010 block (and internals) with a set of newly reconditioned and updated '06 heads and just change the tone ring... But there are so many differences that I don't know if that will actually work. Saying that 2009 was the first year for VVT doesn't do the changes to the block justice. WOW... There are a lot of changes. Check this link out: Rebuilding The 5.7L HEMI

Muscle Motors has. Won't be cheap. Was quoted about $13,000 for an OEM 392 swap in to an '06 R/T. That includes all the computer and harness work as well as having to buy a brand new engine from them (they won't do it otherwise). Isn't worth the expense.

A year ago I would have said an Eagle swap into a pre eagle chassis was a non starter but....it's so much easier than what "shops" want you to know. Going about it by thinking you can just change a couple modules around is not the correct why to think about it. YES you will need to pull the crank and swap reluctor rings. But it's at the cost of a set of bottom end bolts. At that point the older PCM thinks you have the same engine in it. Up top you will use a phaser lock on the cam and leave the VVT solenoid unplugged. YES you will need a custom tune to tune off the EGR since the Eagle 5.7 did not have it.

What no one has been able to convince me of, if disabling the VVT anyway. WHAT'S THE POINT? Same displacement, same bore and stroke, you can bolt eagle heads and intake (or even 392 intake at that point) on to a pre-eagle block and they work great with the greater cam selection you have. Custom tune and have fun. Disabling the VVT removes the only advantage the newer engine has lol.

I have been wondering about doing this swap too. My 06 300C Heritage has a dead engine. If I had access to a low mile 2010 engine, which wouldn't need to be cracked open, engine harness and PCM, why can't it be installed in place of the 06 engine? No crank wheel would need to be changed since I would use the 10 PCM. I already know an 07 NGC4 PCM will work in place of my 06 NGC3 PCM so I am speculating that a 2010 NGC4 will too. So I am with Bluepost wondering why it cannot be done. I realize most of you guys "think" it can't be done but nobody seems to know for sure.

Bluepost has an entire 2010 from which to swap parts. Assuming the entire interior wiring harness doesn't have to be changed, it doesn't sound like a big deal to me. Of course I am new here and new to these cars, so I do not know their pitfalls yet. So, does anyone know of someone who had tried this?

I think this sounds like a cheaper option that tearing down my 06, spending 1000 just on fixed heads from Inertia, probably have to change a piston or two, corresponding rods, replace all the bearings, possibly lifters and timing set too while I am in there. That's all adding up to more than $2000 USD. I can buy a new take out engine for $3-4000 CAD and never have to worry about dropped valve seats or crappy lifter rollers or crappy timing components.

Surely someone has tried this on this forum. I will continue searching. and post back if I find something.

It's not going to work with a simple PCM swap. If it was that easy everyone would be swapping to Eagle 5.7's. You are going to have to pull the crank and swap reluctor rings. $300 worth of bolts is what keeps people from going an Eagle swap into pre Eagle cars. Then of course you will need to lock the cam phaser.

As for the lifter issue ....trust me a 2010 is not safe from lifter problems so you aren't off the hook there.

It looks like Holley is getting this stuff figured out. According to them:

The HEMI's Variable Valve Timing is not supported by the Holley EFI systems at this time. You can run an engine that is equipped with VVT, but the cam timing will revert to the mechanical default. The Holley R&D team is working on an accessory harness that will drive the VVT actuator. However, it is not available at this time.
No mention of locking out the cam. Interesting.
