Help is needed!!!!!

If you haven't seen yet we've stood up a message board to discuss this very topic. We're making good strides and we still encourage support from everyone here.

I want to put out a call for anyone who has been held back by the CAN Bus. If you'd like to see something made possible by getting around it then let us know!

Click on the picture in my signature below to check out the progress, offer your support and post your ideas and concerns.

Also, we have set up a donation account on paypal to fund the development of this project.

Website: www.canhack.org
Donations: donations@canhack.org

Thanks Everyone!!

Wow, now this excites the motorhead AND the nerd in me. I'll be happy to donate some fundage as soon as I can! Will this hacking assist in the installation/use of aftermarket stereo equipment? DVD playback in the Nav drive? Multi-band equilizer? Anything like that? Either way... sweeeeeeet.

Aftermarket amps and such, yes... Aftermarket head units, not so much, but see http://www.pac-audio.com for the Steering wheel interface ( currently in beta for our vehicles ).

One of the items on my todo list is an AMP emulator which allows you to remove the factory amp, without loosing your fade control. ( i.e. plug this box in inplace of the amp, and it'll give you 2 line level outputs, one front, one rear )

After this device, you could use any sort of processing equipment you desire.. DSP, EQ, custom crossovers, anything..

DVD playing in the NAV drive is kind of out of the question. This drive is required to have to NAV Dvd in it for the unit to operate. The best thing you can do is the TVandNavToGO patch. It allows you to display any video source on your NAV display ( including a back up cam! ).

Thanks for the interest, and the vowed support! Come on over to our forums to get more info on what's goin on!

Are you doing this TVandNavToGo patch

I was just referred to them today by the installer I was going to allow to put in my new stereo. I have no interest in replacing the head unit. All I want is to be able to keep its functions (UConnect, Nav voice, fade, balance, etc) and replace the stock amp with the JL e6450. That's all.

How much money do you need to get this device built, because assuming there's no loss in audio fidelity, that's exactly what I need. I'm not rich, but I will certainly give as much as I can to see a quality device in my hand... and I guess if it helps out the rest of the community, that's cool too...

I'm not really aware of that mod, I'll have to look into it. It sounds sweet though. I suppose this device would allow for video input and audio? What about VGA from a computer? Hooking up a tiny Home Theater PC to that tiny screen would be an insane mod... I'll poke around the canhack forum, THANKS!

That's what we're aiming for..

Well, we're really still in the data collection/CANid Mapping phases of this project. There's roughly 300 messages per second going across this bus. We have decoded the Sirius controls ( both to and from the nav ).. So that's one big step. Just a matter of capturing the right sequence of events, and decoding the data. Keep watch'n.. .it won't be long!

See, now that's what I want to do... I'm gonna put a mini-itx PC someplace, and have it display through the NAV unit. I just need to decipher what resolution and refresh rate the LCD supports.. :)

For those that are curious about the data that we're looking at, have a peek at the CAN Logger analysis tool I wrote... http://www.canhack.org/can_logger

It will allow you to pick a run, and All CAN ids or just specific ones. Be warned, you should really look at using the 'Distinct Data Mode'... without this, you could get bogged down for a while ( or worse, my server could! ) waiting for 30,000 packets worth of data to come across...

I'm really quite excited about this whole project... And it's only a matter of time before we get all sorts of cool mods from this. Again, Keep watch'n! It won't be too long!

Well, I've never been any good at code or programming of any kind - save for a few Excel spreadsheets... I figure all I can do is offer financial backing. I'm glad we're on the same page as far as the mini-PC thing goes. Having access to my full MP3 collection AND DVD collection from the car will be quite excellent...

It would also allow for custom/updateable GPS/Nav software... Google Earth anyone? Hahahaha! I think I'm having a nerdgasm...

Just a quick status update...

We've got all the data decoded to make a Sirius emulator for XM Radio. I'm writing perl code as a proof of concept.. ( will run on a Linux based PC ). When this is done, it will be a basis for the microcontroller programmers to write code from.

Will keep all updated on the progress...

Dominic, besides the fact that you have not registered as a vendor, thus becoming a "spammer", this is a very inappropriate thread to make this post.

Hey Dom,
Thanks for the offer of support.. There is no doubt that you have a wealth to offer this project...

I've followed your products for a while now, and I must say that I'm very impressed with the quality.

One thing I've noticed you don't offer is a PC interface.. ( RGB / DB-15 plug on the box ). Would this be a difficult addition to your existing adapter? Also, can you tell us ( on open forum ) what the supported resolution of the screen is in our NAV Units?

Any information you can share will be very helpful... I know a few of us are looking to integrate a full PC into our LX's, so being able to use the screen on the NAV for the PC Display would be a sweet 'OEM' looking integration.

I'll probably give you a call tomorrow sometime ( my schedule permitting ) about this and other curiosities.. :)

Thanks again Dom...

Dominic is a trusted vendor over at 300cforums.com is case anyone is concerned.
This does not change the fact that unsolicited advertisements from non-suipporting vendors are not allowed.

When Dominic becomes a supporting vendor, (and I am aware that he is in process of doing so) there will be no problems with his posts.

I second this. I know I would personally be running my "XGA Theater" scan converter/switcher to drive NTSC over a vga connection, the tuner is great, and extensive testing has shown that it works directly from 12V, or 11-14 without frying.

Of all the mods I want to see, it's a VGA (DVI, dream on) plugin for the screen! Combined with 802.11g, I can roll into the garage and synch up with my HTPC whenever I need to get new movies/music... I could even get that dumb USB adapter for my cell phone and have wireless internet in the car...
