"Mango Express" Breaks into 12s N/A with a stock 5.7 cam

On 4/14/07, The "Mango Express" broke into the 12s @ Old Bridge Raceway Park, Englishtown, NJ. This was N/A W/a stock 5.7 cam!

The picture is a bit blurry, here are the #s:
    • 60'---------1.837
    • 1/8 E.T.----8.296
    • 1/8 MPH----83.87 MPH
    • 1/4 E.T.---12.987
    • 1/4 MPH---105.21 MPH

As most of you regulars know, I am very deliberate & do a lot of research before doing mods & I do not like to do "shotgun mods". (too many mods @ once)

The latest stages since my last outing when I turned 13.405 @ have included the following mods/evaluation.

    Late October early November "06":
    • I adapted Erik's stock SRT cat-back
    • Fabbed & installed a Frankentake III
    • Installed a 6.1 manifold/injectors via phenolic adaptors to the Mopar Performance heads on the "Mango Express".
Evaluation: I finished up the 6.1 manifold installation @ 7:30 PM on the Friday evening prior to the "Frozen Balls & Bearings" shootout in November. I left 3 hours later on the 6 1/2 hour drive to Englishtown, NJ W/little more than a short "shakedown cruise" to make sure everthing was buttoned up. The results were rather dismal as the best time I was able to post was the 13.549 that broke me out in the semi finals.

A follow up dyno run W/the required A/F ratio readout revealed that the 6.1 injectors where running @ mid-low 10s A/F ratio killing power @ the maximum torque point. Later, a change to the 5.7 injectors yielded a 12 HP increase that moved peak HP up to 5600 RPM holding fairly flat to 6000 RPMs. The A/F ratio was in the 12.3 range, but was still dropping @ peak torque, then leaning out @ maximum HP. The 6.1 MAP sensor does not work well W/the 5.7 computor. The 6.1 injectors, although running 2 full points richer, were much more stable than the 5.7 injectors.

Conclusion: The 6.1 manifold shows great potential on the large intake port runners of the Mopar Performance heads W/a potential HP increase of perhaps 20 -25 HP W/the appropriate mods/tuning. The 6.1 MAP sensor will not produce ideal results even W/5.7 injectors. An adjustable fuel signal programmer is needed. The Split Second PSC1-003 was purchased for this reason. The PSC1-003 will be used to program the 6.1 injectors to a flat 12.8 A/F ratio across the RPM range @ WOT.

    March-mid Aprill "07":
    • "Bastin Bob's for SRT8s only" installed in place of the stock resonators on the SRT cat-back.
    • Reworked the phenolic adaptors for better flow.
    • Installed an AFE Stage II CAI
    • Had a Pro Torque 2800 RPM stall convertor installed by Tony @ Shippan Auto Repair located in Stamford, CT
    • Installed a custon flashed ECU from B&G, 6800 RPM limit, custom fuel maps, maximum ignition timing advance, MDS enabled W/maximum torque management reduction. (Many thanks to Meister for the paramater input via PM!)
    • Installed M&H Racemaster P325/45R 17 drag radials on Centerline "Billet Series Hammer" custom wheels. 17" X 9 1/2" 5 X 115mm W/6" backspace
Evaluation: A short road test W/Tony revealed the TC to be invisible under normal driving condition but there when the pedal is mashed. Although the TC is labeled 2800 RPM stall, the brake stall is actually about 3200 RPM. Again, it is not apparent that the stall is higher by almost 900 RPM higher than the stock TC under normal driving conditions. This was W/the stock tune. I later loaded the Superchips tune W/custom trans setting. The ECU was then removed & the B&G flashed ECU installed.

The custom B&G flash turned the roaring 5.7 W/the 6.1 intake manifold into a snarling shreiking monster! The ruduced TM makes the 2nd gear shift slam me back in the seat. The 6800 RPM limit W/O limp mode allows me to "Autostick" the 1-2 shift @ 5500 RPM for the 6300 RPM shift, the 2-3 shift is "Autostick" shifted @ 6000 RPM for a 6200 RPM shift point. No drama other than the adrenelin rush of torque & slamming, positive shifts. No need for a TCM upgrade here!

The fat 28" M&H drag radials, when warmed up properly, launch the 4200# brick like a missile, raising the nose & slamming me into the seat all the way through 1st & 2nd gear.

The 325 M&H drag radials handle the increased power if they are burned up in the box properly. I experienced problems later in the day W/traction problems & ESP intervening due to poor burn out technique & improper ESP mod manipulation that cost me over .3 ET, 1 MPH trap speed & a better than 3rd place finish that I did acheive.

So, what is next? I am stil trying to get a cam that will move the power band up 500 RPM W/mds enabled. I have a Crane 216 in hand but I am trying to get FRI to grind a cam to my specifiacations. W/the performance that the car is acheiving W/the stock cam, I believe that the proper MDS compatible grind I can get @ least 60 -75 more HP. All of the mods in place are designed for a 3500 -6500 RPM max TQ/HP power band while the stock cam is for a 0-5400 RPM power band. I also am going to start from scratch W/the phenolc adadtors. There is yet some power left in a bit different design. The PSC1-003 will dial in the perfect A/F ratios across all RPM/drivavbility range W/the 6.1 injectors.

I look for the N/A "Mango Express" to get into 12.5s before the summer is over. If the gear ratio change computer mod I am working on comes to fruition, 3.08-3.10 axle gears would probably reduce E.T. by another 2/10ths.
Now, if I sprayed a 100 shot of dope on top of that?

    Stay tuned!

really nice run!! im sure your numbers will only get better.
but don't forget to tell them that you almost took the car apart to remove any thing that was not welded to the car to get the lbs down.
at first i seen him remove his back seats then anthing in the trunk boy he made sure he hit the 12's or he might of took the doors off next lol
PowerWagon i love what you did with your intake and still stock cam you rock .

In retrospect, I will no longer remove anthing from the back seat or trunk as the weight on top of & to the rear of the back axle can only help traction.

Now, If I were to lose another 70#s on top of the 40# I have already lost since the 1st of the year.

Nice write up Dan, this is going to be one hell of a summer!

I noticed the same 3200 foot stall on my "2800 rpm" rated Pro Torque TC and considered it a bonus. Interesting to hear you have the same result.

I am curious, what launch technique did you use with those big tires?

Before I started screwing up later in the day, the launch was a real adrenelin rush.

That muther would just rear up and shoot out of the box.

    I sure I can get into 1.7 60s W/some more practice/technique.

I can't wait to get the cam grind I want!

It was good to see you again, Dan. Congrats on continuing to best yourself perpetually, and welcome to the 12 Second Club!

It's only a matter of time before the mid 12's on a NA 5.7 will be commonplace. My money's on you being one of the first.

It sure does. I had a little BMW 2 seater try me from an 80 MPH kickdown. He held in there but I slowly pulled him up to about 120 MPH when I had to get out of it. I had back off. I had him by enough to change lanes in front of him.

From a 65 MPH kick down I crushed him when sthe Mango dropped into 2nd gear.
And this was W/my drag radials, tools, luggage, etc in the back.

He gave me a big $hit eatin" grin & a thumbs up both times when he came up beside me after playing.
