Mods Face Off Result: AirHammer Intake

Mods Face Off Result: AirHammer Intake

This test consisted of testing the AirHammer Intake on a completely stock 2006 300C, an extensively modified 2005 300C, and a 2006 SRT8 Magnum at the Mods Face Off 5 (MFO5).

Mod Tested: AirHammer Intake by Hammer Motorsports
Date: 10/12/06 - 10/13/06
Dyno Location: SVS R&D, Sacramento CA
Track Location: Sacramento Raceway, Sacramento CA

***Remember to always review and keep in mind the Mods Face Off Testing Methodology Q&A while reviewing these results.***

The Good:
  • For the first time in the history of the MFO events, we have a group of intakes that deliver significant performance increases on a stock 5.7L; and the AirHammer topped them all by producing average of 9.9hp and 8.8trq over the stock air box!
  • The sound... oh my, the sound. Stand in front or to the side of this thing as it opens up at WOT and you're going to need to cover your ears. Far and away the loudest intake we tested
  • Without a doubt, this was the fan favorite at the MFO5.
The Bad:
  • We consistently showed the large S&B filter out performed the small S&B filter; the large just won't fit on a Magnum or 300c (however it will fit on a Charger). All is not lost however, as S&B is working on a small filter with a 1" pleat... this filter will (not only fit the Magnum and 300C but) will actually have more surface area than the large filter we tested
  • The sound... this intake WILL remind you its there every time you drive the car. This is not a subtle mod.
  • Its still a prototype; not only does it look like it but its also not yet available for purchase.
The Numbers:

The Graphs:

These two pulls closely follow the averages for the entire set. This is average vs average, not best vs best.

COMPARISONS:

Intake STP Horsepower Comparison - Stock 5.7L

Intake STP Torque Comparison - Stock 5.7L

Intake STP Horsepower Comparison - Modded 5.7

Intake STP Torque Comparison - Modded 5.7

Manometer readings:

The Pictures & Video:
AirHammer on Bruno's stock 300C

*******THIS VIDEO WAS FOR FUN ONLY!!! THE NUMBERS RESULTING FROM IT ARE NOT INCLUDED IN THE RESULTS ABOVE. THIS WAS JUST TO HAVE SOME FUN AND ENJOY THE ROAR!!!*******

My Personal Impression:
The numbers don't lie. The AirHammer is a very promising design, and its exciting to realize that OEMs are now starting to deliver on the promises that have been made for the last year, especially when it comes to a stock setup.

The AirHammer is not without its issues however. Looking down the barrel of the horn shows an approx 1/16" to 1/8" lip where the rolled steel meets the mandrel bent tube. I personally would like to see that lip removed, or at least minimized. Also, we showed that the small filter of the prototype really is a restriction as it brings the numbers right back to stock levels. The general consensus was that the small filter hamstrung the performance of the design. However, this issue should be removed when a 1" pleated filter is made available. Also, this is only a restriction on 300's and Magnums; the Chargers can support that large filter.

Using the manometer revealed some interesting facts as well. The stock box pulled right around 5.5" of water. The AirHammer, when combined with the large filter was far and away the leader in this category as it pulled 1.2" of water; net effect is an engine that basically is breathing much easier. That effect can be seen in the graph above as the torque and power curves are significantly steeper throughout the power curve (aka a harder pulling car).

Assuming a 1" pleated filter becomes available, and the AirHammer ships with it, this intake is a winner. Until then, and if I didn't have a Charger, I would wait.

Thanks for the test results! This proves that what I heard and felt when I tried it, was not imagined. Solid proof that Hammers induction system rocks!!! Sweet intake, Buddy!

Bill, I honestly doubt that the small margin by which the 6.5" inch filter outflows the 12" inch filter will produce a measurable gain with our engines. Further, I'd expect the 12" filter to win any "ear music" competitions.

The intimidation factor for anyone looking at the two certainly favors the 12" filter as well.

is that a fair comparison test with the airhammer intake sticking out of the open hood? how did this intake compare to matt's intake sitting out of the open hood?

WELL NOW!!

I am certainly joyful over this blessed turn of events! I was designing the AirHammer to not only be a producer of power but an intimidator of sound!

I remember when I first put it on my Charger I was stunned that the sound of the intake was actually partially drowning out the exhausts!

I want to thank all of those that are involved in the testing of the AirHammer and especially to Meister who believed in my design enough to set his new landspeed record with it installed.

I am sure that the new S&B filter will even out the playing field as compared to the original humongous 12" that I originally used.

With the new filter in place and the hood closed I am absolutely confident that the same results will appear!
Since Hammer MotorSports is now a vendor (snappy intro writeup coming as soon as I catch my breath) I proudly submit the following:

Here is how to get that awesome bit of funktastical Hemilogical motomajic!

350.00 unpolished
75.00 for polishing to a mirror shine. This just pays my polisher.

No tomfoolery with that here! I grit my teeth over folks that try to sleaze that last profit dollar from ya!

It is made from Stainless Steel and is US made in a US shop with US materials by US citizens!
NOTE:This will NOT fit AWD's OR V-6's! But that is soon to change. Everbody else is good to go.

I would paint them but color matching is problematic at best. They are easy to paint and with a good quality paint, it will look fine for a looong time!

When the AirHammer was in Meister's car on the dyno I could not believe the sound coming from that gigantic filter. It was louder than the exhaust!!! Obviously it eliminates any bottleneck of on the intake side of things. Now I'm wondering what would happen with the AirHammer and exhaust cutouts. That intake/exhaust combo would probably be heard 20 miles away, but I bet it would have significant HP gains.

Don't go there or you'll get bad reps from all the REV's followers, like I got for expressing my scepticism in the other thread when I said there was nothing amazing about another tube and big filter that is just like frankentake and AFE2.
And to discuss your point, not only is the intake getting more air this way, since the hood is open, after all this is how we drive, right, with the hood open , but there is no heat soak in that situation either, 2 things that probably made the numbers bigger than they are, but don't mention this to anyone or we'll be banned for not saying congrats to rev and all his friends.

The power steering line makes a upward loop on the AWD's that it doesn't do on the RWD. It sticks out enough to interfere with the intake.
