Modified Window Controls

Well I finally did it. I was driving the other day. I had my left hand on the wheel and the my right on the shift. I was having fun with the SuperChips and shifting. I went to roll down my window. I instinctually went for the center console. That is where the controls are on my wife's Mercedes Benz. Then I had to swith hands on the wheel to actuate the switch. I had to switch my hands again to drive the way I was driving. Then it hit me. Time to move door mounted window controls to the center console. I made a couple quick measurements to see if it would fit. It was a perfect fit. I took me about 8 hours total to do this mod. 4 hours one day and 4 hours the next. Below is a quick run down on how I did it.

1) Make two wire harnesses 16 feet long with 16 gauge wire(found at any auto parts store). One harness needs 7 wires and the other is 6 wires. Bunch them together and wrap with electrical tape. This is needed to keep the wires together when you thread them through the car.


2) Remove door panel. Snake both harnessed through the door and hinge area. Inside the vehicle, you have to remove the parking brake mount to get to the hole to get the harnesses. Not hard to do. Snake the wires to the center console area. (Sorry, I did not take any pictures. This is straight forward and not hard to do.)

3)Take apart the window control module. And set aside.


3) Make some connectors that will fit into the existing window control harnesses. I had to custom make some small connectors. I shaved down some standard connectors to make them fit. I soldered them on to the wires and connected them to the existing connectors.



4) Identify and match the correct wire from the harness. Solder them directly to the window module circuit board being careful to connect them in the same connector.

5) Cut and trim the center console. This was the hard part. It was trial and error. Trim, test fit, repeat. Once I was satified with the location, I glued it together with JB Weld expoy. Very strong stuff. Once everything is cured put it all together.



6) Just cover the area with a piece of black plastic. I used the rubbery material from the cubby hole insert. I just trimmed it and JB Weld to the cover. Its a great place to put a cell phone and it had the rubbery stuff so it wont slid around.




This was a quick description on how I did it. There were some steps that I did not take any pictures. I was on a roll and I forgot to stop and snap a few shots. Its not hard to do. Just need some patience and a lot of planning. You can contact me if you any questions.

Awesome look. Great job. I like the idea of the cell phone pocket in the door instead of the console. Now that you've moved the buttons, do you find yourself playing with them?

The cool thing is that I can refert back to factory whenever. All I need to do is get a new window module and center console. Pop off the black cover on the door, put in a new module and hood it back up to the the connectors. I was took chicken cutting off the original connectors. Thats why I went with the soldered on peices. Now put on a new center and VOILA! back to stock.
