Multi Displacement System

Does the Multi Displacement System operate smoothly as reported by several of the car magazines? Has anyone been able to detect the deactivation when accelerating or cruising?

In my test drive, I could NOT detect it.

I believe that I can feel the MDS going FROM four to eight cylinders. It's just a slight shudder, but I'm fairly certain that's what it is. While crusing at 60 increase the gas just a little bit and you'll feel it kick in. You can also see the difference in the average MPG if it is reset just before doing this. It's not a terrible thing, but I swear I can feel it...

My dealer told me that MDS is disactivated until the customer tells them to activate it (sounds wierd), that might EXPLAIN why we didn't feel it on the test drive.

Don't believe eveything the dealer tells you. For the most part, they know a lot less about the car than we do. I swear they make stuff up as they go along. Kind of like John Kerry.

Maybe they believe they've been chosen by god to give us misinformation.

muti displacement

I believe that I feel it. Lets say I take off on a light and increasing speed up to 40 mph when you take your foot off of the gas the car instantly kinda throws you slightly forward. It doesn't go slower or anything and is barely noticable. I know it sounds crazy, because if you accel fast in any car and then take your foot off of course you have a tendency you lean forward, but this is a little different. You have to have drive one to understand. But then again not sure if the car is just so fast that when you take off, you naturally fall forward because of physics.

What is it that I hear when I'm driving like 20-40 mph. It sounds like a four cylinder ticking sound.

Sounds like your dealer is setting you up for another "add on" cost if you try to
purchase your vehicle from them.

I can see it now:

Dealer: "Why yes, that new 5.7 Hemi powered Magnum R/T does come with the MDS system
so the car can get 20 percent better gas mileage, so you can save on gas."

You: "Wow, thats great, I love to save money."

Dealer: "Oh, but wait, we have to activate it for you. We will have to add an
additional $500.00 to the purchase price of the car. But, thats a bargain compared
to what you are going to save in gas money over the life of the car. You should do
it!! Its worth it!"

You: "Oh, really. I thought it came with the car. I have to pay for it? Everything
I have read, every article, every manual, every blog, every forum, even Dodge's own
website says the MDS is standard on all 5.7 Hemi engines straight from the factory.
Heck, even all the Chrysler factory stuff says it, as well as all the Chrysler websites
as well as every single brochure I have seen about the 5.7 Hemi powered cars."

Dealer: "No, you have to pay US to activated it for you. But its worth it. Would
we LIE to you?"

With the stock exhaust, I NEVER felt it on my 300C, nor did I ever hear it.

Once I replaced my exhaust with the Magnaflow cat-back, I can hear the difference
in the exhaust note when its in 4 cyl mode. But, even then, I can't actually "feel" it
switch back and forth. I can just "hear" it.

Did you notice this thread is from May of 2004? It has been around longer than you have and you are an old hand.

You can hear it w/ aftermarket exhaust... Otherwise, you'll never know it's there. In 18,000 miles, I swear I never knew if it was on or off. They claim 0.04 seconds for the down cylinders to come back online, and I believe it.

It does not (can not) be activated or deactivated by a dealer, it's just plain there. If you want it out, you have to change some internals and some programming.
