    How to paint engine cover.

This is what I started with. The finished color will be a color matched engine cover of GO Man-Go!

I thought I would go ahead and write up the steps I took to paint my engine cover.

    1. Clean cover with clearner that will remove grease and oil. Clean it good cause just a speck of oil will not allow the paint ot stick. I used Windex.

    2. Your primer coat should be a adhession promoter because your are painting plastic. I used Dupli-Color Adhesion Promoter Clear primer. It is fast drying and very easy to use. Heres a picutre of the engine cover coated with the primer.

2.5 Another primer coat with lt. gray so that color does not come out to dark.

    3. Scuff the surface that was just primed with steelwool. I will use 000 steelwool it is very fine and will not leave any marks behind. After you wipe the intire surface with the steelwool clean it again to remove all dust.

    4. I am going to paint the engine cover with Dupli-Color Metal specks Orange. It is very close to the color of GO Man-Go! besure to make many light even coats. This is the best way to get a smooth finish with spray paint. After your coat dries buff it with the steel wool. Then clean it again. Then apply another coat of paint. And repeat the steelwool and cleaning. i will be using 3-4 coats of paint depending on how much I can get out of the can.

Picture is after 2 coats and wet sanded with steel wool. make sure to be gentle around the edges it is esy to break throught the coat of paint.

    5. Final coat of paint consentrating on edges and those hard to reach areas. Then wet sand again with wool.

    6. Clean cover good with warm soapy water. Then let it dry completly before appling clear coat. Clear cloat is applied just like your color was. One more coat of Satin Black on top part. One more wet sand on engine cover body. Then in 5-7 Days one more clearcoat with a final wetsand and wax.

    7. Test fit of almost complete project. The top has not be bolted back to the engine cover yet. In a week I will clear coat 1 more time. I will also wax it after it is completly set.

    8. I will be adding SS "HEMI" letters from Monkey. ( eagerly waiting for these.
    added hemi letters from monkey

Not bad for a rookie with a spray can.....
    9. Still working on it.
Will continue to add things as project is completed.

Thanks for the instructions. I ordered a can of plum crazy a week ago with the same plan of attack. What or who is "Monkey". Did you get your Hemi stickers on the side from him? Or did you paint them?

    Thanks Much...

Thanks for the write-up. I've been putting off doing this, but after your instructions I might just get this project going.
It looks like 2012 will be very good indeed.
Unless the Mayans are right, then, well, never mind.

it was way to dark so I had to lighten it with the primer, then spray the top coat again. But did not spray it much the first round after first very light coat, I was like OH no to dark.

Hey guys - go to your local O`Riely(sp) Auto Parts some have profesional paint mixing capabilities, at least the new on in Freindswood Texas did , and take your paint code in and have them mix up some paint for ya. But tell them ya want it in a spray can. Then you have an absolute color match. Nowdays they mix paint by computers and it will be an exact match. You can even get it in 2 part basecoat/clearcoat , where you have to spray a dull basecoat of color and then spray a clear coat for the gloss and uv protection. Of course you can get it in a single stage where you don`t need clear coat.
There was a paint store in a nearby town that did that several years ago andnow it has caught on big time.
O`Riely did me a tall can for $15.00.

Looks good. I'm curious how peoples' DIY covers look with a glossy paint. I want to color match mine too but glossy. I'll have to check a local auto parts store to see if they paint code match like Charginscott mentioned.

Is Monkey still selling these letters? Those really set off the valve cover nicely.
I don't know much and that is what I know.
