Affordable solution for OEM HID headlights for Chargers!

Second post now updated with how-to info.

First off thanks to Porkchop for attempting this project along with me. I know a lot of the Charger crowd has been looking for an affordable way to have the OEM HID projector headlights. Well it seems it has been found!!! I have an 06 and correct me if I'm wrong but I believe the wiring was changed in 08 (they first year they had HID headlights) so it's going to take a little bit of custom wiring for pre 08 Chargers but nothing too difficult. So far I've invested only about $270 (not including the HID kit I already owned) and I believe I have everything to make this happen. More to come soon.....

So what I set out to do is get the OEM style HID projectors working for my 06 Charger for less than $300 bucks. They were only made from 08-10 and have slightly different wiring so that had to be addressed along with buying HID lights that are compatible with both my current 9006 HID kit and the OEM projectors. Here are all the supplies needed:

OEM style HID projectors from 1AAuto: $229 shipped
2 D2S HID bulbs: $15 shipped
2 D2S wiring harness socket adapters: $10 shipped

And the less important items used were:

Purchased from www.pcsconnectors.com:
2x 4 cavity Delphi 15487756 Metripack GT 150 female connector
4x Delphi 12191819 Metripack GT150 female terminal - 16/18 gauge

Purchased from www.autolumination.com/connectors.htm:

2x Socket extension assembly for low beam. 9" wire lead. Bulb: 9006 9006XS Male

And then from the local auto parts store:
Black silicone sealant
Wire grommets

Ok so now that you have all the needed supplies the first thing that you do is drill a hole in the bottom outside portion below the low beam bulb part of the housing. The hole needs to be large enough that the HID connectors can fit through (you can wire them through one at a time if needed).

Once the hole has been drilled go ahead and put the D2S wiring harness adapter into the low beam housing where the bulb goes with the connectors exiting the drilled hole. I went ahead and put the wire grommet around the hole at this point as well.

Now you need to connect the D2S bulb to the wiring harness and plug it in to the projector housing. Remove the metal clip in the headlight housing and fit the bulb in there with the harness attached properly. The bulb fits into the housing with the "white stick" pointing down and there will be a notch on top of the bulb that lines up with the one on the housing. They do not twist in like the 9006 bulbs, instead it's held in by the metal clip that came with the headlights. Just reinsert the metal clip with the indention out and it will fit pretty snug.

Now that you have the low beams all taken care of it's time to build the connector for the high beams. If you have an 08-10 model you can skip this step because your stock connector should work just fine. The 06-07 models have a 2 pin connector instead on the 4 pin.

So take the socket extension purchased from autolumination and crimp the female terminal to the end of the stripped wire. Once attached, insert the female terminal into the correct side of the 4 pin female connector. Make sure you get it down in there good so the connection will work properly.

Do the same for the other wire and you will have this:

Now you're only going to use the bottom two holes on the female connector since the low beams will be wired directly to your HID kit. To know which wire goes where, make sure the side of the connector with the clip is facing left, and use the very bottom hole for the negative wire and the hole above for the positive wire (as pictured above!). This applies to both sides because the clips face the same direction.

Now that you have that done go ahead and connect the 4 pin connectors together, it just snaps into place.

I didn't take a picture but at this point I went ahead and put some of the black silicone sealant between the wire grommet and where the HID connectors are coming out of the drilled hole. It was a tight fit already with the wires coming out, but it's just another precaution to make sure they are air tight.

Now for the easy part! Go ahead and use one of the various write-ups available to remove your front fascia. Once removed, there are three 8mm bolts holding the headlights on (top, outside, and bottom). Remove those and disconnect all of your old wiring. Then replace with the projectors and connect everything correctly. This should be pretty self explanatory because at this point all of the wires are just plug and play and can only connect one way.

Once everything is connected make sure you test the low and high beams to make sure all of the connections are correct. Another trick I learned is if you clip one side of the wire that's on the turn signal bulb it will only come on as a turn signal, and will not be lit when the headlights are on. Since I want just the white HID light shining when I have them on I went ahead and did that.

Once you're sure everything is working properly, bolt it all back up and you're all set! Grab a beer and enjoy those new OEM style HID projectors for under $300! (Don't judge by the pics below, my digital camera sucks at picking up light! There's a nice cut off line and they don't look like a blur as they do in these pics. I'll add some more night pics with a different camera soon.)

