Power Folding Mirrors on my 300C - Trying to do it

Hi everyone,

after some months of searching across the internet and on 300Cs Service Manuals I'm trying to do it.

RHD is for Right Hand Drive
LHD is for Left Hand Drive

The theory:

Power Folding Mirrors are available only on 300Cs with Memory system that are RHD.

On 2006, 2007 and 2008 MYs (maybe 2008 is a bit different, don't know on 2009 and 2010) we have the following wiring diagram on the Mirros Switch:

As you can see on the left, connections 5 and 6 inside the Mirror Switch are wired to Pins 1 and 10 on the Mirror Switch connector.

Pins 1 and 10 are ONLY available/used on RHD 300Cs for Power Folding function.
LHD 300Cs use a different Mirror Switch and Pins 1 and 10 are not used.

On the Drivers Mirror side:

The problem is that on LHD Pins 8 and 11 are used for the Auto DIM function of the Mirror glass, while on RHD Pins 8 and 11 are used for the Power Folding function.

What we need:

1) A new Mirror switch that has the Power Folding position (Knob turning 180°)

I buyed mine, code 04602789AA, from a German seller, the cost was about 20 Euro shipped:

2) The Left and Right RHD Mirrors with Power Folding function.

I buyed mines used on eBay UK, the cost (for both) was about 250 Euro shipped.
From time to time you can find some.

3) Some wires to make the whole thing work.

I'm buying some 10-12 meters of wires.

What to do:

1) Replace the Mirror Switch with the new one.

2) Mod the Left RHD Mirror:
-A) Replace the Glass with the Heated and Auto DIM one (from my LHD one).
-B) Reconnect Pins 8 and 11 from Power Folding motor to the Auto DIM.
-C) Add 2 wires to the Power Folding motor.

3) Add the wires missing:
-A) From the Mirror Switch to the added wires on the Left RHD Mirror.
-B) From the Mirror Switch to the Right RHD Mirror.

Extra:

I'm looking to add also an auto Power Folding Function when exiting the car, still looking on how to do this.

---------------------------------------

I'm waiting some time and some good and warm weather to start with the mod.

---------------------------------------

Here are 2 Videos I made today with my father holding the Mirror.

-

---------------------------------------

Here is the Left Mirror (Driver) Preparation:

Removed the glass from the Mirror (followed this procedure: http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a10...sideMirror.jpg):

Opened back and cut white (pin 8) and grey (pin 11) wires (the ones that make Power Folding work)

Passed 2 new wires (orange and white) inside the Mirror to have Auto DIM still working

Passed 2 new wires (green and violet) in the bracket for Power Folding

Soldered white to white and orange to grey on the wires going to the connector
Soldered green to white and violet to grey on the wires going to the Power Folding Motor

Reassembled, ready to mount the Auto DIM Glass and go on the car

---------------------------------------

Here is the material I'm using:

From left:

New Mirror Switch

Left Door new AddOn Connector (Male and Female)

Right Door new AddOn Connector (Male and Female)

Left Mirror new Connector (Male and Female)

Wire

Still Missing the Wire Cover

---------------------------------------

Left Door Preparation:

This morning started to work on the Left Door.

Left Door Panel removed:

Rear of the Panel

Old Mirror Switch on Panel

Old and New Mirror Switches

New Mirror Switch, had to mod it to make it work, removing the 2 corners, see green arrows

May be the Mod to the new Mirror switch is not easily understandable, so here is (maybe) a better description:

As you can see I've removed the 2 upper corners, otherwise the connector would not fit in the new Mirror Switch

New Mirror Switch installed on Door Panel

Preparing the "new" Mirror adding Auto Dim Glass, FAILURE
The LHD Mirror Glass with Auto DIM is FAT compared to the RHD non Auto DIM one, it fits, but it has not enough space to move, had to put on the original RHD one.

Added the connector to the Power Folding wires

Added new wires with cover from Mirror Power Folding Connector, from Mirror Switch, to out door, see green arrows

Wires out from the speaker hole and preparing to go out

Wires taken out

At this point I bridged the wires out of the door and was ready to test, FAILURE

Had 12V on the Mirror Power Folding Connector, but the Mirror didn't fold/unfold... Strangely I had not enough current.

So I added a 12V wire from the DOOR CONTROL UNIT to the Mirror Switch, see green arrows

Also added a little 2A Fuse for security, see red arrow

So here is the 1st test:

And here the test after reassembling the door:

---------------------------------------

I will keep the post updated.

In theory would you be able to do this with chargers and magnums also? Beans to you for trying!

Nice work so far... glad to see someone is finally going through with trying this.

Id like to think all this info is going to help me someday, but I dont know how different my situation (and most others, for that matter) will be since we dont have the auto-dim function. Not sure if that will make it easier or require yet another pioneer to tackle that project as well....?

Anyhow, good luck with this endeavor. I hope it goes smoothly for you and you have good news to report back.

Magnum and 300C are "TWINS" so I think that it's exactly the same on them.
Don't know for chargers, but think it may be very similar.

In the Theory part I say what's the current situation, it's not a limitation for others.
The used pins on switch and mirrors are always the same, you can find the proper mirrors and do the mod, all the "extra" functions like Auto DIM will just not work.

Thank you!

Have you done the Auto Power Folding function on exit from the car?

Was thinking to use the the KEY-IN or KEY-OUT pin on the Ignition Switch to pilot a Relay.

Any other idea?

I'll probably test the use of pin 3 of the ignition switch to have an ACC under key working.
The cig lighter keeps powered until you open the door, pin 3 on ignition switch should have power only when key is turned on.
This morning asked my dealer to try to find a right Mirror Glass Heated and with Audo DIM.
If he can find one will put it on
