    Cheap insurance in NJ??

    Hi guys,

I'm trying to help out a new co-worker who recently moved into the building where I also rent an apartment. He just got his SSN the other day and is now car-shopping and of course need insurance for that. He's been in the country for around a month only as he came from one of my company's overseas offices.

He tried calling all the usual suspects - Geico, Allstate, State Farm, Progressive etc. but all are pretty expensive... well, I don't know if they are for him but it's much more than I pay. He's 23, single and has zero credit if that makes a difference. He is buying liability insurance only.

For a 2004 Neon he was quoted $1400 for six months.
For a 2003 Elantra he was quoted $1300 for six months.

I guess he's looking at something which would cost around $1000 for six months. Is an older car cheaper to insure? (doubt it)

Does anyone know of any other companies or agencies who may be able to get him a cheaper rate or can you recommend a car which is dirt cheap on insurance? He is looking for a cheap four cylinder car - around $4k.

Any input is appreciated. Thanks guys.

Best and Cheapest is New Jersey Manufacturers - IF you qualify.
    Next would be AIG.

These are the two best (I can almost guarantee).
RIP nhDave - Never forgotten, my friend

I need to get that insurance... Ernie, I'm assuming you meant Esurance.com as that link doesn't make a lot of sense, lol.

My brother in law pays $1600 for full coverage on a 2005 Mazda 6 so maybe $1300 isn't as bad as I thought. Still, not peanuts.

    Thanks

Hate to tell you but he has all the bad factors against him.
    1. He doesn't have 3 years of driving experince.
    2. He doesn't have 3 years of consecutive Insurance.
    3. He's 23
    4. He's single.
    5. Credit score shows good responsibilties to the insurance company.
I looked into it for my newphew who has all the factors this young man does.

The insurance company looks at his profile and they think there's a Very good chance he will be in some sort of claim.

See if the company or Union if he's in one can help. My local has an interest with a insurance company to offer better rates.

Yeah, that's the problem. He's had a driver's license for several years, but that doesn't count for crap in a new country. He basically couldn't be worse off, like you said.

NJM is the best co, but it's certainly NOT the cheapest & they usually will not take somebody in off the street, they won't take anybody without a referral from a policyholder. That being said, AIG should be looked into, they are good and inexpensive. Or try AAA motor club, they may be able to get him in on their program as a member.

When Motor Club of America pulled out of N.J. a few years ago,I was going to go with AIG. The rates were good,But my ins.agent hooked me up with Mercury ins.. They gave me better rates.

AIG is the cheapest in NJ, but only by a few dollars over Geico...and that's with the discount through my wifes union. Dodge offers dicounted rates through AIG as well...if he just bought the car. NJCure used to be a lot cheaper than everone else, but with recent changes to insurance laws in NJ they are barely competative.

hmm... he was quoted only 1050 for a Passat - weird.
Anyways, he's looking to basically buy a car tomorrow so any leads would be appreciated. We're searching all over cars.com and autotrader.com and have to find a winner. Budget is $3500-$4000 so something 2000ish with less than 75000 miles would be good.

NJM for the win..i been working at my job 7 years, after about 3 is when my company was able to get us into NJM, i switched over, at the time i had a mazda 3 and honda civic as a beater..my insurance went down 1100 a year, from 3200 for the 2 cars, full on the mazda, liability on the honda, clean driving record, down to a lil over 2 grand..

since trading in the mazda for the mag, it went down another 100 or so bucks a year, , pay than 150 a month, for 9 months, but hte first months (policy renewal) payment always about 500..so u only pay insurance for 9 months, last 3 no payments are made

and this year, last week to be exact i got my safe drivers dividend check, which was just under 300 bucks, i couldnt be happier..now had i had a hemi, i doubt ide see that safe driver dividend check, lol...

    Thank You Haz

If I were you I would try to get the car registered and insured in PA. That will cut your insurance payments in half (if not more) of your lowest quote in NJ. Open up a PO box in PA and use that as your address. Then after a 3 years see if your quote in jersey has come down.

    Thanks for all the replies.

He ended up getting a 2000 Focus and will be paying Progressive around 1100 every six months. Not too bad for one in his situation.
