I haven't noticed (but also haven't looked for) any hood switch on three '06 models and one '05, so I wonder if your car has remote start - that might be a switch that prevents remote start if the hood is open.

That's exactly what it's for. I bought a factory one and used it for my aftermarket remote start unit. I hated the idea of using the cheap looking pin switch that usually comes with all aftermarket kits.

Batteries don't like being totally discharged. That is what deep cycle batteries are for maybe.

Some battery chargers such as the one I bought from Walmart are "smart" chargers and have a setting for restoring a dead battery. Might work?

I've never been able to leave my Maggie sit for more than maybe 2-3 weeks before the battery is dead (last 7+ yrs I figure). Using a yellow top. I think all cars now have a slow drain that will kill any battery after 2-3 weeks if not left on a trickle charge. I just disconnect the battery now if I know I'm not going to start her for the next week or more.

How quick does the battery go dead?

I had a problem with battery drain, found my cluster was not going to sleep.

Pulled all fuses and relays, still would not go to sleep.

Pulled power lead from under hood fuse box and the cluster would go to sleep.

Pulled fuse box and fooled with the wiring mess, put back together and the problem went away.

Really odd.
