I received a email from NASA NE today stating that in order to participate in any racing events at New Jersey Motorsports Park you must have a full-face helmet.

On a side note, my open-face helmet will be up for sale soon.

Hmmm, those are strongly NOT recommended in SCCA stuff bacause an air bag set off may break your neck... Gonna look into this a bit deeper and see what the train of thought is

Been in the New Jersey rule book for an hour. It has NOT changed since May 2009, I think NASA is interperting it wrong. A call to NJMP may prove either way.

Racing event? Could be different from HPDE since NASA does run actual races during their weekends.

That would also make sense because race cars shouldnt have airbags anyway.

NJMP HELMET REQUIREMENT !!
For 2011, NJMP is requiring ALL DRIVERS and passengers to wear FULL FACE helmets. This requirement is only for events at NJMP.
We will have a limited supply available for rent
but suggest that you make your own arrangements if you are currently using an open face model."

The least they could do is explain the logic, if there is any. Probably an insurance company is dictating the change without realizing that the full face can be more dangerous in air bag equipped rides. I guess the insurance company has never seen the rivers that cross the track surface in a heavy rain. Maybe that should be the first place they focus.

lol. I'm glad I packed it in before the lake formed. That was my first legit track day and the morning ride was enough for me. I was glad to drive it home intact. The original Goodyear RSAs didn't help much either.

Yea, those rivers made for some interesting driving that is for sure. I only got stupid crossed up going into 12 ( not the turn you want to screw up on ).

I've looked into this a little further and this new helmet rule is coming down from the state of NJ. It's not from NJMP or NASA.

Typical big government bureaucracy. I bet the idiot that made this change has never been to a track in his life.

So if I wee to drive down a road with my open face helmet on, I'd get a ticket? Do bicyclists need to use a full face helmet now too. Law makers are so messed up.

The rain conditions at NJMP for the lx track day last year would have happend at literally any track in the world that isnt completely flat (like sebring) with it raining that much.

Requirement for NJMP Events: We have been advised that New Jersey Motorsports Park (per NJRS
13:62, Motor Vehicle Racetrack Regulations) will this year require all helmets to be the “full face” type.
We have been advised that “in a closed car the face shield is not required.”

put an email into NJMP asking what combos (05? 10? M? SA?) are valid and at what events.

technically we should be able to use 05M and 05SA helmets still until 2012 but if they won't let me use my M helmet in the car I guess I'm buying a new helmet. Probably should buy a new one anyways in both cases but I'd rather not have to do it RIGHT NOW!

Looking into this a little, I see concern over CHIN injury, nothing about necks.

I was concerned, as I use a full face and an active air bag.

I think it was blown out of proportion... for reference, try and find the original scca advisory!!!

http://www.scca.com/_Filelibrary/File/AirbagAdvisory.pdf

It appears to have disappeared into the nethers...

Nothing new on it, that I can find since 2004-5 although it has spread like gospel through so many forums.

Edit:

Found an old one that works:

http://www.mohud-scca.org/Info/download/PB%2005-01%20Airbag%20Advisory.pdf

If it really was an issue, I'd expect something more current.

I am not going to risk popping an airbag and snapping my neck.

As much as I love NJMP I won't race there any more.

I got this email back from Joe Volpe over at NJMP...

Hi John,

As the Chapter 62 regulations currently read, only Closed face helmets are allowed. They must meet Snell Standards for 2000 or newer, so 2000, 2005, and 2010 are legal. We have requested a rule modification that would allow open face helmets under specific circumstances such as HPDE (DE) events. Closed face will still be mandatory under race conditions.

If open face helmets are approved for DE events, face shields would not be mandatory unless you are in an open cockpit car such as a Formula or Sports Racer.

“M” Rated helmets are allowed in DE events where fire protection is not required. Again, they must be closed face with shield at this time.

All of the helmets you have listed below are legal for DE events if they are closed face. Your SA helmets would also be legal for racing where fire protection is required.

We hope to have a decision on the Open/Closed face issue very soon.

Thank you,

Joe Volpe
Director of Motorsports Activities
New Jersey Motorsports Park

I can understand the need/want for a full face helmet for racing type events, but I'm glad they're working to still allow open face ones for HPDE (DE) type events.

you know what's funny about all this... the rule change went into effect in May of 2009. Yet we had that track date in March 2010 and I know I ran an open face helmet... so did my instructor. I even went back 2 weeks later with the Red Line Time Attack people and same deal... both myself and my instructor had open face helmets. In fact the only people who had full face helmets were the guys who WERE there for the actual time attack race. So technically we were all really naughty boys and girls last year, including the track tech people!

We have received approval to allow open face for drivers education events. Not racing. Thanks.

