Dodge Details the Demon Suspension

In the 7[SUP]th[/SUP] installment of the Dodge Challenger SRT Demon teaser program, the company discusses the suspension setup of the new drag-ready road car in a video and press release titled 'Third Law'. The title likely refers to Newton's Third Law of Motion, which states that for every action, there is an equal and opposite re-action, as the press release discusses the revised suspension setup of the new Demon and how that will improve the launching efforts of the next monster Mopar muscle car.

Today's announcement points out that while the current Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat has an adjustable, adaptive suspension setup that allows for a nice balance of launching, handling and ride quality, the Challenger SRT Demon will have a system which is designed more for launching with the new Drag Mode - while still providing good handling and ride characteristics for when the owners aren't on the drag strip.

Basically, the high tech suspension setup in the Dodge Challenger SRT Demon will allow the driver to set pick Drag Mode for the best weight transfer, the best traction and the best short times at the track, but when they leave the track, they can pick a mode that offers better settings for on-road driving.

This has been achieved by adding new, drag-tuned front and rear Bilstein dampers, a 35% lower front spring rate, a 28% lower rear spring rate, a 75% lower rate front sway bar and a 44% lower rate rear sway bar. Next, the adaptive suspension system has been retuned for these new component, in addition to the new Drag Mode, so when coupled with the drag race-ready suspension bits - the 2018 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon will almost surely be the hardest launching production road car ever.

This is all a first for a production road car, as no other vehicle has been offered with a factory drag strip-ready setup like this, while still being street legal in the same basic form that it runs down the track.

Finally, in addition to some figures on the new suspension setup, Dodge offered up some mystery information on the 2018 Challenger SRT Demon which you can check out below. I've not been able to figure out what it means, but anyone on the site who does have an idea is encouraged to share your thoughts with the group in the forum!

In the meantime, check out the newest Demon teaser video, titled 'Third Law'.

In the press release it lists the following. Someone care to interpret for the rest of us......

Hardware:
  • 35 percent lower rate front springs/28 percent lower rate rear springs
  • 75 percent lower rate hollow front sway bar/44 percent lower rate rear sway bar
  • Drag-tuned Bilstein Adaptive Damping Shocks

Software:
  • Rear = F/F and Front = F/S
  • F/F - F/S maintained @ wide open throttle (WOT)
  • F/F - F/F < WOT
  • Traction control disabled/ESC maintained

Result:
  • 13.5=575@500

From the video. its doing a Pre-launch rear squat and nose rise prior to the power being delivered. This will cause a weight transfer aft increasing off the line grip. Old " Ramchargers" drag team pioneered that concept by having a very high front end, forward moved rear axles and lower rears. But it was fixed, where this is adaptive ride height control. Probably taking some parts from Jeep ride height systems

Control arms and spindle are supposed to be lightened pieces. So maybe they are aluminum or something other than steel.

Saint Jean Industries already makes aluminum suspension for Pacifica and even the 2017 hellcat 5 spoke lightweight wheel. Likely that they are supplying lighter aluminum parts and 18" wheel for demon. http://www.st-ji.com/en/news-award-fca-2017.html

Don't think that is a Demon. Flares should be smooth and those tires are something different. That could just be a vendor (Nitto) test car.

Look at the tires on this pic.
