Been a while since I've posted over here . . .

Thought some of you road course guys would enjoy watching an 'old boy' mixing it up on a track with a gang of youngsters. :)

Back in September, I was in England for a couple of weeks. The opportunity to do some lapping in a Formula Silverstone open wheel racer came up, so I went for it.

Silverstone is the heart and soul of F1 racing - almost all the teams are HQ'd here.

The car that all of us were driving is very close in design, weight, and overall dimensions to a Formula 1 car - with 2 notable exceptions; we had under 200 hp compared to over 1000 hp in an F1 racer - and - we had no electronics; not even ABS brakes, while the F1 cars have unbelievable electronic systems.

There were 15 people in my group. Silverstone provided each of us with an identical formula car. At the driver's briefing, I soon became aware that half the participants were half my age and the other half were probably a third my age.http://www.300cforums.com/forums/images/smilies/new/pat.gif Plus, many had shown up with Piloti shoes; gloves; designer suits; custom helmets. I had jeans; sneakers and borrowed a brain bucket from the track. I had no way of knowing what experience each driver had - I just wanted to get out on the track and enjoy driving a dedicated race car at speed, and stay out of the way of any fast cars.

My experience in single seater, open wheel cars is limited - and goes back to over 3 decades ago. The car had 2 video cameras embedded, so here is 90 minutes of footage edited down to 8 minutes.

It is only at the end of lapping that I knew how I did, other than who passed me (nobody) and how many passes I managed (4). At the debriefing, there were 3 of us with the fastest lap times (all within 1 second of each other), then a gap of 4 seconds down to the rest.

Ride along now with the Wolf - as we take on the legendary Silverstone race track; the English weather, and poke fun at a gang of young guys with some video commentary . . .

Driving one of these machines, was, for me, a total rush . . .
