Is there a Fuel Filter on my 06 300c

I am amazed at how terrible I am at finding answers on the forum. For whatever reason, even the simplest of answers seems to elude me. I am trying to determine if my 06 300c (5.7 liter) has a fuel filter that can be serviced but searching the word “fuel filter” doesn't really return Me any Straight forward results. The only thing I can find is that there is a serviceable fuel pump/pumps (is there 2? One on each side?) located in the gas tank. I have done many repairs through the 13 + years of owning my 300 but never encountered a fuel filter. Maybe someone can help with my questions in regard to this.

1. Is there a fuel filter that can be serviced? If so where is it?
2. If the fuel pumps in the gas tank are also filters, Can they be serviced or cleaned? Or do they need to be replaced completely?
3. If I had the Gas tank replaced via a Chrysler recall about 6 years ago, does this mean they most likely replaced the fuel pumps/filters also?

Thanks for any help!

The filter and regulator is built into the unit in the passenger side of the tank. Dont think it can be serviced without replacing that unit. Dont know the answer to 3.

You'll have to disconnect the wires and hoses from the pump that are in the tank on the driver side to remove the unit on the passenger side.

1. As said above, yes there is a filter of sorts and it can be serviced if you want to remove the fuel pump from the fuel tank. The filter is on the fuel pump.
2. See No. 1. It does not need to be completely replaced.
3. They WOULD NOT replace the fuel pump unless you paid for it and they more than likely would not have cleaned the filter.

Why are you worried about a contaminated fuel filter? Have you been running some "crap" fuel or something? If you run a top tier fuel from reputable stations, you certainly shouldn't have any problems.

The car is not running as smooth as it should, Feels a bit weak and hesitates on exceleration, it will stall randomly, sometimes at idle and sometimes while driving, sometimes not. There is also a strong odor coming from the exhaust which might indicate its running rich or lean, I’m not sure. I believe may be improper fuel air mixture but I don’t know for sure. I’m trying to rule out all the things that could be impacting this. The only mods are an aftermarket air intake and American thunder exhaust but other than that the engine is stock. I have never physically cleaned anything other than the throttle body. I replaced the EGR valve about 4 years ago. New air sensor about 2 years ago and I just ordered a map sensor. My valve cover gaskets are starting to leak so I will clean the fuel injectors soon while installing new valve cover gaskets. Just trying to rule out things. Some years ago I had a more severe stalling problem and this lead me to the gas tank recall which dealer replaced. Stalling mostly went away after but not completely. I was told the ECM might be a culprit if all else failed but sometimes I go a while with no stalling so I just don’t know. Oil and plugs have always been changed regularly but current plugs are due for changing. I also have a diy oil catch can that I empty now and then so it appears to be doing its job.

Hmm. Crank shift position sensor? Mine didn't give me a code for months, aside for random miss fires. It would also randomly stall and all sorts of other odd stuff.

There's a bunch of stuff that can cause your symptoms but, if you're getting the rich or lean fuel mixture smell, it could be your upstream O2 Sensors. Have you checked for codes with a good quality diagnostic scanner, one that can read and check all modules? Among other things, check the long and short trims. How many miles on the vehicle and have the O2's ever been changed? If the plugs are due changing do that too.

Also, check the EGR Valve operation. Symptoms are usually along the lines of.....low speed surging, rough sometimes stalling idle, poor performance and fuel economy. If the valve is open at all when it shouldn't be you'll get roughness. If the pintle is sticking at various points, the symptoms will vary from minor to major and if the valve is open too much when it shouldn't be, it will stall. Again, a good scanner can statically check the operation of the valve. If you don't have access to a scanner, and you suspect the EGR Valve again, you may just want to change it. They run about $50 and take an hour or less to change. Also, I believe most of them are made in China now and some folks have encountered bad ones right out of the box.

Good luck on your search and please keep us posted.

Sounds a lot like mine a few months ago besides the stalling. It ended up being the upstream O2 on the driver's side. I waited too long to get mine fixed and destroyed my cat, might want to at least look into them to be sure it isn't. It ran like crap for a while before it threw a code.

I just typed a huge reply and lost it completely when I hit reply to thread, Uggg... No sensor to use but no check engine lights firing. I get an occasional check engine but it usually goes away quickly. 02 sensors never even occurred to me and they are OG from the factory so I think this might be the culprit. I have 150,000 on 06 that I purchased in 07 and I don’t think 02 sensors have ever been replaced. CATS are original as well. I have had few repairs to exhaust near cat’s and 02 sensors where pipe scraps to fix leaks only. Then the American thunder exhaust about 2 years ago. Installer was a performance shop and they did not indicate an issue with old cats and 02 sensors at the time.

Thanks all, I have some things to work on now and ill try and report back with findings but 02 sensors sound like they might be culprit based on them being originals. The crankshaft position sensor has never been done also so Ill look into doing this as well.

A good diagnostic scanner can check the synchronization of the cam/crank sensors and will indicate if there is a problem with either of them. There is really no need to change either, just to change it. If you do change either though, you should, using a good scanner, run the synchronization routine. In most cases just changing them will work, but they may not be "quite" right.

That same good scanner can check fuel trims and O2 Sensor voltages which will give you a pretty good idea if there is a problem. If you're going to replace the O2 Sensors, I'd highly recommend you get the OE ones which, for the early LX's, are NTK's made by NGK. Chrysler vehicles are somewhat notorious for being very picky about the brand of O2 Sensors that are installed. Been there, done that.

Nice! I didn't even know that. Thanks, magnuman!