So I'm in the clear for my NARRA event in June, at least in terms of using an open-face helmet. :D

xevilpetex
05-05-2011, 08:08 PM
Yes, the 2014 sticker means they will just look at that sticker during tech instead of looking at the actual SA sticker until 2014. After 2014 you will need a SA2010 or SA2015 rated helmet. They update the spec for helmets every 5 years and most organizations allow the 2 most recent helmet specs.

Hey guys!

figured I'd update you on my outing. Yes I was able to run in HPDE with an open face. there was some confusion at tech about it but a couple walkie-talkie calls plus me having the emails printed from Joe Volpe (NJMP) and Melissa (NARRA) made it pretty quick to sort out. curiously enough they put a '2010' sticker on my helmet as well for whatever that's worth. I'll be retiring my open-face helmet anyways since I got someone cool (to me at least!) to sign it. :D

Anyways I ran a best of 1:51.064 around Thunderbolt with the stock suspension and alignment on the car. There were a couple places on the track I was still leaving some time on the table and if I hadn't started getting pretty bad brake fade in the last hot session I participated in on the 2nd day I probably could have knocked that down into the 1:49 range. Overall it was a good day and I didn't break the car (in my book that makes it a good outing!)

here's a couple pictures...

also somewhat related... I took a chance at the end of last year and bought something that I hoped would work out. stupidly I never took any pictures of the whole thing while at the track but this will give you an idea...

http://i519.photobucket.com/albums/u356/tehsota/cars/2007%20Jeep%20Liberty/HPIM2236.jpg

I bought that Jeep (2007 Liberty v6 6spd manual 4x4) with the intention of it taking over daily driving duties (for the car on the trailer as it turns out) as well as being able to haul the car to/from tracks. I'm not ashamed to say I was nervous when I first picked up the trailer a couple weeks ago (free loaner from a friend) from out in Long Island but I can now say with confidence that that little Liberty towed the setup LIKE A BOSS. I estimate 5300# out back there with car, trailer and spare tires and I spent 85% of my time in cruise doing 65mph without issue while in 6th gear (0.84 overdrive with 3.55 rear gears.)

Ron380

So that's what Thunderbolt looks like when it's dry! :pepper: Looks like you had a great time! I think your tires were screaming for mercy by the time you were done. LOL

Kind of surprised the Liberty can tow that much, do you have a trailer brake too? Have fun with it!

Sota
06-24-2011, 08:44 PM
yea by the end of day 2 I'd had like I said severe brake fade and on my cool down lap I picked up a wicked vibration... probably clag all over the tires. I tried to make another good set of times in another session but the brake fade was still there and the vibration wouldn't go away. so rather than push it like a fool I decided to pack it up and call it a weekend.

as for the liberty, yea they can tow. the autos are rated to 5000# and the sticks in the US are listed as 3500# max. that's total donkey dung though as the EXACT SAME vehicle in europe and mexico gets a 5000# rating for the stick shift. also i've seen some of the diesel autos tug 7400# out the back without trouble and when you look at the HP/TQ numbers by gearing between the gasser 6 6spd and the diesel autos they're really close so I decided to take the chance. I installed a MaxBrake brake controller in the jeep (electric over hyraulic) and it works fantastic. the brakes on the jeep are quite surprising as I had a couple incidences happen on the way down to the track... one of the trailer axle springs BROKE and that caused an intermittent short in the brakes so I'd occasionally NOT HAVE TRAILER BRAKES! the jeep actually dealt with it quite well for a 4200# vehicle. needless to say the trailer is being fixed right now and I'm sure glad I don't own it! and as an additional aside take a look at this picture...

http://i519.photobucket.com/albums/u356/tehsota/cars/2007%20Jeep%20Liberty/HPIM2073.jpg

that would be the day I brought the liberty home. I drove about 100 miles out to the poconos in the car towing the dolley behind it, bought the jeep, then towed the car home that same night. oh and I installed the wiring and hitch on the jeep in the parking lot of the dealer. they thought I was crazy. that was about 3600# on the hitch with surge brakes on the tow dolley and it towed just fine. yes... my first 100 miles driving the jeep I was TOWING SOMETHING.

I plan on getting my own trailer probably next year. i'm thinking an open center deck variant to keep the weight down since I can't afford an aluminum trailer ($$$$$$!) plus as someone else at the track pointed out it makes it really easy to work on parts of the car since it's now a poor man's lift sort of!

Track Daze has June 30th and July 1st already booked.
NASA has Thunderbolt for the weekend of 10/28-10/30. could just mass-enter on them. :pepper:
there's absolutely NOTHING booked after 11/14 so I'm wondering if they don't shut down that weekend before.