Yeah buddy! $1100 conversion oem cut down to less than $300. Funny how two guys from different sides of the US can pm each other like mad to experiment with a new idea.

A waaaaay better solution over junk eBay projectors with small H1 bulbs and crap led's with wiring everywhere.

-Oem style quality.
-20-30% of Oem cost for the same look.
-No wiring mess.
-No cheap led's/halo's from eBay that burn out.

Can't wait to get them installed.

Aftermarket oem style projectors.

The oem d1s bulb requires expensive oem ballasts and igniters and bulb. Here is a d1s bulb from a 300 hid.

The hid oem internal headlights wiring.

Here is where me and the op explored. The d1s bulb and d2s bulb fit inside the housing perfectly but the d2s bulb is a second generation hid system that doesn't use that box looking igniters. The d2s system has igniters built into their ballasts (kinda like the new aftermarket kits we all use) so that's why you cant interchange them. Now, someone who already has a hid kit for 9006 low beamz can simply use d2s bulbs and adapters (I paid 23 cash for two bulbs and adapters on eBay shipped) and plug them via those black and yellow connectors also known as amp connectors.

Only downside is how do you hold in place?

Simple, just remove the clip and flip it around with minimal bending of the tabs.

Trust me, its not going anywhere.

You can either run the wiring under the housing, or through the factory wiring route.

$230 shipped for new housing.
$23 shipped for bulbs adapters.
$47 shipped for my old 9006 hid kit with capacitors already installed.

$300 for $1100 dollar oem 08+ projectors.

edit: wiring options....you can either do two thing.
1) solder on extra amp connectors to eliminate the d1s connector and purchase an oem 4 pin pigtail harness and have that running to dual 9005/9006 connectors for low/high beam. (Best bet)
2) run the amp connectors off the d2s bulb under the housing where the oem ballast would be or drilling holes in those caps and sealing them with dynamat.
I might either run the wiring through the caps via a drilled hole and use dynamat to seal it. It may collect moisture in the housing if it gets wet or gets inside. I'm not sure yet but I will follow up later.

I believe that 1aauto.com is still a vendor here (a very quiet one) and they are Taiwan aftermarket oem lights. I had eagle eye taiwan lights in my tbird for 6 years after my oem ones went yellow, not one problem.

Click here to see their thread on one of their first post:

If they are no longer a vendor then I will edit post but their names and profiles still show as vendors.

looks can be deceiving I know I know it looks bad but like i said I did this to my tbird and even after 5 years its not fogging or getting wet. Either do this or modify the wiring.

Try back everyday. I clicked to have an email sent to me when they became available but never recieved it. When i saw it available on their site I called and placed an order.

Says available as of 12:30 am pacific. Took me two days to order it cuz it said back order the whole time.

The reason why I went with dynamat is because a few years ago I drilled holes in my tbird headlight housing for strobe bulbs, I know lame right? I removed it eventually bit they started to fog up because I didn't seal it up. Maybe water got in and created moisture. After discussing with the op I believe you can probably get away with routing the wiring for the projector through the bottom ballast hole and then modifying the wiring to connect to your harness. I want to put these in asap, I don't have the connectors or wiring, and dynamat hasn't let me down in the past. Those are the reasons I went the route I did. There are many ways to get this to work but as long as it is safe and won't malfunction then by all means experiment :)

I am liking this solution. I just bought my 2007 charger last month and it had an aftermarket hid, which I really like the look, but it is messing up already (sometimes one side doesn't fire), and the leds look cheap mostly and one is blinking ugh. Is this worth looking into for a 2007 model. I'm not sure what is different with 2008 setup.

Thanks

I have a 2007. Pre 08 chargers didn't have projectors and the 08+ ones that did come with them had different connectors and wiring. Oem units with ballast's/bulbs/igniters/and wiring cost an arm and a leg from the dealership. This is a cheaper/faster solution. If you want to search for used oem units on eBay for 500+ and want true oem partaking then go for it. You don't have to drill or modify the housing like I did, you can modify your pre 08 charger to 08+ hid wiring.

Took me a few days as well. Got a teaser pic.....still has plastic wrap around it from shipper.

Better than non projector don't you think? ;)

#23 ·
If you want to keep your high beams you need to convert to the h9 bulbs and connectors that come with the after market headlights.

That price is one ballast at 90+ shipping.

Still would need wiring, igniters, and bulbs. Ouch.
