View Full Version : Just Adopted: Two Adorable Hoosier R100 Race Radials

01-20-2010, 08:59 PM
Yes, Darth has been waiting for a long time, but before he could take his turn at razing a pair of R100 full-on race slicks, he had to run through his supply of R6's. There were 8 of them in the garage when the decision was made to only adopt R100's.

Well, last month at Laguna Seca, The most-worn pair finally started showing cords. And, while I could get another day out of them if I employed a magic marker to get them past tech, I felt that I had better call the adoption agency, since my next track event is a 2-day deal in the desert.

So on Tuesday I called up Hoosier. Their Western U.S. warehouse is in Fresno, which just happens to be in the same town I work in. They told me they had five candidates and, with an emotional tremor in my voice, I told them to pick out two of the nicest for my buddy Darth.... I'd finally gone and done it.

... Unfortunately my ATM card was burned to a cinder in the process, but thats another story entirely.

So I show up down at the warehouse to pick up Darth's new babies, and man what a sight... slicks stacked up here, there and everywhere. And thru that door over there... more slicks! Man I tell you it was enough to make me want to bring in an assault rifle and barricade myself in (Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms... who's bringing the chips?).

Anyway, I arrive back home and introduce Darth to his new kin. Here's a shot of the happy family when they arrived:

Aren't they cute? Of course, nothing is too good when it comes to taking care of the kids. Here they are all snug as bugs, tucked in for beddie-bye.

I'll just go get some cookies and warm up some milk for the little tykes. Ah here we are.

hmmm, what are those zany kids up to now?

Deep breaths! Deep breaths! ... Wash out eyeballs ... Dip ears in acid ... Egads don't just stand there DO something!

If I let nature take its course, there's free tires on the way.

Lets give these two lovebirds a little privacy, shall we?

Congratulations, let's hope for TWINS.

Haha :) doesn't take much to make me laugh.

01-20-2010, 10:00 PM
what size did you get?
265/645/18. 25.5" diameter. Rated for a 9" rim but I had a private chat with a source at Hoosier who said they should fit my 8.5" Borbet's. Lining them up against the 255/40/18 DOT R6's, they are a little wider. Not much. And the R6's are straight up on the edges of the 8.5 rims. We'll see. I am a little anxious but the math on the specs says there is very little difference.

The R6 tread has a bowed shape, while the R100 has a flat, squared-off profile. My gut tells me there's more contact patch improvement here than the spec sheet says.

But the most important part is the sidewall logos are painted. Thats a full second off my lap time right there.

That is hilarious!

01-21-2010, 01:13 AM
LOL.... what an awesome thread.

I dont see any kids resulting from this though. I have a feeling that the one tire was wearing a rubber.... :bahdumcha:

Enjoy the new tires brother!

01-27-2010, 04:22 PM
well, what's the expected term on the baby Hoosiers? they need to pop out twins in the next month or so.

01-27-2010, 04:45 PM
The tires got ... um ... mounted yesterday. They seem to fit well on the rims, even though they went onto 8.5" Borbets that my source at Hoosier said would work (supposedly they require a minimum 9" rim). I'll fit them on the car this weekend. Eyeballing them lying flat alongside an R6, they don't seem to be any wider (the specs say the tread is a couple tenths wider). You can see they are shorter (25.5" vs. 26.2").

At Willow Springs, given how the drivers front tire takes a beating on that track, my four R6's will get rotated session by session on the front. These new R100's will stay on the back for the two days I'll be there. I expect to lose another pair of the R6's so I'll be running the two days at Laguna with two more... grownups. When I go after that lap record I want R100's on every corner.

You'll loose some of the width from having it on such an undersized rim.

01-27-2010, 07:29 PM
Well, the tape measure isn't bearing that out. Reading the spec sheet, The 265/645R18 has a tread width of 10.1" and a sectional width of 10.9". The 255/40/18 reads 9.8" and 10.6". Only a 0.3" difference on both measurements. 0.15" each side. I put those numbers to Hoosier and said "c'mon is 9" really the minimum if you say the 255 can take an 8.5?" They said it'd work. Not optimal but it'd work.

Actually measuring the tire, mounted, the tread width on the R100 is coming out dead on the money with the spec sheet. Its the R6 thats reading a hair wider than spec... which puts the two tires effectively at the same width (if I had a decent-sized level I'd lay the two flat, side by side and see if my eyes are telling the same story as the level). Will be interesting to see the for-reals contact patch of the R100 once I can get a few revolutions on pavement.
