I also am having a hard time believing that water in the fuel would have caused major failure. It "typically" makes it run very poor, but a simple flush cleans it right out. It can be bit different when you get water in diesel fuel, as the injection pumps are sometimes fuel lubricated.

That sucks though!!
If you got water in your diesel it would cost a heck of a lot more to fix. A friend of mine whiped out his Cummins powered Dodge dually transporting a boat from Maine to Florida. He had to pay to get the boat hauled from North Carolina to Fla, pay to tow his truck to Maine plus $15,000 to fix the truck. Nearly bankrupted him. The gas station in NC is fighting him in court not to pay a cent. Yes water can kill a gas motor, I had a 3L Ford/Mazda V6 get badly damaged by water, the valves looked like a cutting torch had cut into them.

gas stations also like to water down the fuel to get more out it and make more money especially when gas prices start going up its a sleezy thing to do but around my neck of the woods it was getting a little out of control till it made the local news and they started cracking down on them.
having water in your fuel can be catastrophic! it can lean your car out under wot

This has to be no-name small stations. Every major brand has central monitoring of water in their tanks that sets off alarms locally at the station and sends a signal to corporate that there is a problem. Chevron, Mobil, etc. don't want their name ruined by a franchise station trying to cheat the system.

The Fallen doesn't look like much now, but drinking milk does wonders
UPDATE:
Murphy USA is sending me a check for the repairs. So hopefully I'll get my Charger back sometime this week.

It might be a good idea to get gas at a good known gas station and pay a little more for the gallon. I had a similar situation but it didn't do that much damage to my car. My car ran like **** for a day or so before I was able to top it of with premium 93 + octane booster and it was running a lot better. I will never buy gas from a low brand gas station.

I recently heard that BP (maybe only in NC) is adding more methanol to the gas and this is supposedly causing problems.....Isn't methanol used to boost octain?

I just picked my car up late last night after work. So far so good. Hopefully I'll be done with that headache. They took their sweet time sending the payment for the repairs, but at least they paid for it.
