Windows Tinting Essentials For California LX Owners

For California Folk: What you should know Before you have your windows tinted!

Summary:

  • Left & Right Side Mirrors required
  • Windshield: A strip of the top 4 to 5 inches
  • Driver / Passenger: 70% VLT or better
  • Rear Passenger: No restriction
  • Rear Center: No restriction
  • Exceptions: Darker with Dr. signed affidavit

Further Detail:

Some peace officers are now carrying a Light Transmittance meter, which reads how much light is passing through the glass. As long as your Driver & Passenger windows have 70% film on them, and you have both side mirrors, you should be good (new for 2017). Whatever is "behind your head" can be dark as you wish though, so do what you like there. For the windshield, you can put a top "visor strip" of 4 to 5 inches, but if you are tall enough for this to impair your vision straight ahead, you could be cited. Finally, if you have a doctor's signed affidavit of medical condition of your eyes or skin cancer (for instance), you can tint darker (new for 2018). The notice must be carried in your car, but be advised it gets into a grey area about whether that vehicle can be driven at night.

Actual Law:
Here is the actual law on the matter. The short version is, you can't have anything on the windows or obstructing your view, except for "these 19 things" (which they go into great detail to explain, tint among them).
CVC Chapter 4, sec 26708, c (windshield) and d (side windows).

Conclusion:
The one thing I detest is repeating myself (like paying to put on window tint, so I can tear it off, and Pay to have it done again), so I hope this helps you decide how you wish to approach your tinting. Then you won;t have to tear it off, sign off a ticket and pay to put it back on again! If you find any of this information is outdated or incorrect, please advise and I will edit this.
