Piston help. Need help ASAP!!!
Just got done taking the heads off a car and this popped up:
![]() What do we do now??? I don't have the facility to do this work. It appears to have been like this for quite a while because there is carbon build up where the break is, not sure if the nitrous on a stock 6.1 would have caused this? There is no damage to the head but were putting ported heads on so I don't want to see the new heads get damaged. Should I continue putting the cam and heads in and have him drive it easy until he can get the motor pulled? Someone call me or something that knows a lot about this situation please. 864-982-2078 Jason

Seems NHDave has the exact same issue right now. I'm not sure if I would continue with the new heads on there. Could be catastrophic if more ring land breaks off. Just my .02

I wouldn't even bother to put the heads and cam in. What did the valves look like? Unfortunately it's time to pull the motor.
This isn't the first time seeing piston problems and it willnt be the last.

Probably the chunk is in his catalyic converter.

It's not even my car, it is a guy from the forums though. It a SRT8 that was spraying 150 shot. I don't have the means to pull the entire motor here and the guy lives over an hour from me.
Do you have to pull the heads to pull the engine out, like if he drives it home easily then gets a shop to do the piston swap?

Your taking a big risk... Just stop. Let him tow the car home. At the point that your at I would get it pulled and get the block freshened up... it makes no sense to put heads back on that... If thats what your gonna HAVE to do just stick the stockers back on.

Does he have AAA? I would have it towed to the shop he's having the engine pulled and freshened up/swapped at without driving it anymore. But, I'm not an expert by any means and Michgan Hemi did my install so I learned as we went but personally I wouldn't risk those new heads or trashing the old ones if they aren't already damaged. The towing bill an hour away would be much less...

It's easier to pull the motor with the heads off but its not neccassary. He's taking a risk of catastrophic failure driving it anymore and could destroy many more things. As far as rebuilding it, he has a few options, theres the stroker route, theres the forged stock displacement route, and if i recall the cheapest option so far i think they have just a forged piston route and keep everything else rods and crank stock. I'm pretty sure FRI has info on that.

I would freak if I saw that. I still have extended warranty on my car does he. wonder if they would cover that. I would put it back together without the new cam and heads and figure out the warranty or what to do. I wouldn't drive much on that motor though. I will say I think the juice did it...

I wouldn't risk damaging the head or wasting labor putting them back on when they are going to be pulled again. Have him toe his car home, that is your best bet.

If he replaces just that piston with a stock one it would be a good idea to file the end gap on all the top rings. The top of the piston breaks because the top ring gets hot and expands until the weakest link fails, top of piston.
