How to install Homelink

Got my Homelink Installed today. Whew, glad to have that back, missed it from the Jeep. Now I just wish I could get auto headlights.
So, you want homelink, but your Magnum didn’t come with it. With the help of some other guys, I got mine going. Knowledge came to me from Mr Incredible, and iflybye. Couple of their pics too.
We’re going to be working on this:

See, no homelink buttons. We’ll be adding them to the windshield most portion of the Overhead console.
For those of you that are curious, this is what’s hanging from the mirror:

It’s a Breast Cancer Angel that used to hang from my wifes mirror. Ok, on with the install.
First, you’re going to need one of these:

Got mine from Ebay. Like this one:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/_Car-....c0.m245.l1318
Make sure you get the right color.
You don’t need the big black bracket that the console is attached to. You can just pull the console from it, you can see the 3 panel tabs in this pic. One in the front, one on each side:

Once it’s gone you have this:

We only need the big black box on the bottom right in that pic. You remove it with 4 torx screws. (Ok, you can just replace your entire overhead console if you want, but I didn’t want to.
Now that you know where the fasteners are, pull your overhead console out, and remove the blank that’s in the homelink spot on your original console.
If you’re lucky, your new console came with a cable like this one plugged into the homelink module:

If you’re not so lucky(like me), you’ll need to order part# 05183472AA from your Dodge dealer. Mine was $14 with tax.
This is what you get for your $14:

If you can solve your problem, then what is the need of worrying? If you cannot solve it, then what is the use of worrying?

Yeah, we get to assemble the wiring harness.
Half way through:

Ok, important. Label the wires. Since they’re all white, you need to know which is which. In this picture, pin 1 is on the left, and pin 6 is on the right. It didn’t show up in the pic, but it says so right on the little cover you have to snap closed:

I labeled mine in this manner, wire shown is the one inserted in pin 3.

Pretty clever huh? One hashmark pin one, 2 hashes pin two, etc…
Make sure you insert the tabs into the connector like this picture, lining up the square with the little square opening on the connector:

Ok, get all 6 wires inserted? Good. Now I used one of these: to extend the wires about 2 feet.

I soldered the wires together, then used the included heat shrinks to seal the connections. Do them one at a time, and put your wire markings toward the end of your new extensions so you know which wire you’re tapping into the harness.

They need to be long enough to run to the bottom of either the Drivers Side, or the Passenger Side A-Pillar. The connector is in different places in different cars, so, check where yours is. Mine was on the Passenger side. I also used black electrical tape to stiffen up the harness.
Ok, now we’re extended, found our connector in the A-Pillar (as shown here):

It’s time to get to work.
Unscrew the sun visor from the roof, and the visor clip. This way the headliner will move and you can route the new harness to the bottom of the appropriate A-Pillar. (No pic, you can figure it out)
Ok, you ran the wire, and figured out how to properly hide it in the A-Pillar behind the existing wiring already running there, good. Almost finished now.
Me personally, I used T-taps to tap into the existing wiring harness. That way I didn’t have to find ends to plug into the wiring harness plug, or cut any wires. When I crimped the ends on the new wiring harness for the T-Taps I used my sharpie:

to write the pin # on the blue spade end. (Same sharpee I used to lable the wires, sharpies rule)
Ok, these are the wires you need to tap (Refer to 2 pictures ago). You have to tap in on the car side of that connector, not all necessary wires are on the interior connector. If they were, we wouldn’t be doing this, right?

Passenger Apillar Harness ----Homelink Cable
White/Orange -----White/Orange CAN B BUS (+) PIN6 - Homelink Cable
White ------------White CAN B BUS (-) PIN5 - Homelink Cable
Red/green --------Red/green FUSED B(+) (I.O.D.) PIN4 - Homelink Cable
Black/green -------Black/green GROUND PIN3 - Homelink Cable
Pink/green --------Pink ACC Power delayed PIN2 - Homelink Cable

If you were lucky, and got the harness with your console, you just match up colors. If you have the white wire harness like I do, then above is your pinout guide. Again, it’s important that you understand which is pin1 and which is pin6.
Ok, now we’re all hooked up in the A-pillar. Now install the overhead console in the car. And it’s time to program the homelink.

In my 07 Magnum to program the homelink, you position your garage door opener about 3” from the homelink button, depress the opener button, and the homelink button you wish to program at the same time, holding them down until it’s programmed. In mine, it took 25 seconds to program. I held the buttons for 30 seconds just to be sure. If you don’t have a roaming code opener, you’re done. If you do, you have to press the learn button on the opener, then the homelink button you just programmed so they synch up. (official instructions are in your owners manual, I just wanted to say that 25 seconds was how long it took)

Ok, did it work? Good, now put your A-Pillar cover back on. That’s all guys.

If you can solve your problem, then what is the need of worrying? If you cannot solve it, then what is the use of worrying?

Excellent write up. Stumbled across this and even though I'm not doing a install it was still a great read.

I have a question, will the homelink still work if you didn't connect the can bus leads?
My point is could this be retrofitted into a different vehicle w/out can bus?
She will always be missed

It would not receive any power, so no it would not work if not connected. Could you retrofit? I'm sure it would be a lot easier to do the same thing with the model that was probably available in them, but that's a guess.

If you can solve your problem, then what is the need of worrying? If you cannot solve it, then what is the use of worrying?
