Does the 5.7L have the ability to disable ESP like the SRT? *

How many times have you heard "I heard about this guy who has an R/T and if he waits for the startup chimes to end, then immediately holds down the ESP button for ten seconds.... he totally disable ESP like on the SRT!!!"

While I was spending my 5 hours with an SRT Engineer today reprogramming my car I asked him specifically about this myth.

The switch has nothing to do with the difference between ESP in the R/T's and SRTs. The difference is how long the message is being sent to the unit that controls all of it.

The R/T is simply INCAPABLE of doing this.

The SRT system has to be programmed especially to accept this particular signal, and this is only done by SRT... not by Dodge, so there can be no LX leaving the factory accidentally with this "3rd position ESP" as in the SRT versions.

I asked him why some people report being able to get the system to "chime" after holding it long enough. His reply was that there is a safety system set up where if something was inadvertantly holding down the ESP button (say you were carrying a large box in the front seat and it was unintentionally leaning on the button holding it in) that the chime alrts you to this, and continued pressure will result in the ESP defaulting and re-engaging fully.

    Cool

The programming is not done by SRT, it is actually a different Continental Teves module, a Mark 25E instead of the Mark 25. You hold the button down for five seconds and it shuts it off. There is a 5.7L application with the Mark 25E module-cop cars!!!

So are you saying that with the module mentioned above in hand, I can have the SRT style ESP disable feature on an RT? And if so, does it require a key cycle to reset the ESP like the various ESP disable mods currently available?

No. Cop cars are essentially stripped models with an exclusive wiring harness and brake components. The Mark 25E is wired differentely and works differentely than the Mark 25. It doesn't have the pedal travel sensor, a brake pressure sensor, or an active booster. DCX specifically said in the 8/2005 technical reference book "LX model update" that vehicles with Mark 25 cannot be retrofitted to use Mark 25E. Reseting just requires one press of the ESP off switch.

Enabling Dyno mode through a starscan completely disables ESP, Torque Management, BAS, ABS, etc. :P

Thanks for the post. Me and my friend have been wondering about this mysterious ESP since his throttle was severely hindered during a 0 to 60 run we sampled. We had the ESP off, so we were like WTF. It really sucks that you can't fully disable ESP.

You can if you pull the fuse or get a noesp mod.

I was told about the "chime" as well for my 2006 300C. So i tried to just hold down the ESP button for a length of time. After about 15 seconds the "burnout" light just turns off. No Chime.

So then I did it just after start up. Held it for 10 seconds and then there was the chime and the "burnout" light was still on. Totally different then when I pushed it before.

Now when I am at the track and I "chime" the ESP, it is much harder to launch the car without spinning the tires. When I just push the ESP button once when the car is running, the traction control kicks in BIG TIME at the launch as slowsme down along with no wheels spin.

So I am going to have to say that is does something to "chime" it, maybe it doesnt turn it all the way off, but most of the way off.

I did mine the easy way (only works for the 05' and some early 06's) I put a switch on fuse #17, to turn off ESP completely. Mounted the switch on the dash, so I can turn it on/off at will.

Over on chargerforums.com there's been a lot of talk about a member's discovery of holding the ignition key to the right for 4-5 seconds while moving more than 10 mph ... it doesn't crank the starter because the engine is already running, it shuts off the ESP/BAS and lights up the squiggly lines light and the ESP/BAS light, effectively disbling ESP completely until the engine is shut off and re-started ... it seems to only work on cars built 4/06 and newer ... Charger owner's everywhere are lighting up their tires in a newfound fury ...

This works on mine, just have to be going over 5mph and hold it for 3-5 seconds!

I gave it a try on my way home, and it worked. The two lamps came on, but I couldn't try it out to see if it actually did anything due to rush hour traffic....grr!

Well, with an AWD there's not gonna be much you can do .... although, in the rain I was able to get all 4 tires scrambling for traction off the line ...

I knew there'd be a down side to the AWD thing. I do miss the tires spinning around trying to get traction in the rain though. My first car would go nuts, especially if the front wheels were on the stop bar
