Charger RT 06 vs 09 Power difference

Ok Im seeing that the 09 Chargers come with 368 crank HP and 395 lbs torque.

The 06's were rated at 345 and 390.

My question is, what did Dodge do to increase the HP? Anyone know as I don't see any obvious changes, so I have to assume it's the portings, etc.

They didn't port the heads... they redesigned them.

The 5.7 has a higher compression ratio and significantly smaller combustion chamber than the older 5.7 heads.

The sad part is the the regular R/T's got a lame rear end ratio, while only certain versions of the 5.7 got the 3.06 rear end (and higher in certain cases with the challenger iirc)

Ok makes sense. I was out of the loop for a while so didn't hear about this until now.

It's good to see they did that. Adding the Shorty's definitely will add an additional 10-15. I need to go check out this new intake and see these heads.

Now I got the bug to look into getting new heads and intake for my 06.

actually the whole cam is rotated, so all the lobes get the same degree of movement. And it DOES change the timing of the event relative to the crank so technically it is VVT as well.

And sorry, no SRT shorties, but a greatly improved exhaust manifold.

And it's not the small improvements in PEAK power, but the huge amount of power 'under the curve' that makes the new 5.7 Eagle a fantastic motor.

hack99 doesn't look like much now, but drinking milk does wonders
Our '09 Daytona seems to be as fast as our '09 Challenger, if not faster. I'm not sure, but it feels quicker. I've done 0-60 in them and the Challenger just edges it out by 2/10s, but feels slower. Not sure how accurate the EVIC is these. Just wondering, not trying to highjack, but aren't these the same engines and gearing?

not sure about the gearing, but I am sure about the unreliability of a 'butt dyno' for testing.

I used to have a 70 goat with a 455 in it that really felt kinda slow, but would rip a low 12 in street tires at almost 120mph trap!

Almost anyone who rode in the boggy low revving car thought it was slow. Made me a lot of money.

If you want to go W/those heads, you are either going to have to get the "09" pistons to lower CR or get the combustion chambers opened up.

If it where me, & there was a lot of miles on the block, I would check on the price of the stock "09" pistons & freshen up the block.

As long as the cylinder walls are good, (they probably are) a hone of the cylinder walls, new "09" pistons/rings along W/some new main & rod inserts would give you a fresh rotating assmbly.

Change the cam & istal headers while you are @ it & you will have a real beast.

the 09+ is not rated at 390 hp, unless its in a Ram. the cars did not get the active intake, and so they max out at 375hp. 360-375.

One other thing to note if not already done so- you cannot retrofit the VCT system to a non-VCT engine. The block is different to accomidate the oil control solenoid and passages going to the cam, and the cam is different too for the oil passages that go through it to the phaser type cam sprocket.
